What are
Historical Facts?
by: Ever Luv Esquilla
 History has to do with the thought and
action of men and women who lived in the past.
 Historian works in the past; he explores the
past in order to find out what men and women
did and though of the past.
 His business is to discover and set forth the
facts of history.

What is the
Historical Fact?
In December
1897, Aguinaldo
and 25 other
revolutionary
leaders went on
voluntary exile
in Hong Kong.
 Because this simple statement, only a
symbol, is a generalization of many
simple facts and this generalization itself
cannot be use apart from the wider facts
and generalizations which it symbolizes.
What he can deal with directly is a
statement about the event, a statement
which affirms that the fact that the event
occurred
•.
What is the
Historical Fact?
The historical fact is
not the past event, but a
symbol, a simple statement
which enables us to recreate
it imaginatively.

Where is the
Historical Fact?
The historical fact is
in his mind, or in
somebody’s mind or they
are nowhere.
Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at
the Manila International Airport on 21st
August 1983.
 Ninoy is not being assassinated now
MIA. The actual event is gone forever.
Yet this is precisely the sort of thing the
historian is concerned with. These
vanished realities give place to pale
reflection, impalpable images or ideas
and this thing that cannot be touched or
handled are all that is left of the actual
occurrence - the facts.
. In a sense, they are also in the
records, in the sources. But if no one in
this world who could make any meaning
out of it, this would cease to be a
historical fact. Historical fact makes a
difference only because it is in human
minds.

When is the
Historical Fact?
If the historical fact
is present imaginatively
in someone’s mind, then it
is now a part of the
present.
Think of the Katipunan
meeting on the 23rd of August
1896 at Pugadlawin.
The image is partly of things done in
the past and partly of things to be done
in the future; but it is more or less all
in one image now present in the mind.

Historical
Facts The truth is, the actual past is gone; and
the world of history is an intangible
world, created imaginatively, and present in
our minds.

ns
1. There is no possibility that
the historian can present in its
entirety any actual
event, even the simplest.
2. The historian cannot
eliminate the personal
equation.
3. No one can profit by
historical research, or not
much, unless he does some for
himself.
4. Every normal person
does know some history.
5. The kind of history that has
most influence upon the life of the
community and the course of
events is the history common men
carry around in their heads.
