Discussion 1: Conformity Conformity and obedience are forms of social influence, one of the subfields within social psychology. Conformity research addresses the influence the group majority has on individual and group behavior. Sherif and Asch conducted seminal studies on conformity. These researchers and others provide a clear picture of the influence of a group majority on the individual and factors that influence conformity. Stanley Milgram pioneered the work in obedience by conducting several studies involving an authority figure and a participant who had to administer (fake) electric shocks to a “learner.” His videotaped studies produced a sobering picture of the strength of the authority figure/subordinate relationship. For this Discussion, review this week’s media, Milgram Electric Shock Experiment Video.Consider the conditions that occurred in the video that led to obedience, and think about instances in which obedience may be harmful. Assignment an explanation of conditions necessary for obedience to occur. The intellectual tension between the virtues of basic versus
applied research that characterized an earlier era of psy-
chology is being replaced by an appreciation of creative
applications of all research essential to improving the
quality of human life. Psychologists are positioned to “give
psychology away” to all those who can benefit from our
wisdom. Psychologists were not there 35 years ago when
American Psychological Association (APA) President
George Miller first encouraged us to share our knowledge
with the public. The author argues that psychology is
indeed making a significant difference in people’s lives;
this article provides a sampling of evidence demonstrating
how and why psychology matters, both in pervasive ways
and specific applications. Readers are referred to a newly
developed APA Web site that documents current opera-
tional uses of psychological research, theory, and method-
ology (its creation has been the author’s primary presiden-
tial initiative): www.psychologymatters.org.
Does psychology matter? Does what we do, andhave done for a hundred years or more, reallymake a significant difference in the lives of indi-
viduals or in the functioning of communities and nations?
Can we demonstrate that our theories, our research, our
professional practice, our methodologies, our way of think-
ing about mind, brain, and behavior make life better in any
measurable way? Has what we have to show for our dis-
cipline been applied in the real world beyond academia and
practitioners’ offices to improve health, education, welfare,
safety, organizational effectiveness, and more?
Such questions, and finding their answers, have al-
ways been my major personal and professional concern.
First, as an introductory psychology teacher for nearly six
decades, I have always worked to prove relevance as well
as essence of psychology to my students. Next, as an author
of the now classic basic text, Psychology and Life (Ruch &
Zimbardo, 1971), which claimed to wed psychology to life
applications, I constantly sought to put more psychology in
our lives and more life in our psychology (Gerrig & Zim-
bardo, 2004; Zimbardo, 1992). To reach an even broader
student audience, I have coauthored Core Concepts in
Psychology (Zimbardo, Weber, & Johnson, 2002) that
strives to bring the excitement of scientific and applied
psychology to students in state and community colleges.
In order to further expand the audience for what is best
in psychology, I accepted an invitation to help create, be
scientific advisor for, and narrator of the 26-program PBS
TV series, Discovering Psychology (1990/2001). For this
general public audience, we have provided answers—as
viewable instances—to their “so what?” questions. This
award-winning series is shown both nationally and inter-
nationally (in at least 10 nations) and has been the foun-

