History of the Cinema’s
technological
developments
http://www.tech-notes.tv/Dig-Cine/Digitalcinema.html
1895- the 1940’s
• At this period in time for cinema technology saw the
development and creation of the first portable camera which
is able to take exterior images of far away places

• In 1912 saw the introduction of motorized cameras which
  replaced the hand crank camera

• Later in 1913 saw the introduction of much bigger movie
palaces to try and attract a bigger audience.
1895- the 1940’s
• In 1920 the first commerical radio begins to start
  broadcasting.

• In 1927 saw Farnsworth capture the first electronic image.

• 1929 saw the first motion picture which was shown in colour

• 1935 saw the first full film produced in colour and the film was
  known as ‘Becky Sharp’

• Due to the second world war TV sales are put to a halt and
producers go back to making black and white films.
1950’s and 60’s
• The large-screen cinema is developed in 1952 which uses multiply
projectors to create a visual spectacle.

• 20th Century Fox develops the cinemascope in which the use of an
anamorphic lens gives an illusion of a wider screen projection just by
the simple change-out of one part.

• In 1954 Television is later broadcast in colour

• 1960 shows the introduction of smell-O-vision, but (not surprisingly)
  sank like a ship.

• In 1969 the first film is fully in 3D which uses the single strip process
of capturing images from the left and right
1970’s and 80’s
• In 1975 the release the first betamax VCR for home viewing
and video recording, but not long after JVC is quickly following
  with the VHS

• The Dolby stero was released to the public in 1976 which is
mean for the use of watching/listening to movies.

• Computers for the individual needs are developed in speed
and power and they begin to help people in the film business.
1990’s
• The special effects used in Terminator 2 become visual stunning and
proves the computer is the ideal tool for creating special effects

• High Definition came into the world, but wasn’t properly introduced
to the public until the late 2000’s

• DirecTV is launched in 1994 which is using satellites to project the
  signals the viewers TV.

• 1995 see the release of Toy Story which becomes the first
completely computer-generated film and in the same year CD-
ROM’s are available which store a full feature length film.

• 1998 sees the first release of a DVD becoming popular.
2000’s
• The Blair witch project becomes a new hit and it enables
studios to create a new form of entertainment.

• Digital 3D projection largely became popular in the late 2000’s
and since replaced the earlier 3D film systems which had a lot
  of problems.
Notes:
• Smell-O-Vision was a system used to project different smells
due to what was happening in a movie you’re watching that
  was created by Hans Laube.

• The only movie is system was used in was the 1960 film Scent
of mystery which projected 30 different smells.

• In 1965 the system was demonstrated how it worked on the
BBC and once a onion was chopped and coffee was brewed
viewers called the BBC to confirm they could smell the aromas
  being made on the TV.
