This presentation was used in September 2012 as a mock Exam-AID to teach members about the history of the UVic SOS chapter. There is also information about how to get involved with this organization.
10. The story of SOS at UVic really began in 2009…
Lincoln, a 4th year student in business, made
the first attempt to get SOS off the ground.
The chapter was called Victoria SOS.
12. Building a small group of volunteers from his friends in
business, Lincoln led the first Exam-AID review session
at UVic for Commerce 445.
With 20 students attending, the session raised $400.
Records show that a session was planned for Organic
Chemistry 231, but it never happened.

first session ever
run by Victoria SOS.
15. Lincoln graduated This situation did

18. Without another person appointed
to take over the chapter, SOS at
UVic was officially dead.
19. In reflecting on the early days of Victoria SOS, Greg
Overholt (Executive Director of SOS) writes:
“Ever since we launched in 2008, we have had
students at UVic come and go, but none have
actually been able to get the chapter off the ground.”
20. Was every attempt
to start SOS at
UVic doomed to
fail from the start?

Mom, I found my international volunteer organization!!!!!!!!!!!!
It looks good, I want to apply for one of the executive roles in the
UVic chapter since this is brand new here, it would be the best
chance to get one of the top positions and then do a trip with them
next year!

24. “Hi Greg, In response to an email I received through Golden Key,
I'm very interested in getting involved in helping start up an
SOS chapter at the University of Victoria”
Greg’s Reply:
“Where SOS at UVic stands is that there isn't a president and
without a president to run things, there isn't a club.”
Then Greg popped the question…
“Are you interested in applying to be president?”
25. Our story begins again with the fact that:
The University of Victoria chapter of Students Offering
Support was founded May 4, 2011 by Ryan Heron.

27. The decision to change Victoria SOS to UVic SOS…
Was not made by Ryan.
Or Greg.
Or a person…
It was the result of a spam-bot.
28. Every 3 minutes of every day,
Victoria SOS got a new application!
However, everyone interested in joining Victoria SOS
was also hoping to sell prescription drugs…
29. Wed, May 18, 2011
Instead of purchasing prescription drugs,
the domain name www.uvicsos.com was bought.
31. Soon after, Sean Kennedy would
join as a Co-President.
Ryan & Sean entered September
of Year 1 with 31 members
recruited from their networks.
UVic SOS had begun…
32.
33. Our goal for last year was to teach
150 students and raise $3000…

Long-term goal:
Make UVic SOS a well-known name
across campus that is synonymous with
quality review sessions!
43. General Volunteers advertise SOS Exam-AID review sessions with:
Posters and brochures and… some very creative marketing!
50. All the money we generate from Exam-AID
sessions funds the supplies & building
materials for outreach projects.
But we don’t just give the money away…
These projects are constructed by SOS
volunteers themselves!
51. This summer, UVic SOS members
went to Guatemala to construct an
eco-friendly schoolhouse!
52. Using the supplies
purchased with the
funds from our
review
sessions, we
constructed
benches, soccer
goals, a temporary
tire swing, and a
school.