Personality impression formation: a correlational-

ABSTRACT
A correlational-experimental design was used to study personality impression forma-
tion. Subjects rated how they would accept a number of hypothetical stimulus people
represented by combinations of self-referent statements denoting opposite poles of
four personality dimensions. They also gave self-endorsement responses to a person-
ality battery which sampled the same four dimensions. Perceivers were classified into
personality types defining levels of a subject's factor which together with four
stimulus cue factors comprised a complete factorial design for analyzing l i e accep-
tance ratings. Although the main experimental results suggested that stimulus cue
integration may be more linear than configural, the nature of subject-cue interactions
illustrated the need for more representative design in social perception research.
The present investigation focussed on how people form impressions of
others based on limited stimulus information. Asch's (1946) pioneering
studies on this problem suggested that people appear to combine stimulus
cues configurally and that certain traits are more central than others in
determining impressions. However, subsequent work within the Asch
paradigm yielded conflicting findings regarding trait centrality (e.g.,
Kelley, 1950; Wishner, 1960). In addition, considerable evidence favouring
more parsimonious linear models of impression formation has also been
obtained (Anderson, 1962; Triandis & Fishbein, 1963; Goldberg, 1968),
even under widely varied stimulus conditions (Partington, 1967). Not-
withstanding this, it is conceivable that die "fit" between such simple
models and obtained impression formation data may be a design artifact.
That is, the predictive power of these simple linear models may have
been a function of "rigorous" experimental paradigms which varied
stimulus cues in a controlled manner while holding constant other poten-
tially important covariates such as perceiver characteristics, nature of the
responses obtained, and situational effects (cf., Bieri, Atkins, Briar, Lea-
man, Miller, & Tripodi, 1966).

Social psychology examines how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of others. Some key topics studied include social cognition, attitudes, prejudice, conformity, obedience, and interpersonal relationships. The field has developed over time through influential early scholars and the emergence of experimental research methods. Important early studies included experiments on social facilitation and conformity. Later landmark studies by Milgram and Zimbardo demonstrated how social roles and obedience to authority can strongly shape behavior in disturbing ways. Theories by scholars such as Festinger, Bandura, Tajfel, and Weiner helped explain key social phenomena such as cognitive dissonance, social learning, social identity, and attribution. example, is not a scientific conclusion. Obser- vation, however, can be the springboard for the construction of a social science theory, as we shall now see in the case of inductive theory.
■■INDUCTIvE THEORy CONSTRUCTION
Quite often, social scientists begin con- structing a theory through the induc- tive method by first observing aspects of social life and then seeking to discover patterns that may point to relatively universal principles. Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss (1967) coined the term grounded theory in reference to this method.
Field research—the direct observation of events in progress—is frequently used to develop theories through observation (see Chapter 10). A long and rich anthropological tradition has seen this method used to good advantage.
Among social scientists of the twentieth cen- tury, no one was more adept at seeing the pat- terns of human behavior through observation than Erving Goffman:
A game such as chess generates a habitable uni- verse for those who can follow it, a plane of being, a cast of characters with a seemingly unlimited number of different situations and acts through which to realize their natures and destinies. Yet much of this is reducible to a small set of interde- pendent rules and practices. If the meaningful- ness of everyday activity is similarly dependent on a closed, finite set of rules, then explication of them would give one a powerful means of analyz- ing social life. — (1974: 5)
In a variety of research efforts, Goffman uncovered the rules of such diverse behaviors as living in a mental institution (1961) and manag- ing the “spoiled identity” of disfiguration (1963). In each case, Goffman observed the phenome- non in depth and teased out the rules governing behavior. Goffman’s research provides an excel- lent example of qualitative field research as a source of grounded theory.

During the 1960s and 1970s, marijuana use on U.S. college campuses was a subject of consid- erable discussion in the popular press. Some people were troubled by marijuana’s popular- ity; others welcomed it. What interests us here is why some students smoked marijuana and others didn’t. A survey of students at the Uni- versity of Hawaii (Takeuchi 1974) provided data to answer that question. While the reasons and practices regarding pot may have changed, the subtle redefinition of what needed explaining is still instructive

