Growing up in New Mexico we also use green chile as a method to promote health and also use

Public Health England (PHE) currently have three national cancer screening programs. Bowel
screening (PHE, 2015a), breast screening (PHE, 2015b) and cervical screening (PHE, 2015c).
However, there is a low uptake of these services from people with learning disabilities (Emerson &
Baines, 2010). Joel & Marcellino (2016) research, highlights that people with a learning disability
face barriers at cancer screening, at both a national and a local level. Nationally, there is no flagging
systems to identify if a person had a learning disability before sending out invitations to screenings.
Inclusion may be improved if information was sent in an accessible format to those who require it.
At a local level, General Practitioners have no obligation to include cancer screening in the annual
health checks, although early detection and treatment could improve outcomes, while potentially
saving money (Royal College of General Practitioners, 2012).
Read et al. (2010) discusses obstacles faced by people with a learning disability when receiving a
Fecal Occult blood test. It was observed that the test wording was to scientific with limited support
to complete the test. Other barriers include, a lack of opportunities to discuss bowel cancer and a
lack of staff training in the subject.

body systems. The mouth may be the most colonized area of the body. With good oral health
detrimental effects do not normally occur, but many Americans do not have good oral health.

There is a wide spectrum of perspectives on the definition of both health and health promotion. I
have determined that there is no "correct" way to describe these concepts, but multiple
conceptualizations of each. An individual's health status can be determined using a wide variety of
factors, and there are several different methods of promoting health. This paper aims to identify the
concepts that I believe define health and health promotion most accurately, based on my personal
opinions and experiences.
In my opinion, health is all encompassing, meaning that it is not merely defined by the absence of
disease, but rather it is a combination of factors that contribute to a sense of well–being. Doctor
Margaret Newman's wellness–illness continuum (2003) defines health on a spectrum, with wellness
at one end and illness at the other. This concept is one–dimensional and views health negatively,
such that if an individual isn't well, they are ill (Hall, Perry, Potter & Stockert, 2014). Viewing
health positively encompasses physical, psychological, social and environmental factors. From this
perspective, an individual can be chronically ill, but still achieve wellness if they are living a
meaningful life (Hall et al., 2014). To integrate all of these factors, the wellness–illness spectrum
incorporates the concept of high level wellness. High level wellness involves an assessment of an
individual's ability to achieve wellness based on their environment, as well as their health

Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change are the three models I chose to discuss. An electronic
database searched was completed. Three articles were chosen to summarize and discuss each of the
above models. Social Cognitive Theory The article by Son et al. (2011) studies the effect of social
cognitive factors among middle–aged and older adults' leisure–time physical activity (LTPA)
participation. The social cognitive factors are the outcome expectations, constraints, exercise
identity, and self–regulation. The result was extracted and analyzed using a 271 survey responses.
The study revealed the social cognitive factors are important in understanding LTPA and have
implications for LTPA programs for middle–aged to older adults. Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)
assumes personal, social, and environmental factors interact with each other (Pender et al., 2014, p.
32). The interaction forms behaviors and beliefs. The study applied SCT concepts to understanding
the behaviors and beliefs that influence the middle–aged to older adults LTPA participation. The

Health Promotion Concept
The first thing that comes to my mind when i think of business with humanity in mind is the concept
of disease prevention and health promotion. I strongly believe that we have to collectively direct a
larger chunk of our resources to prioritize disease prevention and health promotion over chronic
disease management.
Right from early childhood I have always been fascinated by the simple yet highly effective concept

However, this vision of mine drastically changed during my third year of medical school. I was
exposed to public health and Preventive Medicine. Everything suddenly made sense, I realized that
instead of treating one patient at a time i can actually use my skills and knowledge to prevent
diseases and promote a healthy lifestyle.
During my public health training, I realized that unhealthy lifestyle choices such as inadequate
physical inactivity, poor nutrition and substance abuse were responsible for the majority of our
chronic health problems. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are
responsible for 7 of every 10 deaths among Americans each year and account for 75% of the nation's
health spending. It became clear that disease prevention is key to improving America's health and to
keep rising health costs under control.
I completed my residency training in occupational medicine and board certification in preventive
medicine. I realized that one of the best ways to achieve this goal is to extensively study employer
based health & wellness programs. Interest in employee health and wellness is gradually increasing
with more and more employers joining the bandwagon. Early research has shown that workplace
health promotion and wellness programs decrease long term health costs, reduce lost workdays,
increase productivity and significantly decrease worker's compensation

Health promotion consists of three levels, primary, secondary and tertiary. Although all are levels of
health promotion they differ depending on the extent of illness. The first level is the primary level.
This level involves people who are still healthy. At this level the susceptibility of contacting disease
is reduced through nutritional encouragement, hydration, exercise, and immunizations. Primary
level is designed to keep the healthy free from disease.
The next level is the secondary level, where the healthy are not so healthy and requires a little more
aggressive measures. This level includes people from early stages of disease to seriously ill. People
at this level may need medication intervention and even minor surgical interventions to return to or
maintain a healthy state. This level may require the nurse to provide a more aggressive approach
with education and health promotion.
The last level is the tertiary. When a person reaches this level they are considered critical. There is a
major cause of concern due to the person's poor health. Whether their illness is chronic or
transmissible the concern remains the same. These people may have a lack of education of their
disease. The infected person needs to know if their disease is contagious and what are the steps
needed to prevent transmission of the disease. If the illness is chronic the person needs education on
