After February 1943, the shadow of Stalingrad ever lengthened ahead of Adolf Hitler. The battle for that city had ended in disastrous defeat, shattering the myth of his military "Midas touch," ending his chances of defeating the Red Army, permanently damaging relations with Italy, Rumania, Hungary, and other allied nations, and, of course, inflicting heavy losses on his eastern armies. More than 150,000 Axis soldiers, most of them German, had been killed or wounded in the city's approaches or ruins; 108,000 others stumbled into Soviet captivity, 91,000 in the battle's last three days alone. (Although Hitler never learned of their fate, only six thousand ever returned to Germany.) The battle has attracted considerable scholarly and journalistic attention. Literally scores of books and articles on Stalingrad have appeared during the 50 years since Stalin's armies bulldozed into Berlin, bringing the war in Europe to a close. Most have been published in Germany and, to a lesser degree, Russia, where the name "Stalingrad" still conjures up powerful and emotional imagery. Comparatively few have been published in the English-speaking world, and this is understandable. Because no British, Common wealth, or American forces took part in the battle, they can number none of their own among its many heroes, martyrs, prisoners, and victims. Moreover, although the German defeat at Stalin grad was immediately seen in the West as a turning point, its effects were not directly felt by the Anglo- - American nations. The main focus of Stalin grad historiography, including the dozen books published in 1992 and 1993 to commemorate the battle's 50th anniversary, has been the fighting, encirclement, suffering, and destruction of Generalfeldmarschall Friedrich Paulus's Sixth Army. Few books and articles have devoted adequate attention to the activities of the Luftwaffe, although it made substantial contributions to all battles throughout the 1942 summer campaign—of which Stalin grad was the climax—and it alone was responsible for the maintenance of Sixth Army after Marshal G. K. Zhukov's forces severed it from all but radio contact with other German army formations. Even fewer works—and none in English—have analyzed in depth Hitler's decision to supply the forces trapped at Stalin grad from the air, even though this decision led to the destruction of those forces after the Luftwaffe failed to keep them adequately supplied.
Chemical Weapons in WWI
Chemical weapons were used extensively in World War 1 to injure and kill entrenched soldiers. Early in the war, tear gas was used by both sides but proved limited in its lethality. By 1915, more lethal gases like phosgene were being produced and used in large quantities by Germany, France, and Britain. The Greatest Fighter Pilot of World War 2
Eric Hartmann was the greatest fighter ace of all time, scoring 352 aerial victories during World War 2 while flying for the German Luftwaffe. As a young pilot posted to the Eastern Front in 1942, Hartmann began racking up victories at an incredible pace, shooting down 4 Soviet aircraft before breakfast on July 7, 1943 during the Battle of Kursk. By the end of the war in 1945, Hartmann had been highly decorated for his service but was eventually captured by Soviet forces and spent 10 years in Siberian labor camps before being released.
Night of the Long Knives
In June 1934, Hitler ordered the massacre known as the Night of the Long Knives in which hundreds of Nazis were killed to consolidate his power. Some members of the Nazi Party and the paramilitary Sturmabteilung (SA) led by Ernst Rohm opposed Hitler's consolidation of power and wanted a socialist revolution. Hitler had the SA leadership, including Rohm, arrested and killed to remove this threat. This allowed Hitler to eliminate internal opposition and solidify his control over the Nazi Party and Germany.

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. He believed that those who want to survive should fight and those who don't fight don't deserve to live. Hitler served in World War 1 and was imprisoned in 1924 for treason. He wrote Mein Kampf while in prison. In 1933, he became Chancellor of Germany and violated the Treaty of Versailles in 1935. During his rule, the Holocaust took place from 1939-1945 where 6 million Jews were killed. Hitler committed suicide in 1945 in his bunker at age 56 as the Soviet Union invaded Germany.
The Eastern Front
The Eastern Front of World War 2 consisted of 9 countries from Germany to Russia. It began with Germany invading Poland in 1939. In 1941, Germany betrayed the Soviet Union by invading in Operation Barbarossa with the goal of gaining territory. This led to major battles at Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk as the Soviets resisted the German invasion. Key turning points were the German failure to take Moscow in 1941-1942 and the destruction of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad in early 1943. Though immensely costly, the Soviet Union pushed the Germans back through major victories, taking the war to Berlin by 1945 and contributing greatly to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

When Hindenburg died, Hitler combined the roles of Chancellor and President to become the Führer of Germany with the military and people swearing loyalty to him.

World War 2 lasted from 1939 to 1945. Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany and invaded Poland in 1939, marking the start of World War 2. Britain and France then declared war on Germany. Germany went on to invade and occupy France and launched air raids on Britain. Germany also invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 but failed to defeat them. Major battles included Stalingrad, Kursk, and Moscow, which resulted in victories for the Soviets. Allied forces launched D-Day on June 6, 1944 to liberate Western Europe from Germany. The war ended in 1945 with Victory in Europe Day and Victory over Japan Day.

After February 1943, the shadow of Stalingrad ever lengthened ahead of Adolf Hitler. The battle for that city had ended in disastrous defeat, shattering the myth of his military "Midas touch," ending his chances of defeating the Red Army, permanently damaging relations with Italy, Rumania, Hungary, and other allied nations, and, of course, inflicting heavy losses on his eastern armies. More than 150,000 Axis soldiers, most of them German, had been killed or wounded in the city's approaches or ruins; 108,000 others stumbled into Soviet captivity, 91,000 in the battle's last three days alone. (Although Hitler never learned of their fate, only six thousand ever returned to Germany.) The battle has attracted considerable scholarly and journalistic attention. Literally scores of books and articles on Stalingrad have appeared during the 50 years since Stalin's armies bulldozed into Berlin, bringing the war in Europe to a close. Most have been published in Germany and, to a lesser degree, Russia, where the name "Stalingrad" still conjures up powerful and emotional imagery. Comparatively few have been published in the English-speaking world, and this is understandable. Because no British, Common wealth, or American forces took part in the battle, they can number none of their own among its many heroes, martyrs, prisoners, and victims. Moreover, although the German defeat at Stalin grad was immediately seen in the West as a turning point, its effects were not directly felt by the Anglo- - American nations. The main focus of Stalin grad historiography, including the dozen books published in 1992 and 1993 to commemorate the battle's 50th anniversary, has been the fighting, encirclement, suffering, and destruction of Generalfeldmarschall Friedrich Paulus's Sixth Army. Few books and articles have devoted adequate attention to the activities of the Luftwaffe, although it made substantial contributions to all battles throughout the 1942 summer campaign—of which Stalin grad was the climax—and it alone was responsible for the maintenance of Sixth Army after Marshal G. K. Zhukov's forces severed it from all but radio contact with other German army formations. Even fewer works—and none in English—have analyzed in depth Hitler's decision to supply the forces trapped at Stalin grad from the air, even though this decision led to the destruction of those forces after the Luftwaffe failed to keep them adequately supplied.
Chemical Weapons in WWI
Chemical weapons were used extensively in World War 1 to injure and kill entrenched soldiers. Early in the war, tear gas was used by both sides but proved limited in its lethality. By 1915, more lethal gases like phosgene were being produced and used in large quantities by Germany, France, and Britain. The most widely used and effective gas was mustard gas, introduced by Germany in 1917. Mustard gas caused large, painful blisters upon contact with skin and could linger in low-lying areas for days after being deployed.
