Henry VIII had 6 wives and sought to divorce his first wife Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn. When the Pope denied his request for an annulment in 1527, Henry declared himself the head of the Church of England in 1534 and obtained approval for the divorce. This started the English Reformation and led Henry to dissolve the monasteries between 1536-1541.
