Deep learning technologies are at the core of the current revolution in artificial intelligence for multimedia data analysis. The convergence of large-scale annotated datasets and affordable GPU hardware has allowed the training of neural networks for data analysis tasks which were previously addressed with hand-crafted features. Architectures such as convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks or Q-nets for reinforcement learning have shaped a brand new scenario in signal processing. This project generates visual summaries of events depicted from egocentric photos taken with a wearable camera. These summaries are addressed to mild-dementia patients in order to exercise their memory in a daily base. The main contribution is an iterative approach that guarantees the semantic diversity of the summary and a novel soft metric to assess subjective results. Medical experts validated the proposed solution with a Mean Opinion Score of 4.6 out of of 5.0. The flexibility and quality of the solution was also tested in the 2015 Retrieving Diverse Social Images Task from the scientific international benchmark, MediaEval.

Aaron Roth, Associate Professor, University of Pennsylvania, at MLconf NYC 2017
Aaron Roth is an Associate Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the Warren Center for Network and Data Science, and co-director of the Networked and Social Systems Engineering (NETS) program. Previously, he received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University and spent a year as a postdoctoral researcher at Microsoft Research New England. He is the recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) awarded by President Obama in 2016, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, an NSF CAREER award, and a Yahoo! ACE award. His research focuses on the algorithmic foundations of data privacy, algorithmic fairness, game theory and mechanism design, learning theory, and the intersections of these topics. Together with Cynthia Dwork, he is the author of the book “The Algorithmic Foundations of Differential Privacy.”

In this talk, we will give a friendly introduction to Differential Privacy, a rigorous methodology for analyzing data subject to provable privacy guarantees, that has recently been widely deployed in several settings. The talk will specifically focus on the relationship between differential privacy and machine learning, which is surprisingly rich. This includes both the ability to do machine learning subject to differential privacy, and tools arising from differential privacy that can be used to make learning more reliable and robust (even when privacy is not a concern).

Hanie Sedghi is a Research Scientist at Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2). Her research interests include large-scale machine learning, high-dimensional statistics and probabilistic models. More recently, she has been working on inference and learning in latent variable models. She has received her Ph.D. from University of Southern California with a minor in Mathematics in 2015. She was also a visiting researcher at University of California, Irvine working with professor Anandkumar during her Ph.D. She received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.

Neural networks have revolutionized performance across multiple domains such as computer vision and speech recognition. However, training a neural network is a highly non-convex problem and the conventional stochastic gradient descent can get stuck in spurious local optima. We propose a computationally efficient method for training neural networks that also has guaranteed risk bounds. It is based on tensor decomposition which is guaranteed to converge to the globally optimal solution under mild conditions. We explain how this framework can be leveraged to train feedforward and recurrent neural networks.

This thesis constitutes one of the first investigations that lie at the intersection of social influence propagation, viral marketing, and social advertising. The objective of this thesis is to take the algorithmic aspects of viral marketing out of the lab, and further enhance these aspects to account for the real world social advertisement models, by drawing on the viral marketing literature to study social influence aware ad allocation for social advertising. To this end, we take a first step towards enabling social influence online analytics in support of viral marketing decision making, and propose efficient influence indexing framework that can accurately answer topic-aware viral marketing queries with milliseconds response time. We then initiate investigation in the area of social advertising through the viral marketing lens, aligned with real world social advertisement models, and introduce two fundamental optimization problems, regarding the allocation of ads to social network users under social influence. We devise greedy approximation algorithms with provable approximation guarantees for the novel problems introduced. We also develop scalable versions of our approximation algorithms by leveraging the notion of reverse reachability sampling on social graphs, and experimentally confirm that our algorithms are scalable and deliver high quality solutions.

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 55th Annual Meeting 2011
Maria C. R. Harrington, Ph.D. Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 55th Annual Meeting, a paper on Serious Games. This was fun, it was in Las Vegas after all. The lost opportunity was that Christopher D. Wickens. Ph.D. was there, and I failed to meet him. I am a big fan of his work, it is the standard by which all HF/HCI should be measured, and much of my work is directly built on his work, extended into new areas, where I am sure, he never imagined. But, that is what happens when an artist gets a Ph.D. in information science. Also, I met some excellent project managers and industry personnel in the serious games space. They are all young and beautiful and smart.

Using Cursor Hints to Supplement a Less Interruptive Desktop Notification
In this study we designed an assistive notification mechanism that did not interrupt users' primary task so that they could focus on their main activity in a desktop environment. When a notification appeared in the peripheral area of the users' field of view, we gave hints such as the color of cursor or a label to cursor to lead their attention to the notification that was originally outside of users' field of view. To test our mechanism, we performed a multi-task experiment in a desktop environment with a word-finding game and the mouse cursor hints. The result revealed that the color hint as well as label hint coming from the cursor could increase the accuracy of participants’ ability to aware of the notification and decrease their subjective frustration while having little effect on their primary task. This implies that these approaches can be a potential assistive mechanism to current notification systems in a desktop environment.

