A blend of real-world
skills, a touch of fun, and
just the right amount of
drama

• Students acting as casualties, with ultra-realistic injuries
created by Arts University Bournemouth
• Tasks include triage, stabilization, and patient handovers—all
under pressure

From alien invasions to zombies, and now
Godzilla, each year we ‘mix’ in more complex
challenges.
Guided by our expert ‘judges’ (paramedics and
clinicians), students refine their skills in real time.
No ‘soggy bottoms’—just hands-on learning and
resilient practitioners!"

Editor's Notes

  • #1 SHARE SOUND MUTE SLIDE 14 Welcome to Bake off! Learning technology team at BU Showcase examples of how staff at BU have leveraged technologies to produce innovative pedagogical practice – all within the framework of the Bake Off format.
  • #2 Tracey GBBO Quintessentially British – genteel baking in a tent but with a competitive edge, judged by Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, comedic commentary by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond More than 40 International versions, from America, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, Italy … Uruguay - addictive viewing Format of show – 3 challenges each week: Signature: produce a bake adhering to baseline requirements but with the freedom to introduce new elements and show personality – testing their personal recipes and creativity on a commonly known food e.g. jaffa cakes Technical: receive a recipe with limited instructions - demonstrates technical proficiency in baking, in timed conditions gives them opportunity to develop their skills e.g. custard creams – deceptively tricky Showstopper: fosters creativity and experimentation, bakers encouraged to push their limits – demonstrate creativity and technical skill e.g. illusion cake – a cake that looks like something else – has to be realistic but still taste great
  • #3 Scott – CRT Showcased through a project working with colleagues in the Faculty of Science and Technology to create consistent unit design across a department and improve the student experience of the VLE.
  • #7 Tracey showcased through an Escape Room activity that we ran with academic staff designed to get them engaging with innovative technologies and to consider introducing their use into their teaching practice.
  • #8 objective: introducing staff to technology can use for education from equipment we’ve invested in (PIL – VR headsets, 360 cameras) to showcase the digital tools and platforms available - inc Brightspace functionality (VLE), H5P, AI avatar software Demo some pedagogical approaches and ease of use - to inspire staff to think about creating their own immersive experiences Idea of an escape room – ran at our summer conference An active and engaging way to demonstrate the capabilities of the tools, make the content relatable, and highlight the potential of digital tools for teaching F2F with online and classroom activities
  • #9 Built the narrative – impending threat of ChatGPT taking over the world -work through a series of tasks using different tools to save the world Scaffolded through Brightspace – quiz tool, conditionally released content, created graphic messaging in line with our theme >AI generated videos with avatars to set mission briefs and introduce each stage - HeyGen and Synthesia VR apps to identify locations >360 camera used as CCTV – reading a riddle (password in white text)
  • #10 H5P content authoring tool – image juxtaposition to create password encryption puzzle -piloting tool – opportunity to test its capabilities Kuula 360 software – gif of Scott
  • #11 Was it successful? Amateur bakers in the tent– provided a judgment free zone, collegiate atmosphere, -LT support on hand Friendly competition – teams helping /not helping each other Humour – fun for participants, but also for us putting it together Would we do it again? A lot of work but – got a basic recipe for us or staff member to follow another time -all resources showcased on BS along with guidance on how we did it
  • #12 Jakob Showcased through a mass casualty simulation event in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences where Paramedic Science students were immersed in an authentic learning environment following a mythical 'Godzilla attack' scenario.
