NEWBERRY UNVEILS NEW HEALTH SCIENCE MAJOR
NEWBERRY, S.C. (Nov.12, 2018) – Newberry College’s new Health Science major will offer a
broad curriculum in how science and medicine impact global issues in health and wellness. The
major is designed for students who are interested in the healthcare field, but do not require a
specialized major for their program. The major is also structured so students who complete the
program will also meet prerequisites needed for entry into most Allied Health Programs.
The Health Science major will consist of 3 Public Health and Wellness courses, 2 Introductory
Science Courses, 2 Human Body Science, two Mathematics, 1 Experiential Learning course such
as a research position or an internship, a junior and senior capstone experience, and 25 credit
hours in Health Science electives selected by the student.
“This major gives students the opportunity to explore all sides of the Health Science field
through freedom and flexibility,” says Bret Clark, Department Chair of Science and
Mathematics. “The curriculum doesn’t lock the student in, but instead lets them experiment
with aspects of their future careers and further education to see examine their strengths and
weaknesses as well as likes and dislikes.”
Students have the opportunity to take their experience to the workforce immediately after
earning their degree, or have a tremendous foundation to build upon with advanced degree
programs. Some of the careers included in the array of post-graduation options include
Physician’s Assistants, Social Workers, Exercise Physiologists, Chiropractors, Dental Hygienists,
Radiologists, and many more.
“This new major helps fill in a much needed space for students who want to learn the ins and
outs of Health Science before deciding on a specific career choice,” says Interim Acadmic Dean,
Sid Parrish. “There are so many options graduates of this program will have. The experience
students can learn through this major is diverse and applicable to so many different positions.”
