Hoovervilles were makeshift shantytowns that formed across the United States during the Great Depression as people who lost their homes and jobs struggled to find shelter. They often consisted of ramshackle wood or canvas structures that provided little protection from the cold. Residents frequently lacked adequate food, water, and medical care, so illness and death were common. Some Hoovervilles were organized with their own leaders, while others were torn down by authorities.

2. Hoovervilles Some of the places that the people lived in were old wood shacks in really bad condition. Some were just canvas tents.

3. People had little recourses so they got really cold. They had very little food and drink so most of the time they were sick and most times died.

4. Even small children had to help raise money to help support their family.

5. Some hoovervilles got torched by some authorities. But most of the hoovervilles looked like this one. Poor and all clumped together.

7. Some families were fortunate enough to stay with friends and family that hadn’t been evicted yet.

8. Some of the larger shantytowns populations were organized; having their own mayor and sanitary committee and other committees.

9. In 1941, a shack elimination program was put into effect, and shantytowns were torn down. The employment levels had begun to rise, which gradually provided some shelter and security for formerly homeless Americans.
