• known as father of India’s IT hardware industry.
• He is the only Indian to establish computer systems
industry in India.
• He is one of the richest people in India with a net
worth of US$27.1 billion as of August 2021.

3. • Nadar was born in 1945 in Moolaipozhi Village,
Thoothukudi district,Tamil Nadu.
• Nadar studied at Town Higher Secondary School,
Kumbakonam.
• Nadar received a pre-university degree in the
American College, Madurai.

4. • Nadar began his career at Walchand group's Cooper
Engineering Ltd. in Micro comp as as a systems
analyst Pune in 1967.
• In 1968, He Moved To Delhi Where He Worked As
EngineerWith DCM.
• He soon gave it up to begin his own venture, in
partnerships with several friends and colleagues.
• These partners were Ajai Chowdhry (Ex-Chairman,
HCL), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and Chairman,
Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya, S.

5. • HCL was founded in 1976, with an investment of Rs.
187,000.
• In 1980, HCL ventured into the international market
with the opening of Far East Computers in Singapore to
sell IT hardware.
• The venture reported Rs 1 million revenue in the first
year and continued to address the Singapore operations
• Received support from the Uttar Pradesh government to
setup their manufacturing unit in Noida with 26 % share

6. • After expansion of business, Mr. Nadar decided to increase demand for IT
education and ComputerTraining.
• In 1981 he setup NIIT (National Institute of Information Technology) to
impart high quality education.
• In 1991 HCL entered partnership with HP(Hewlett-Packard)to form HCL HP
Ltd.
• Looking beyond PCs, HCL tied up with Nokia for distributing cell phones and
with Ericsson for distributing switches.
• In 1996 HCL became an enterprise which comprises two companies listed in

7. • HCL has been managing orders at India’s National Stock Exchange (NSC)
• In mid-90’s, HCL automated the NSE across 261 cities through a network
of 3,000 tiny satellites.
• HCL is involved in the making of Boeing 787-Dreamline.
• Shiv Nadar is a member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of
Business (ISB), Hyderabad.
• He founded the SSN college of Engineering in Chennai which is a premier
institute in India.

• India’s first branded home PC BusyBee in 1985.
• Beanstalk was launched in 1995 by HCL.

Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his contribution
to IT industry.
• In 2007, Madras University awarded him honorary doctorate
degree (D Sc) for his contributions in promoting software
technology.
• Nadar was also recognized as E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year
2007 (Services).
• In 1995 he became the Dataquest IT Man of the year.
• In 2005 he was bestowed with CNBC Business Excellence
Award.
• In 2006 received an Honorary Fellowship of All India
