Alternatives to ‘UCAS’
• Private Colleges / universities in the UK
• Universities in Europe, America, etc.
General advice:
• Consider these options early – pros and cons.
• Apply to UCAS first.

Ratcliffe College
A concern ?
• “I’ve heard that it is more difficult to get a
place at a good university if the student is at an
independent school”
Higher Education Information
Ratcliffe College
A reassurance !
• In hugely oversubscribed subjects, it is nothing
new for even outstanding candidates to receive
very few offers, or even none, if they try
exclusively for highly selective universities
• Overall, HMC has no evidence to suggest that
our schools as a whole are suffering
disproportionately.
Higher Education Information
Ratcliffe College
An uncomfortable truth
• Many courses in strategically important and
vulnerable subjects – including the sciences,
engineering, languages and economics – remain
heavily reliant on independent school candidates for
their survival.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thank Andy H.Ed. Applications are managed in different ways by different schools & colleges. If asked to summarise R.C. priorities: groups and individual support / start & complete applications early. Also a brief overview of financial arrangements relating to H.Ed.
  • #3 Several sensible options for students after A’levels. Foundation degrees – If wrong A’ level subjects for degree / if A’ level grades too low for degree. F.E. – e.g. Art Foundation course – usually at a local College or university. Typically, at Rcoll, ~90% ucas  degree application
  • #4 H.Ed. Subject interests – if you know them, e.g. for enjoyment: English – reading of different genres History – Watch time team regularly Vet Sci – Volunteer at local pet shop, vet’s or farm? Politics / Business / Economics – Read newspapers or on-line news Also, further chances for W.Exp. in Y12 Not tick box exercises – Need to reflect on experiences – learn from them / develop views & awareness
  • #5 1st term to settle in / adapt to requirements of AS study. *** Booklet *** Then it’s time to plan what comes after Y13
  • #7 OxB, Med, Vet, Dent – Deadline end of Sept Aim of early application = early offers = early motivation. Also: focus on A2 work. Deadline for CF/CI = early May. We advise Y13 – wait for Jan exam results & update predicted grades (mid March.) A’level results – CF or CI – or clearing = marketplace. Much staff support to help (usually very few) students through clearing.
