Digital technology has significantly impacted the film industry over the past decade. As digital cameras and broadband internet became more accessible to the public, people were able to create and distribute their own films, extending existing brands and promoting major studio films. However, this also led to increased piracy. Major studios have responded by decreasing film production as digital technologies have enabled independent films to be shot without large budgets. Going forward, the film industry will continue adapting to new technologies and changing audience habits.

Over the past decade, the use of digital technology has
become increasingly visible, moving into the hands of
audiences, and changing the way we absorb media.
The Film Industry is likely to continue readjusting in
the future, from the introduction of new technologies
and their connection to the audience.

3. New Technologies
Technology has changed everything in some way, there were many different aspects of
film that technology changed e.g. certain aspects of production, camera equipment etc.
The use of DV cameras amid audiences has notably affected the film industry, in that
audiences themselves can feel closer to the industry.
The use of DV cameras has benefitted the film industry, in that the audience can create
their own productions, and extend the brand of the film, where users can upload their
own ‘films’ to the internet, on websites such as YouTube, due to the increased number of
broadband connections in homes, promoting the films in doing so. As it became more
available to the public, there was an increasing quality of the product.
However having DV cameras become available to the public, caused an increase in the
levels of piracy used in film since 2009.
As the public are being given chances to develop a digital film themselves, big film
studios are decreasing the amount of films they make due to the digital technology that
has overcome original classic films.
For example the film ‘Olive’ was purely shot on a Nokia smartphone, and this will
continue to happen as new digital technologies increase in number eventually taking
over the whole point of films being shot on original film cameras.
