Hideyoshi, who took over after Oda Nobunaga's death in 1582, helped transition Japan to a more peaceful era through reforms like the cadastral survey and census while avoiding destruction during conquests. However, Hideyoshi also displayed paranoid behavior like persecuting Sen no Rikyu and Toyotomi Hidetsugu. His costly and unsuccessful invasion of Korea in the 1590s drained resources from both Japan and Korea. After Hideyoshi's death, his regime gave way to the Tokugawa Shogunate within Japan, while Korea suffered painful recovery and Ming China's power declined more rapidly.

Migration and modernity and identity in east asia (MWWHA 2016)
A dramatic increase in physical mobility is a hallmark of the transition to modernity in any society. The combination of economic industrialization, mechanization of transportation and proletarianization of labor makes migration necessary for effective development. This paper will examine concepts of modernity to elucidate the central role played by migration in transition to economic, social, cultural, and political modernity. Changes in internal and external migration in 19th and 20th century China, Japan, and Korea will be examined along with conventional historiographical periodization to see how understanding modernity as movement can and should alter our understanding of East Asian history.

Japan continued expanding by defeating Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, eliminating their influence in Korea and Manchuria. North Korea: Hangover of the 20th Century
North Korea is often portrayed as a 'rogue state' and 'unpredictable' but like any other state it has a history which has to be taken into account to make sense of its present. Throughout the 20th century, Northern Korea has been on the front lines between empires, and between imperialists and liberators. The end of the Cold War globally has not solved the Korean separation the way it solved the German one, though the ideological rhetoric has changed. North Korean leadership invokes this history regularly to explain and justify its positions, and this has to be taken seriously in any analysis of North Korea's 21st century development.
Along with Imperialisms past and present, North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs are offshoots of 20th century processes of proliferation, in which weapons technology passed from state to state, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. Perhaps more importantly, North Korea is drawing on the experience of disarmament over the last 25 years, a process that has not always gone well for states that surrender their nuclear weapons capacity.
All this is true, but perhaps more importantly, it appears to be the foundation of the North Korean understanding of how we got to this point, and what matters in this moment: regime survival in the face of multiple hostile controlling empires. We are historical beings, etc.

The history of Japan is a rich and fascinating tale that spans thousands of years. Here's an overview of the key periods and events in Japanese history:
Ancient Japan (Prehistoric - 538 AD).
Prehistoric Period: The Japanese archipelago was inhabited by hunter-gatherer societies around 30,000 BC. They developed a unique culture known as the Jomon period, characterized by pottery and a semi-sedentary lifestyle.

Yayoi Period.
Around 300 BC, rice agriculture and metalworking techniques were introduced to Japan by migrants from the Asian mainland. This period saw the establishment of agricultural communities and social stratification.
Yayoi Queen
Kofun Period.
From the 3rd to the 6th century, large burial mounds called kofun were constructed, indicating the rise of powerful clans and the emergence of a centralized political structure.
Classical Japan (538 - 1185).
Asuka Period: Buddhism was officially introduced in 538, and the country's first centralized state was established under the Yamato clan. The adoption of Chinese culture and the Taika Reforms in the 7th century helped consolidate political power.
Nara Period.
In 710, the capital was moved to Nara, and Japan experienced significant cultural and intellectual growth.

Buddhism flourished, and the country established diplomatic relations with China.
Heian Period.
In 794, the capital shifted to Heian-kyo (modern-day Kyoto). This era is renowned for its flourishing art, literature, and the rise of the samurai class. The famous literary work "The Tale of Genji" was written during this period.

Medieval Japan (1185 - 1603).
Kamakura Period: The Minamoto clan defeated their rivals and established the Kamakura shogunate in 1185, marking the beginning of samurai-dominated governments. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century were repelled with the help of a divine wind (kamikaze).

