2. Introduction
• India is the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of
climate change
• Climate change is expected to increase the heatwave
frequency and heatwave duration in India by 0.5 events
per decade and 4-7 days per decade
• Environment surrounding us profoundly impacts our health
3. How heat related Illness arises?
These illnesses arise when there is a disruption in
regulating the body’s temperature because heat input
from the environment and body metabolism is
increased compared with output from the skin via
radiation, evaporation, and convection.
4. Heat wave period in India
• From March to July
• Heat wave is considered when maximum temperate of a station
reaches
• >400 C in plains
• >370 C in costal stations
• >300 C in hilly areas
For Plains only
Heatwave: >450 C
Severe Heatwave: >470 C
5. Vulnerable population
• Street Vendors
• Farmers
• Laborers
• Drivers
• Traffic personnel's
• Children below 4 years of age
• Geriatric population (> 60 years old)
• Children and teens who are overweight or wear heavy clothes during
exertion
• People with chronic illness
13. Guidelines for children for sports activity
during summer season
• Screening by coaches/doctors for any health condition
• Fever of GI symptoms: should not participate
• Acclimatization: for 1-2 weeks
• Physical activity should be increased slowly
• Wear light colored clothes, loose fitting
• Adequate hydration during, before and after exertion
• Practice sessions in mornings and evenings
• Resources for rapid cooling (cold water tubs, ice towels)
