4. HISTORY OF AVID
• In 1980, Mary Catherine Swanson created the
program in hopes of aiding students that did
not previously have the means to be
successful in school. The first class had 32
students and the students were located in
San Diego, California.
• The main focus of the program is to help
students be successful in their school work
and personal lives. AVID promoted college
readiness through skill development and
support in the student’s studies.
• The program is offered nationally and
globally. There are currently 47 states and 16
countries that offer the AVID elective class.
5. AVID AT BSD
• The program has been offered at the
Beaverton School District for about 5
years. The course is currently being
offered at all of the secondary schools for
students in grades 6 to 12.

9. WEEK 1 & 2
• The last couple of weeks I
started tutoring at Highland
Park Middle School.
• Specifically, I’m in an
afternoon 6th grade AVID
class.
• First week we focused on the
tutorial process and I
facilitated a small group
discussion.
• Second week was based
around organization and
teamwork. We organized
planners and binders and
participated in a group
building activity.
10. CURRENT WORK
• Throughout the term, I will be recruiting volunteers and guest speakers
from various places in the community.
• We are currently curating a list of contacts that teachers, schools, and
the district can contact.
• This week, I will be searching for businesses and organizations that
would be interested. I will also be getting in contact with stakeholders
who have previously shown interest in working with the Beaverton
School District.
• This task will require me to work closely with the marketing and
communications coordinator and AVID specialist

12. CURRENT WORK
• I will also be scoping the Portland State campus
for locations to advertise volunteer and paid AVID
tutorial flyers
• SALP bulletins
• Career center
• Campus resource centers
• Handshake
• First, my focus will be on PSU. But in the coming
weeks I will also be looking into contacting schools
such as PCC, Pacific, and possibly OSU and U of O.
Fairs and events will also be places I will be
recruiting.
• Our main type of advertisement will be paper
flyers
13. IN THE COMING WEEKS
I hope to work with…
• The graphic designer at the district to design advertisements
• The marketing and communications coordinator on developing a
social media ad campaign
