Social Perception Research Topic Proposal
Social personal perception is the way a person perceives and understands issues. This is an interesting topic to do research because people are different, and they perceive issues from an array of viewpoints. For my research proposal, the topic I would like to investigate is the determinants of social perception. My main objective is to identify and determine the various factors that determine how people perceive issues. I have seen how people, cultures, nationalities can perceive the same action in different ways, such as kneeling during the National Anthem at professional football games. Upon preliminary research, some literature that I read claimed that both internal and external factors determine a person’s perception. My research shall highlight on pointing out the various internal and external factors, as well as clarifying how these factors shapes and forms the perception that the person shows.
This is an important psychological area of research because it would help to establish a deeper understanding of why people differ and tend to misunderstand each other when it comes to perceiving issues. It is an area of research that can help people understand and embrace each other despite their differences in perception. Moreover, I think most people are unaware of their inherent biases and people tend to retreat to their corners where it is safe. My goal is to get a better understanding and inform the reader to consider another point of view.

of Critical Thinking in Social Work

Critical thinking is frequently used to describe how social workers ought to reason. But how well has
this concept helped us to develop a normative description of what it means to think like a social
worker? This critical review mines the literature on critical thinking for insight into the kinds of
thinking social work scholars consider important. Analysis indicates that critical thinking in social
work is generally treated as a form of practical reasoning. Further, epistemological disagreements
divide 2 distinct proposals for how practical reasoning in social work should proceed. Although
these disagreements have received little attention in the literature, they have important implications
for social work practice.
In 1991 John Seelig argued that the concept of critical thinking was the best way to answer the
question of how social workers ought to think (p. 21). Since the publication of Seelig’s article,
critical thinking has become the dominant way of describing desirable forms of reasoning1 in
American social work. Other authors began to promote critical thinking in social work at
approximately the same time (Gambrill, 1990; Gibbs, 1991; Witkin, 1990), and the term caught
on quickly. In 1992 the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) began requiring that
baccalaureate and master’s programs teach students to “apply critical thinking skills” in profess-
ional social work practice (CSWE, 1992a, 1992b, as quoted in Gambrill & Gibbs, 1995, p. 194;
Huff, 2000, p. 400). More recently, the CSWE’s Educational Policy and Accreditation
Standards (EPAS) made critical thinking one of 10 core competencies that all bachelor of social
work (BSW) and master’s of social work (MSW) programs should cultivate in their students,
presenting a guiding description of the concept that emphasizes “principles of logic, scientific
inquiry, and reasoned discernment” (CSWE, 2008; see Figure 1). Thus critical thinking has
become a major goal of every social work curriculum in the country.
However, as Deal and Pittman (2009) pointed out, the scholarly literature on critical thinking
in social work is still quite spare. We know very little about whether or how social work
education teaches students to think critically, let alone the extent to which such education affects

Conformity and obedience are forms of social influence, one of the subfields within social psychology. Conformity research addresses the influence the group majority has on individual and group behavior. Sherif and Asch conducted seminal studies on conformity. These researchers and others provide a clear picture of the influence of a group majority on the individual and factors that influence conformity. Research also provides insights into how a minority can influence a group (Fiske, 2014).

Obedience
Another topic within the social psychology subfield of social influence is obedience.Obedience is the impact authority can have on individual behavior. Stanley Milgram pioneered the work in obedience by conducting several studies involving an authority figure and a participant who had to administer (fake) electric shocks to a “learner.” His videotaped studies produced a sobering picture of the strength of the authority figure/subordinate relationship.

In this article, Mezirow (2003) makes a distinction between "instrumental" and "communicative" learning. One thing is certain: if we gave as much attention to the non-instrumental forms of intelligence--like goodness, compassion, forgiveness, wonder, self-motivation, creativity, humor, love, and other non-measured forms of intelligence in our school curriculums, we'd see better people, actors in the world, and interested investigators than we currently have graduating high school.

is one example. Its originator, John Bowlby, was directly influenced by Freud, but because of Bowlby’s experiences in working with disturbed children, he believed that a child’s psychosocial development is linked to their attachment to the mother. Because all

must be tested using empirical research methods, Mary Ainsworth tested John Bowlby’s theory using the Strange Situation experiment, which involved observing children react to caregivers and strangers. The results from her research led to what we now know as attachment styles.

