HCL was founded in 1976 in India by Shiv Nadar as one of the first Indian IT services companies, starting as a hardware company. It developed India's first indigenous microcomputer and made early contributions to databases, client-server architecture, and UNIX systems. In 1991, HCL's R&D division spun off as HCL Technologies to enter software services. Today HCL has a presence in 35 countries and its vision is "to together create the enterprises of tomorrow."
