The Sacred Thread Ceremony, or Upanayana, is a Hindu rite of passage ceremony that marks a boy's transition to adulthood. During the ceremony, the boy's head is shaved and he is presented to the Gods. He promises to obey his Guru or spiritual advisor. The Guru then whispers instructions in his ear. The boy is given his sacred thread, made of three cotton strands worn over the shoulder for life. He is blessed and expected to lead a pure life of study and good conduct.
