Defination of Hedge
Shrubs or trees planted closely at regular intervals to form a continuous
screen are called a hedge. Many other plants such as succulents, cactus and
semi-shrubs also form beautiful and useful hedge.
Hedge is the living fence to demarcate the garden from public road, which
also acts as a barrier. It seperates the drive and parking areas from the main
garden, lawn from the road and any other special feature in private and
public gardens.
Hedge is also necessary for screening a vegetable garden from the flower
garden,children’s corner,servant’s quarter,potting shed,nursery and manure
pit.
Criteria for selecting hedge plant
1.Protective
→This means protection against theft, trespass etc. For this category a
hedge plant should have the following characteristics: quick
growing,hardy including drought resistant
character, thorny, dense, should respond to frequent pruning and
clipping and can be raised quickly by seed or cuttings.
2.Ornamental or screening purposes
→For this category hedge should have attractive foliage or
flowers, should be dense in growth habit and stand regular clipping.
Basis for selecting hedge plants
• Plants having attractive leaves, flowers or both.
• Can be grown easily by seed or cuttings.
• Luxuriant growth with less care and resistant to insect and diseases.
• Grow quickly.
• Bushy with dense leaves and branches.
• Cattle and goat do not eat.
• Can tolerate frequent and heavy pruning.
• Plant should be long lived perennial.
• Can withstand heavy rain and drought.
Classification of hedge
Classification of hedge according to its nature
Hedge with beautiful foliage:Crotons,china box,henna etc.
Hedge with beautiful foliage and flowers:Ixora
(single),Bougainvillea,Togor etc.
Hedge with strong branches and spines:Bamboo
(dwarf),streblus,indian gum tree(babla) etc.
Classification of hedge on the basis of purposes
• Tall hedge:Dwarf bamboo,karanda,Duranta etc.
• Low height hedge:ixora(single),lantana,justicia etc.
• Protective hedge:Duranta,Bougainvillea,Rose etc.
• Ornamental hedge:China rose, china box,croton etc
• Wind break hedge:Dwarf bamboo,streblus,china box etc.
• Screen hedge:Ixora(single),Duranta,karanda etc.
Establishment of Hedge
1.Site selectio and its preparation
• The site for hedge should be slightly raised,well-drained &suuny.
• Loamy soil is the best. The land should be prepared thoroughly by digging
down to a depth of 20cm or more, incorporating organic manure, bonr meal
before planting.
• the width of the bed will depend on the species of the plant, number of rows
and final width of the hedge. The width may be 30-90cm.
• There should have adequate space on both sides of hedge for management.
• The beds should be prepared 3-4 weeks before planting.
2.Plantings time
• Planting of hedge should be done at the beginning of monsoon in June-July.
3.Planting
• A hedge is started by sowing seeds or by putting cutting in situ or by planting
rooted cuttings,generally in double rows.
• Garden hedge may be planted at a spacineof 10-20cm in triangular system.
• Immediately after sowing or planting, watering should be done.
• A large number of seedlings or rooted cuttings should be kept in reserve for
gap filling.
• Weeding is to be done from time to time.
4.Pruning
• When the hedge is about 15-20cm tall,It is topped back to 10cm with hedge
shears.
• Axillary branches will arise.Clipping to a height of 20cm is done when the
shoots are about 25-30cm high.
• In this way regular prunning schedule is to be followed to develop a compact
hedge of desired height.
• At the time of clipping the top of the
hedge, side shoots are to be clipping to
provide a neat framework of the hedge.
• The number and frequency of prunning
will depend on the desired height and
growth of the plant.
• Slow growing plant like china box will
require a longer time and more clipping
for developing a neat compact hedge
than Duranta or Acalypha.
• To obtain a cattle proof hedge, the
hedge should be reinforced by four rows
of barbed wire as the hedge itself may
not be sufficient.
Shape of the hedge
Square cut Round top
Wavy top Column top
Maintenance of hedge
• Hedge bed should always be kept neat and clean.
• Irrigation is to be given according to necessity.
• In white ant infested localities, soil is to be kept moist.
• Gaps in a hedge should be replanted with well grown plants.
• Prunning should be done at regular intervals. No clipping should be done in
winter month.
• The hedge should receive well rotten cowdung @4kg/running meter and
fertilizers @30g each of urea and TSP/meter hedge row and this is to be
applied once in a year.
• Appropriate measures are to be taken against insect and diseases.