Muromachi Period.
The Ashikaga shogunate came to power in 1336, leading to a decentralized feudal system. This era witnessed the zenith of Zen Buddhism and the flourishing of traditional arts such as tea ceremonies, Noh theater, and ink painting.
Murom chi
Sengoku Period.
A period of intense civil wars among rival feudal lords, known as daimyo, characterized the late 15th to the late 16th century. It eventually led to the rise of the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga and his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Edo Period: Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603, initiating a long period of relative peace and stability. The country was politically unified, and

After World War II ended in 1945, Japan made a new start toward economic reconstruction as a democratic and pacifist state. Thanks to its highly educated and abundant labor force and to the concentration of capital and resources in certain key industries, such as electric power and steel, Japan succeeded in recovering from the ruins of war and achieving industrialization during the 1950s and 1960s.
Key concepts to remember about china
1) Geographic features like mountains and deserts isolated parts of China and affected development, while resources like coal and iron attracted foreign trade and imperialism.
2) Confucianism encouraged harmony and filial piety, while Legalism saw order through strict laws; these philosophies influenced Chinese society.
3) The Opium War marked China's decline as European powers imposed unequal treaties and took territories, starting the "Century of Humiliation" and weakening China.
Influences Of The Meiji Era

North Korea: Hangover of the 20th Century
North Korea is often portrayed as a 'rogue state' and 'unpredictable' but like any other state it has a history which has to be taken into account to make sense of its present. Throughout the 20th century, Northern Korea has been on the front lines between empires, and between imperialists and liberators. The end of the Cold War globally has not solved the Korean separation the way it solved the German one, though the ideological rhetoric has changed. North Korean leadership invokes this history regularly to explain and justify its positions, and this has to be taken seriously in any analysis of North Korea's 21st century development.
Along with Imperialisms past and present, North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs are offshoots of 20th century processes of proliferation, in which weapons technology passed from state to state, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. Perhaps more importantly, North Korea is drawing on the experience of disarmament over the last 25 years, a process that has not always gone well for states that surrender their nuclear weapons capacity.
All this is true, but perhaps more importantly, it appears to be the foundation of the North Korean understanding of how we got to this point, and what matters in this moment: regime survival in the face of multiple hostile controlling empires. We are historical beings, etc.
Diaspora and Modernity: Infrastructure and Nationalism in Transnational Immi...

20th Century Fascism
Fascism believes in actions motivated by heroism rather than economics. It rejects the idea that society can be directed by majority rule or class warfare alone. For fascism, the state is absolute and individuals are relative, meant to serve the state. The fascist state organizes society but leaves room for individual liberty, as long as it is not harmful or useless freedom. Fascism sees imperialism and expansion as signs of a rising people and renunciation as a sign of decay. It demands discipline and sacrifice to coordinate people behind the goals of the state.
Migration and Modernity in East Asia (ASPAC 2015)

It discusses how modernization and the transition to economic and social modernity cannot occur without migration. However, many definitions of modernity fail to include new patterns and high volumes of human movement as a primary component. Hastily Assembled Lecture Notes on Terrorism and Chechnya
The document provides background information on terrorism and the history of Chechnya. Early Japanese Food History
Early Japanese food history was characterized by seasonal migrations and foraging from around 13,000 BCE to 900 BCE during the Jomon period. Later in the Jomon period, horticulture was introduced, including melons, burdock, beans, barley and millet. From 900 BCE to 250 CE in the Yayoi period, early rice agriculture developed alongside continued foraging, fishing and hunting. Rice, barley, millet and other grains as well as pigs and octopus traps were cultivated and domesticated. From the 3rd to 6th century in the Tomb culture period, Yayoi patterns continued alongside the emergence of stoneware and sake fermentation. Population growth and political consolidation also occurred.

Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal: Islamic Gunpowder Turkic Empires
The document summarizes three Islamic gunpowder empires - the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires. All three empires emerged after the Mongol conquests and made extensive use of gunpowder weapons. They had some common elements like nomadic Turkish rulers and influence of Sufism, but also faced common problems as they struggled with the costs of warfare, weak meritocracies, and resistance to new technology.