Collocated, face-to-face teamwork remains a pervasive mode of working, which is hard to replicate online. Team members’ embodied, multimodal interaction with each other and artefacts has been studied by researchers, but due to its complexity, has remained opaque to automated analysis. However, the ready availability of sensors makes it increasingly affordable to instrument work spaces to study teamwork and groupwork. The possibility of visualising key aspects of a collaboration has huge potential for both academic and professional learning, but a frontline challenge is the enrichment of quantitative data streams with the qualitative insights needed to make sense of them. In response, we introduce the concept of collaboration translucence, an approach to make visible selected features of group activity. This is grounded both theoretically (in the physical, epistemic, social and affective dimensions of group activity), and contextually (using domain-specific concepts). We illustrate the approach from the automated analysis of healthcare simulations to train nurses, generating four visual proxies that fuse multimodal data into higher order patterns.

Matching Attentional Draw with Utility in Interruption
This research examines a design guideline that aims to increase the positive perception of interruptions. The guideline advocates matching the amount of attention attracted by an interruption’s notification method (attentional draw) to the utility of the interruption content. Our first experiment examined a set of 10 visual notification signals in terms of their detection times and established a set of three significantly different signals along the spectrum of attentional draw. Our second experiment investigated matching these different signals to interruption content with different levels of utility. Results indicate that the matching strategy decreases annoyance and increases perception of benefit compared to a strategy that uses the same signal regardless of interruption utility, with no significant impact on workload or performance. Design implications arising from the second experiment as well as recommendations for future work are discussed.

Neuroscience tools and theories can help to measure and understand the emotion and cognitive state of learners. Recent results in the field of neuroeducation demonstrate that tools such as oculometry, automatic facial analysis, electroencephalography and electrodermal activity can be used to infer constructs such as engagement and focused attention in learning context. The presentation reviews results from recent and ongoing scientific projects and presents new and innovative ways to study learning in gamified context.

Dr Pierre-Majorique Léger is a full professor in information technologies at HEC Montréal, director of the ERPsim Lab (erpsim.hec.ca) and co-director of Tech3Lab (tech3lab.hec.ca). He holds a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal and has done post-doctoral studies in information technologies at HEC Montréal and NYU Stern. He is also Invited professor at Henry B.Tippie College of Business (University of Iowa) and Tuck School of Business (Dartmouth University). Dr Léger is specialist in the field of user experience (UX). His research focuses on the use of neurophysiogical measures to infer emotional and cognitive states in learning context. He is a also principal inventor of ERPsim, a simulation game to teach business application software, which is now used in more than 220 universities worldwide and many Fortune 1000 organisations such as Boeing, Coca-Cola, 3M, Kraft, Caterpillar, Pfizer and SAP.

Charland is Associate professor and a recognized expert in the field of science and technology education. With his physics background in signal analysis, his current research hinges on cognitive neuroscience methodologies in order to better understand learning and instruction in science and technology education. His current work focuses on methodological advances in developing more ecologically-valid contexts in which the neuroscientific equipment can be used to inform the education literature. In a recent study, he developed a real time engagement and workload monitoring cockpit to study subjects in authentic learning. The Learner is Not a Black Box : Measuring Emotion, Engagement and Learning W...Pierre-Majorique Léger
Neuroscience tools and theories can help to measure and understand the emotion and cognitive state of learners. Recent results in the field of neuroeducation demonstrate that tools such as oculometry, automatic facial analysis, electroencephalography and electrodermal activity can be used to infer constructs such as engagement and focused attention in learning context. The presentation reviews results from recent and ongoing scientific projects and presents new and innovative ways to study learning in gamified context.
About Prof. Pierre-Majorique Léger Ph.D. (pml@hec.ca)
Dr Pierre-Majorique Léger is a full professor in information technologies at HEC Montréal, director of the ERPsim Lab (erpsim.hec.ca) and co-director of Tech3Lab (tech3lab.hec.ca). He holds a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal and has done post-doctoral studies in information technologies at HEC Montréal and NYU Stern. He is also Invited professor at Henry B.Tippie College of Business (University of Iowa) and Tuck School of Business (Dartmouth University). Dr Léger is specialist in the field of user experience (UX). His research focuses on the use of neurophysiogical measures to infer emotional and cognitive states in learning context. He is a also principal inventor of ERPsim, a simulation game to teach business application software, which is now used in more than 220 universities worldwide and many Fortune 1000 organisations such as Boeing, Coca-Cola, 3M, Kraft, Caterpillar, Pfizer and SAP.
About Prof. Patrick Charland Ph.D. (charland.patrick@uqam.ca)
Charland is Associate professor and a recognized expert in the field of science and technology education. With his physics background in signal analysis, his current research hinges on cognitive neuroscience methodologies in order to better understand learning and instruction in science and technology education. His current work focuses on methodological advances in developing more ecologically-valid contexts in which the neuroscientific equipment can be used to inform the education literature. In a recent study, he developed a real time engagement and workload monitoring cockpit to study subjects in authentic learning. Charland is also a senior adviser for several countries or institutions (Canada, Niger, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Chile, etc.) in curriculum development for STEM related issues.Similar to Human Factors and Ergonomics 2011 Maria C.