Social personal perception is the way a person perceives and understands issues. This is an interesting topic to do research because people are different, and they perceive issues from an array of viewpoints. For my research proposal, the topic I would like to investigate is the determinants of social perception. My main objective is to identify and determine the various factors that determine how people perceive issues. I have seen how people, cultures, nationalities can perceive the same action in different ways, such as kneeling during the National Anthem at professional football games. Upon preliminary research, some literature that I read claimed that both internal and external factors determine a person’s perception. The relationship between creativity and logical thinking, particularly critical thinking, has been a matter of debate so far. The present study tries to observe whether a significant relationship exists between the two concepts. To this end, the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was administered to 23 Iranian ESP teachers in order to have an understanding of their level of creativity. Then, a test which is aimed at making participants use their critical thinking ability was given to the teachers. This test was selected from the PhD entrance exam in Iran, typically known as the Logical Tests of GMAT. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used in order to identify whether a significant relationship exists between the two variables. Findings indicated that although there has been a direct relationship between creativity and critical thinking, it is not significant to a high degree. In this case, teachers who have been measured to be more creative could achieve a better score in GMAT test. With regard to the current results, the methods which tend to help the teachers to act more creatively are recommended to the ESP teachers in order to help them perform more critically in the desired situations.

Critical thinking is frequently used to describe how social workers ought to reason. But how well has
this concept helped us to develop a normative description of what it means to think like a social
worker? This critical review mines the literature on critical thinking for insight into the kinds of
thinking social work scholars consider important. Analysis indicates that critical thinking in social
work is generally treated as a form of practical reasoning. Further, epistemological disagreements
divide 2 distinct proposals for how practical reasoning in social work should proceed. Although
these disagreements have received little attention in the literature, they have important implications
for social work practice.
In 1991 John Seelig argued that the concept of critical thinking was the best way to answer the
question of how social workers ought to think (p. 21). Since the publication of Seelig’s article,
critical thinking has become the dominant way of describing desirable forms of reasoning1 in
American social work. Other authors began to promote critical thinking in social work at
approximately the same time (Gambrill, 1990; Gibbs, 1991; Witkin, 1990), and the term caught
on quickly. In 1992 the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) began requiring that
baccalaureate and master’s programs teach students to “apply critical thinking skills” in profess-
ional social work practice (CSWE, 1992a, 1992b, as quoted in Gambrill & Gibbs, 1995, p. 194;
Huff, 2000, p. 400). More recently, the CSWE’s Educational Policy and Accreditation
Standards (EPAS) made critical thinking one of 10 core competencies that all bachelor of social
work (BSW) and master’s of social work (MSW) programs should cultivate in their students,
presenting a guiding description of the concept that emphasizes “principles of logic, scientific
inquiry, and reasoned discernment” (CSWE, 2008; see Figure 1). Thus critical thinking has
become a major goal of every social work curriculum in the country.
However, as Deal and Pittman (2009) pointed out, the scholarly literature on critical thinking
in social work is still quite spare. We know very little about whether or how social work
education teaches students to think critically, let alone the extent to which such education affects

Conformity and obedience are forms of social influence, one of the subfields within social psychology. Conformity research addresses the influence the group majority has on individual and group behavior. Sherif and Asch conducted seminal studies on conformity. These researchers and others provide a clear picture of the influence of a group majority on the individual and factors that influence conformity. Research also provides insights into how a minority can influence a group (Fiske, 2014).

In this article, Mezirow (2003) makes a distinction between "instrumental" and "communicative" learning. "Instrumental learning" refers to those processes which measure and gauge learning, such as tests, grades, comments, quizzes, attendance records and the like. "Communicative learning," on the other hand, refers to understanding created over time between individuals in what Mezirow calls "critical-dialectical-discourse," (p. 59) which is a fancy way of saying, important conversation between 2 or more speakers. Another key idea Mezirow discusses is "transformative learning," (p. 61) which changes the mind, the heart, the values and beliefs of people so that they may act better in the world. Mezirow argues that "hungry, desperate, homeless, sick, destitute, and intimidated people obviously cannot participate fully and freely in discourse" (p. 59). On the one hand, he is right: there are some people who cannot fully engage because their crisis is so long and deep, they are prevented. But, I don't think Mezirow should make the blanket assumption that everyone in unfortunate circumstances is incapable of entering the discourse meaningfully. One thing is certain: if we gave as much attention to the non-instrumental forms of intelligence--like goodness, compassion, forgiveness, wonder, self-motivation, creativity, humor, love, and other non-measured forms of intelligence in our school curriculums, we'd see better people, actors in the world, and interested investigators than we currently have graduating high school.

