The document discusses Holiday Extras' reasons for moving to the cloud:
1) Cost savings - Moving to AWS cloud infrastructure reduced hosting costs from £500,000 to £120,000 annually.
2) Agility - The cloud allows for faster development and time to market for new features compared to traditional hosting.
3) Insight - Cloud services enable Holiday Extras to capture and analyze customer data to innovate and improve products.
The key principles for their cloud journey were to take a strategic approach by evaluating options like AWS vs Rackspace, and maintaining an openness to change as cloud technologies advanced.
Monolithic code bases are not only difficult to maintain, they slow your development teams. As your application grows, the tight coupling of code and teams can bring progress to a halt. In this session, Datadog shares tips for uncoupling your teams and breaking large code bases into microservices. This presentation is brought to you by AWS partner, Datadog.

Structuring Data from Unstructured Things. Sean Lorenz
Data coming from Internet of Things (IoT) product sensors can be hard to manage or know what to do with. In this talk Sean will discuss ways to tame IoT data sources by organizing and pruning that information effectively. He will also discuss the importance of time series when culminating sensor, metadata and other data sources together, making it vastly easier to query or perform analytics on your newly structured data.
Static Sites Can be the Solution (Simon Wood)Future Insights
Taken from this month's (17th July) London Web meet-up (http://londonweb.org) - we were joined by Simon Wood. Based in Kent, Simon is a passionate tech/geek and is currently Head of Technology and Innovation at the Shortbreaks and New Ventures division of Holiday Extras, a travel technology company. Simon is also acting CTO for miDrive an in-house Start Up incubator.
Simon's session description for Static Sites Can be the Solution:
"We build complex dynamic websites as a first port of call but these are slow, have issues with scaling and can be complex to host. I believe we should more often look to static sites first. I will demonstrate why static sites are such a good choice and show you how you can build static sites, using tools like Jekyll and other static site generators. We will cover how they can be hosted on S3 and GitHub pages and talk about how they can be frequently updated with the correct workflow even though they are static. You can have a blog on a static site and still make regular new blog posts and have dynamic content."

Rome, Romance. How could the two not go together? Daunting traffic may make you think twice about zipping around the city on a Vespa like Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in Roman Holiday. But nothing can detract you from the sheer emotion of sharing a multi-hued sunset behind the dome of St. Peter’s, a walk in the footsteps of romantic poets or an ice cream at a pavement café table as the theatrical scene that is Rome rushes by.

Building a reliable and scalable IoT platform with MongoDB and HiveMQDominik Obermaier
Today’s Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling companies to blend together the physical and digital worlds, creating new business models and generating insights that increase productivity at once unimaginable levels. However, managing the ever growing volume of heterogeneous IoT data from disparate devices, systems and applications both on premise and in the cloud can be a challenging endeavour without a scalable and reliable IoT platform.
In this webinar, we will explore why and how companies are leveraging HiveMQ and MongoDB to build exactly that: a scalable and reliable IoT platform. Based upon a sample fleet management scenario, we will explain how telematics data can be routed via MQTT and efficiently stored to provide analytics and insights into the data.
Key Learnings
- Common challenges and pitfalls of IoT projects
- Required components for effectively handling data with an IoT platform
- HiveMQ for MQTT to enable bi-directional device communication over unstable networks
- MongoDB as the flexible and scalable modern data platform combining data from different sources and powering your applications
- Why MongoDB and HiveMQ is such a great combination

Do you need to build scalable 5G and IoT applications? Or, maybe distribute the computing required by AR/VR throughout the data path? Perhaps you need to implement Digital Twins? Well you've come to the right place.
Edge Computing is a paradigm that distributes computing and data storage between the Cloud and the users. In fact, the data center infrastructure that sits between you and the Cloud is actually larger than all the Cloud data centers combined. For over two decades, thanks to that Edge infrastructure you've been able to watch videos and smoothly surf the web. Today the "Edge" is powering all the automation around you; for example, smart cities, smart cars, smart factories, etc.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
