2. Introduction
During the fall semester of my senior year, I completed a clinical
internship working for the Clemson University CVT Leadership
Program at the Patewood Medical Campus of GHS.

3. Clemson University CVT Leadership
Program
Similar to Clemson’s nursing program, the CVT Leadership
Program requires that students take two years of classes
followed by two years of clinical experience.
Students graduating from this program earn their bachelor’s
degree, and most go on to be licensed cardiovascular
technologists.
The main office for the program is located in the Bioimaging Lab
on the Patewood Medical Campus of GHS.
I worked for Eric Walker, the program director, and his associates
over the course of the semester.
5. GHS Vision, Mission, Values
Vision: Transform healthcare for the benefit of the
people and communities we serve
Mission: Heal compassionately. Teach innovatively.
Improve constantly.
Values: Toether we serve with integrity, respect, trust
and openness.
6. Internship Duties
The CVT Leadership program uses a system of “Standardized
Patients” to test the senior level students. The SPs are volunteers
that agree to come in and have the students scan them the way
they would in a professional environment, and the students are
graded based on their performance.
I was in charge of creating a system for scheduling SP
appointments, communicating with the SPs, and making sure the
process went as smoothly as possible.
I was also given various other tasks throughout the semester,
including organizing catering for academic meetings, and
researching other similar programs offered in the tri-state area.
11. Internship Projects
Competency schedules:
I contacted the standardized patients and recorded
their appointment information in Excel spreadsheets to
keep the information organized and easily accesible.
Competency follow-up emails:
I created templates for emails that would be sent to
patients after their appointment time was confirmed.
The emails contained basic information, including the
appointment time, our location, and the type of scan
they would be receiving.

End of semester scan lab assessment rubric
I created an Excel spreadsheet to help expedite the
grading process of the final lab exam for one of the
instuctors.
Research on other CVT and DMS programs
I found information about other programs similar to
Clemson’s within the tri-state area. This was used in
drafting the program’s business plan.

Library check-out list
I compiled a list of all the textbooks available for
students and instructors in the bioimaging lab. I
updated it periodically if a student checked out one of
the textbooks to study.
14. Internship Outcomes
Through my internship experience, I was able to:
Take responsibility for the scheduling and organization
of standardized patients
Gain insight into the responsibilities that come with
being a program director
Meet other hospital administrators throughout the GHS
Patewood Campus
Gain experience with organization, funding, and
planning of medical conferences
15. Conclusion
Overall, I really enjoyed my internship. I gained
valuable, first-hand insight into what a day is like in the
life of a health care administrator, and it affirmed that I
will be happy in this kind of position. I gained some
communication and organizational skills through
management of the standardized patients, and now
feel equipped to handle projects given to me once I
graduate. I am very grateful to all the students and
faculty of the CVT Leadership program for allowing
me to learn from them.
