Hawthorne is a genus of trees or shrubs that have scaly bark, armed twigs, and simple, alternate leaves. They produce white to red clustered flowers. Hawthorne forms thickets that provide excellent cover and habitat for birds and small mammals, and the species is abundant in thickets in northeastern Oregon, often growing with chokecherry, alders, and willows. It is also commonly planted as an ornamental.
