The Libyan government is working to establish control over militias and improve security. The army chief of staff has agreed to coordinate more closely with the Misrata and Zintan militias to support expanded army operations against other militias and pro-Qaddafi forces. The army has begun operations against Ansar al-Sharia south of Benghazi, capturing commanders. Army and Misrata forces also engaged in fighting in Bani Walid against pro-Qaddafi forces to appease Misrata commanders seeking revenge for the death of one of their officials. However, the security situation is expected to remain precarious through 2013.
