ADOLPH D’SOUZA (47), AGGRESSIVE VEGETARIANS REHABILITATED SLUMDWELLER CITIZEN ACTIVIST the party has shifted to wide open spaces. Shah is one of a new breed of Mumbaikars whose yearly routine now revolves around the third Sunday of January, when the Mumbai Marathon is held. Shah, who jumped on to the bandwagon last June, does outdoor training from six in the morn- ing every weekend, apart from the regular routine on weekdays. The businessman is joined by a group of 25 to 30 runners, who plan their runs and egg each other on to achieve something they thought was impossible a few years ago. Says Rajiv Sethi, a 46-year-old entrepreneur who joined the group after watching his friend Atul Maheshwari (44) successfully complete the marathon, “I have not just lost weight but brought about a total change in my social and personal life.” Sethi and his wife Sarika have, in turn, inspired their children to follow a fitness regime. And employ- ees of Sethi’s Gemini Group are planning to par- ticipate in the 2010 marathon. Since the first edition of the marathon in 2004, the response of Mumbaikars has been so over- whelming that the organisers were forced to intro- duce a cap of 10,000 runners for the two compet- itive races. So what draws so many to the race? Rujuta Diwekar, who trains at least 150 people from October onwards, and 25 to 30 through the year for the marathon, attributes the enthusiasm to the high that completing a task like a marathon offers. “It has even changed the way regulars party and socialise. Instead of late-night parties, they now gather for breakfast meetings and even organise treks and cycle tours for vacations,” she says.
