The travel and tourism industry grew out of increased leisure time for the middle class in Britain following the industrial revolution. The development of rail networks facilitated tourism, but cuts to rail under Dr. Beeching in the 1960s closed over half the lines and stations. While initially portrayed as a mistake, this shifted focus to roads and air travel. Increased leisure time from holidays, technology, affluence, and pre-requisites like improved transport and communication have underpinned growth in the UK travel and tourism industry since World War 2.