A Systematic Approach To Teaching Critical Thinking Through Debate

Social Perception Research Topic Proposal
Social personal perception is the way a person perceives and understands issues. This is an interesting topic to do research because people are different, and they perceive issues from an array of viewpoints. For my research proposal, the topic I would like to investigate is the determinants of social perception. My main objective is to identify and determine the various factors that determine how people perceive issues. I have seen how people, cultures, nationalities can perceive the same action in different ways, such as kneeling during the National Anthem at professional football games. Upon preliminary research, some literature that I read claimed that both internal and external factors determine a person’s perception. The relationship between creativity and logical thinking, particularly critical thinking, has been a matter of debate so far. The present study tries to observe whether a significant relationship exists between the two concepts. To this end, the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) was administered to 23 Iranian ESP teachers in order to have an understanding of their level of creativity. Then, a test which is aimed at making participants use their critical thinking ability was given to the teachers. This test was selected from the PhD entrance exam in Iran, typically known as the Logical Tests of GMAT. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used in order to identify whether a significant relationship exists between the two variables. Findings indicated that although there has been a direct relationship between creativity and critical thinking, it is not significant to a high degree. In this case, teachers who have been measured to be more creative could achieve a better score in GMAT test. With regard to the current results, the methods which tend to help the teachers to act more creatively are recommended to the ESP teachers in order to help them perform more critically in the desired situations.

Since the United States began using incarceration as its cornerstone of
punishment for those who transgress the law, this method of discipline has been
fraught with problems. One of the most ubiquitous problems found within cor-
rectional institutions are the conditions inmates are forced to live in particularly,
when penal facilities are overcrowded. These conditions have led to extensive
litigation, compelling the judicial system to change. Although overall conditions
have improved, a perpetually increasing inmate population continues to plague
correctional systems as costs continue to rise. As state budgets have become
strained during the economic downturns, many states’ officials view less
punitive measures as possible solutions to the excessive costs of administering
punishment and overcrowded inmate populations. Due to facility overcrowding,
several states have actually been placed under federal court order to reduce their
inmate population in order to protect inmates’ constitutional rights. Although
this has resulted in a change of policies to help alleviate prison overcrowding,
there is little evidence these are anything more than short-term fixes to a
problem with no end in sight.

In the United States, like many other affluent nations, law has become the blueprint
by which society is governed. The concept of punishment is typically connected to
or associated with the law, and usually follows as a consequence of non-compliance
with those directives. As such, the means by which a society administers
punishment is often thoroughly scrutinized to insure fairness and efficiency in
obtaining justice. Incarceration has been the dominant form of punishment in
American society for serious crimes (Ross, 2010; Verro, 2010). In fact, some would
argue that incarceration has been overused to such a degree that it constitutes an
inefficient use of resources.
In recent years, many states have become fiscally strained as the practice of
mass incarceration has come under increased criticism (Ekland-Olson, Barrick, &
Cohen, 1983; Harris, 1991; Lucken, 2011; Nagel 1977). As such, many of these
states are beginning to re-evaluate their use of incarceration in an attempt to better

How This Online Course Works
This course is being offered in a fully online format. This means that all of your course activities will
take place within the Blackboard course. There will not be any specific times when you will have to be

Eater Archetypes:
Brand usage and preferences by consumer segment
The restaurant industry has long relied on demographic factors to
identify and prioritize consumer groups. For example, many
brands currently obsess over attracting Millennials—some
without pausing to consider the variations among consumers
within this demographic cohort. In addition to life stages,
consumer attitudes about health, value, convenience and the
overall role of foodservice in their lives drive significant
differences in preferences and behavior.
With these distinctions in mind, we have updated the Consumer
Brand Metrics (CBM) survey with questions that allow us to
segment consumers into one of seven Eater Archetypes. Each
segment has a distinct psychographic profile, which is outlined in
our recent Consumer Foodservice Landscape. Accordingly, their
patronage of the segments and brands tracked in CBM varies.
This paper explores some differences we can discern after the
initial quarterly results, including the archetypes’ segment usage,
brand patronage and occasion dynamics. Examining CBM data by
Eater Archetype reveals nuances that complement a demographic
profile of a chain’s guests.

Segmenting consumers by psychographic factors, rather than
just demographic characteristics, can lead to a better
understanding of the consumers that matter to your brand and
how to appeal to them.
Key Takeaways
Busy Balancers and Functional Eaters drive usage across
restaurants and convenience stores. Full-service restaurant
(FSR) operators may also consider targeting Foodservice
Hobbyists and Affluent Socializers, as these archetypes
comprise more than a quarter of FSR patrons, on average.
How does foodser vice segment usage vary by archetype?
Driven by unique needs and motivations, Eater Archetypes
gravitate to a wide variety of brands. For example,
McDonald’s, Burger King and Whataburger each
disproportionately attract unique archetypes (Habitual
Matures, Bargain Hunters and Functional Eaters,
respectively).
Which chains do each archetype visit most frequently?
Archetypes that patronize the same restaurant may not use
the brand the same way. For example, usage varies by
daypart, with afternoon snacks skewing to Busy Balancers
and late-night meals driven by Functional Eaters. Archetypes
also diverge in their party composition, as visits with children
skew to Busy Balancers.

For example, when a person is late to a meeting, is it (a) because he or she is a lazy person, (b) because he or she has a poor work ethic, or (c) because of an external event such as a traffic jam on the way to work?