ABSTRACT
A correlational-experimental design was used to study personality impression forma-
tion. Subjects rated how they would accept a number of hypothetical stimulus people
represented by combinations of self-referent statements denoting opposite poles of
four personality dimensions. They also gave self-endorsement responses to a person-
ality battery which sampled the same four dimensions. Perceivers were classified into
personality types defining levels of a subject's factor which together with four
stimulus cue factors comprised a complete factorial design for analyzing l i e accep-
tance ratings. Although the main experimental results suggested that stimulus cue
integration may be more linear than configural, the nature of subject-cue interactions
illustrated the need for more representative design in social perception research.
The present investigation focussed on how people form impressions of
others based on limited stimulus information. Asch's (1946) pioneering
studies on this problem suggested that people appear to combine stimulus
cues configurally and that certain traits are more central than others in
determining impressions. However, subsequent work within the Asch
paradigm yielded conflicting findings regarding trait centrality (e.g.,
Kelley, 1950; Wishner, 1960). In addition, considerable evidence favouring
more parsimonious linear models of impression formation has also been
obtained (Anderson, 1962; Triandis & Fishbein, 1963; Goldberg, 1968),
even under widely varied stimulus conditions (Partington, 1967). Not-
withstanding this, it is conceivable that die "fit" between such simple
models and obtained impression formation data may be a design artifact.
That is, the predictive power of these simple linear models may have
been a function of "rigorous" experimental paradigms which varied
stimulus cues in a controlled manner while holding constant other poten-
tially important covariates such as perceiver characteristics, nature of the
responses obtained, and situational effects (cf., Bieri, Atkins, Briar, Lea-
man, Miller, & Tripodi, 1966).

of perceivers would utilize and integrate information when forming im-

■■INDUCTIvE THEORy CONSTRUCTION
Quite often, social scientists begin con- structing a theory through the induc- tive method by first observing aspects of social life and then seeking to discover patterns that may point to relatively universal principles. Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss (1967) coined the term grounded theory in reference to this method.
Field research—the direct observation of events in progress—is frequently used to develop theories through observation (see Chapter 10). A long and rich anthropological tradition has seen this method used to good advantage.
Among social scientists of the twentieth cen- tury, no one was more adept at seeing the pat- terns of human behavior through observation than Erving Goffman:
A game such as chess generates a habitable uni- verse for those who can follow it, a plane of being, a cast of characters with a seemingly unlimited number of different situations and acts through which to realize their natures and destinies. Yet much of this is reducible to a small set of interde- pendent rules and practices. If the meaningful- ness of everyday activity is similarly dependent on a closed, finite set of rules, then explication of them would give one a powerful means of analyz- ing social life. — (1974: 5)
In a variety of research efforts, Goffman uncovered the rules of such diverse behaviors as living in a mental institution (1961) and manag- ing the “spoiled identity” of disfiguration (1963). In each case, Goffman observed the phenome- non in depth and teased out the rules governing behavior. Goffman’s research provides an excel- lent example of qualitative field research as a source of grounded theory.

- 1. Discussion 1: Conformity Conformity and obedience are forms of social influence, one of the subfields within social psychology. Conformity research addresses the influence the group majority has on individual and group behavior. Sherif and Asch conducted seminal studies on conformity. These researchers and others provide a clear picture of the influence of a group majority on the individual and factors that influence conformity. Research also provides insights into how a minority can influence a group (Fiske, 2014). For this Discussion, review this week’s media program, Week 6: The Virtual Office. Consider how conformity occurred in the virtual office and describe the conditions that led to conformity. With these thoughts in mind: Assignment a brief description of two conditions in the media that led to conformity and explain why. Using the current literature, explain one way to alter the conditions in the scenario to prevent conformity. Finally, provide an example where conformity might be good and explain why. . Obedience Another topic within the social psychology subfield of social influence is obedience.Obedience is the impact authority can have on individual behavior. Stanley Milgram pioneered the work in obedience by conducting several studies involving an authority figure and a participant who had to administer (fake) electric shocks to a “learner.” His videotaped studies produced a sobering picture of the strength of the authority figure/subordinate relationship. For this Discussion, review this week’s media, Milgram Electric Shock Experiment Video.Consider the conditions that occurred in the video that led to obedience, and think about instances in which obedience may be harmful. Assignment an explanation of conditions necessary for obedience to occur. Then describe one situation in which obedience is necessary and one situation in which obedience may be harmful and explain why. Use the current literature to support your response.
