This document provides a timeline and preparation steps for students to create and deliver a speech on human rights for school. It outlines 4 weeks of activities including choosing a topic, researching the issue, creating an outline and draft, revising the draft, practicing delivery, and presenting the final speech to the class. The timeline details the key tasks and deadlines to have the speech prepared and polished in time for the scheduled presentations.

Speech Preparation TIMELINE
This time line is to go in your Home Study Book.
Make a list
Choose a subject that relates to The Human Rights Convention. (The rights of
the child). Remember that other people in your family may help you with
preparing your speech
Digging up the facts
Collect the information you need from your own experience, internet, books,
people etc.
Sorting and sifting
Plan the order of the information you want to include.
Do a concept map – include headings your main topic can cover and questions
to guide your research
Week 1
Friday
25th
July
Writing it
Your first words have to ‘grab your listeners’ attention AND
Tell what your talk is about.
You can do this by asking questions, sharing a surprising or startling fact or by
telling an intriguing anecdote.
Remember that your work must be available for school and home
The middle:
Keep the audience interested by staying on track, stick with your planning and
main ideas. Add humour, interesting facts etc
Think about how you will end your speech – bring together the different ideas.
Add some sizzle by recalling main events, sum up, encourage action, or finish
with a question.
Start your first draft – use the computer if you can. That way you can make
changes easily. Save your file! You can use the school computers and/or
email me for checks at suef@nelsoncentral.school.nz.
Remember that your work must be available for school and home
Once your first draft is finished, leave it for a day and then come back to it to
see if you want to make any changes.
Week 2
Friday 1st
August
FINISH YOUR DRAFT BY Friday – but you can work on it over the
weekend
Start this section by the beginning of week 3. 4th
August. Earlier will be
even better.
Read your speech out loud and see if it runs together nicely. Time it – is it at
least 3 minutes long?
Read your speech to someone else and ask if they would suggest changes.
Once you have decided on the final copy, prepare small cue cards. If you
have used the computer, organise the sections and put your speech into two
columns, using a font size 14-16 which will make it easier to make the cards
Week 3
Friday
8th
August
Practice reading your speech several times – think about your speed,
expression, pace, pause, add drama, emotion to your words and remember to
make eye contact with your audience
Remember that your work must be available for school and home
FINISH YOUR FINAL COPY BY Wednesday 13th
August. Week 4 Wednesday
13th
August
Adding show to your tell
Have another objective look at your speech, consider adding show by
describing rather than telling the audience
The class round of speeches will be Monday 18th
August. Be ready – be
prepared. Sportopia people – you will be first up.
