 Sunlight on our garden area hits directly on the
east side of our house which is directly to our
garden area. This is always a great area to work
in the early mornings(see slide 3).
 Wind has always been a problems especially in
the early spring as we get the chinook winds. A
windbreak would do well in helping prevent
damage to our crops.
 Wildlife has not been a serious problem in our
field by the house, however we are in the
process of putting up some fencing.
 Noise and Pollution is not a big factor as we
are located away from the main highway
Get aYield or Harvest
“Our efforts to work with nature must bear fruit that can provide for
our needs” . Although we run a little farm one of the areas that we are
always striving to get better at is to use all the resources that are
available. When looking at yield across the farm there are so many areas
that we can get better at.This year for the first time we are doing green
manures to enrich our soil, and a second part of this is the no till process.
In doing these processes we are enriching and stabilizing the soil so that
it will produce a better yield. The other areas that we are working on is
composting our waste from the house as much as possible, to include
food debri, and ashes from the stove. We will get better at building our
soil up with the straw and chicken droppings from the chicken coop.(see
slide 6). Ultimately all of these practices can help this little farm enrich
the current soil and increase our yield.
Make NoWaste
I have heard it said many times during my life waste
not want not. If one does not waste they will not be
needy. This may go right into getting a yield. This year
we raised 6 cows and everything that we considered
waste was given to the cows(see slide 8).This helped
us in cleaning up a few fields this past year as cows
love pumpkins and we knew this was assisting in
putting weight on the cows. I believe as we move
forward we will continue to look at a lot of things we
consider waste and how can we use it to benefit our
homestead/farm.
