this intimate little gem is nestled at the top end
of Gleneagle road, just off streatham high road.
there’s room for just four cosy tables for two and
some bar stools, but friendly team, Davide and
manuele, clearly know their stuff and are lovely
hosts. Davide trained as a chef in tuscany and is
passionate about his native fare. Pasta is made
from scratch daily and each is served with its
own special sauce. Just as passionate about the
environment, all disposable items are biodegrad-
able or compostable.
the menu is surprisingly reasonably priced:
main courses range from £6.00-£9.50 and
sides £5.00-£7.50, making for a budget-friendly
evening out.
We had conchiglie and the lasagne accompanied
by aubergine parmigiana and sautéed spinach.
We waited about 20 minutes as our dishes were
prepared but a substantial offering of focaccia
with an oil/balsamic vinegar dip appeared, so
we weren’t left hungry! a glass of fabulous full-
bodied white from the well-chosen Italian and
sicilian wine list set our meal off nicely.
the lasagne came with a crisp mozzarella top-
ping, sealing in thin layers of ragu and bechamel
sauce which created a subtle creamy taste -
simply delicious. the conchiglie, served in true al
dente fashion, arrived coated in an insanely ad-
dictive saffron cream sauce. this was a delight.
When asked what the secret narcotic ingredient
was, Davide laconically replied ’Love. Just love.’
No arguments from us as the last of the focac-
cia scooped up every tiny bit of sauce from our
respective dishes!
If you order no other side dish, then the parmi-
giana is a must. thin slices of aubergine were
cooked to perfection in a cheese and tomato
sauce with a slight crunch on the skin whilst the
flesh melted on the tongue. Absolute yum!
my only grumble was that the cheese sprinkled
on the sautéed spinach clashed with my lasagne
– which says more about my ordering skill than
the dishes!
This is a great little find and perfect for couples
– though you may need to book in advance
to eat in as word continues to spread. highly
recommended!
2 mains, 2 sides and 2 medium wines: £37.50.

the only cinema left in
streatham is the Odeon.
It opened in 1930 as the
Astoria, seating 2,576 and
lavishly decorated in the style
of an egyptian temple. the
stage was larger than many
West end theatres and there
was a large Compton organ.
many famous orchestras
and big bands played there
including Billy Cotton and his
Band.
Odeon took over the astoria
in 1939. It reopened in
1961 after modernisation as
“South London’s first Luxury
theatre”. the royal Festival
Ballet performed there in
1968 and 1969. So did The
Four tops, stevie Wonder
and the supremes! Ian Dury
and the Blockheads as the
last live show in December
1978. In 1991 the cinema was
reorganised to 5 screens and
1,955 seats and again in 2001
to 8 screens and 1,487 seats.
the wonderful art Deco Grade
II listed former ABC cinema
opened in 1938 as the Regal
with almost 2000 seats. From
1960 it was known as the ABC,
and in 1977 converted into
a triple screen cinema. the
cinema closed in December
2000 and the auditorium was
demolished to make way for
the current flats, while the
listed façade and foyer is now
a flooring showroom.
the art Deco Gaumont
Palace in streatham hill
opened in 1932. It had an
open-air terrace where teas
were served, and a marble
entrance hall reputed to be
a copy of stockholm town
hall. Following bomb damage
in 1944 it reopened as the
Gaumont in 1955, then 1961
became the megabowl.
millicent martin, Bruce Forsyth,
sir richard attenborough were
among the celebs. attending
its opening. Princes harry and

“Zap Zone” there in October
1992.
It was demolished in 2014
to make way for Gaumont

retained and the original tiles
re-exposed.
The Golden Domes Picture
Theatre opened in 1912 and
had a vestibule containing a
fountain with coloured lights. It
closed on 12 November 1938.
Now the domes have gone,
and the site is a Carpetright.
The Empire Picture Theatre
opened in 1910 and closed in
May 1932 due to competition
from larger super-cinemas.
During WW2 it was used as a

was hit by a V1 flying bomb
on 17 June 1944. Today the
hideaway Jazz Club occupies
the site.

there’s a wonderful initiative
from seven churches in
streatham and mitcham to
provide a secure and warm
place to sleep for homeless
men over the winter, 2nd Jan-
30th March. Night Light is one
of over 140 similar schemes
in the country supported by
housing Justice.
The shelter has 15 vetted,
regular guests, who are all
street sleepers living in tents
on streatham and mitcham
Commons. One man came to
Night Light with a bandaged
arm after having been bitten
by a dog, and another with
a broken leg having been
hit by a car (he was taken to
hospital). One man had lost
his accommodation due to
not having a permanent job
and steady income, whilst
a couple of others leave the
shelter after the meal to go to
work or they could come late
from work with their meal kept
aside. Night shelter wants to
be understanding and support
their wellbeing where possible.
at the heart of the shelter is
a hot meal where guests and
volunteers eat together as one
big family. many volunteers
are from the community, and
not all are Christians. “People
respect faith when they see the
difference it makes, so we want
our faith in Jesus to be seen
by our actions” commented
simi solomon of Love
streatham, the community of
local churches. “the men are
so thankful and show their
appreciation every day by being
respectful, helping to set-up
beds, clear up after breakfast
and follow lights-out rules.”

15. It’s that time of year where all the weird and wonderful diets
come out of the woodwork: teas claiming to help you lose
weight rapidly; brutal gym routines which will have you
bikini body ready and metabolism boosters allowing you to
keep eating whilst the weight magically disappears. But with
research showing that 80% of individuals who lose weight
will regain that weight within 5 years, is it time we did things
a little differently?
Following a diet involves following a certain set of rules,
such as counting points or calories. These rules are used to
help us decide how much to eat every day and often result in
us eating more or less than we need.
At the end of the day you may have reached your calorie limit
but feel starved. You’re either going to bed hungry or honor
your hunger, eat more and spend the evening beating yourself
up - neither of these are great options. Or perhaps you get to
the end of the day, have calories left but aren’t hungry
- what are the chances you’re going to let those calories go to
waste?
Society has programmed us to believe that in order to
successfully lose weight we must experience extreme hunger,
work incredibly hard at the gym and avoid ‘bad’ foods, eating
only ‘healthy’ and ‘clean’ foods.
There is a much better way to go about improving your
health, it’s called ‘Intuitive Eating’. Intuitive Eating is not a
weight loss diet, it is a set of tools and skills to help you learn
to eat according to your body’s natural appetite and
physiological cues to develop healthy habits for life.
Ditch the diet, embrace
intuitive eating
by Jodie Relf (Registered Dietitian)
Whilst the thought of trusting your body
to tell you what to eat and when to stop
eating can feel very daunting, research
has shown that adopting an intuitive
eating approach results in decreased
cholesterol, decreased blood pressure,
increased physical activity, improved
eating behaviours and self-esteem and
finally, increased weight loss.

18. At a time where high streets are facing their biggest challenges, InStreatham is working hard to
prove that even the smallest changes can make all the difference. Here we meet the businesses
taking ownership of their high street survival. Working closely with six business owners along
the old Bedford Row, Our business development guru, Wendy Jackson of Scope for More, has
helped them to view their premises through the eye of potential new customers. This pilot project

Chasing silverware
streatham are top of the National Ice hockey
League south and in a strong position to bring
silverware back to SW16 for the first time since
1982.
they enter February four points clear of solent
Devils and Chelmsford Chieftains and are set
for a tricky month of fixtures including the NIHL
south Cup Final on sunday 16th February.
Big crowds have packed streatham arena
recently, most noticeably in the 12-0 defeat of
Cardiff Fire. the team have lost just once all
season, while scoring 144 goals and conceding
just 33 in 21 games. They are the highest
scorers in the league and have conceded less
than anyone else too.
“the pressure is on the team to end the trophy
drought.” said coach adam Carr. “Invicta
Dynamos will be a tough test in the Cup Final
and we’ve got tricky league fixtures along the
way too. skating out to a full arena just adds to
the atmosphere at the games and I don’t think
many people go away after a game feeling it
wasn’t a worthwhile trip. after games I can feel
the buzz in the area and fans new and old are
really enjoying the run of form we are on”

We were very sorry to hear that the founding
partner of Anthony Gold, passed away on 8th
January 2020. Tony Gold was born on 13
January 1934 in South London. He attended
City of London School as a scholarship boy
and subsequently read Law at King’s College,
London. He was articled in the City qualifying as
a solicitor and, in 1963, set up his own practice,
initially on Ludgate Hill and subsequently in
Streatham.
In 1974 Howard Lerman joined him and the
firm continued to grow. Tony’s personal legal
practice was wide ranging, but his first love was
civil litigation and he developed an enviable
reputation as a no-nonsense litigator, working
with top barristers’ chambers in a variety of
complex cases. He had a strong commitment to
access to justice, taking many cases on Legal
Aid.
In 1987 the firm opened a central London office
which has subsequently grown to more than 100
people, while it retains an office in Streatham.
After his retirement as a partner Tony continued
to work as a consultant, and was always very
proud of the firm, which now has 30 partners
and 150 staff.
Tony is survived by his wife, Joan, children
Debra and Jonathan, and grand-children
Rebecca, Daniel, Louise and Sam. Our deepest
condolences to them and to his friends and
colleagues.
