FAO estimates: 7.3 million tonnes of fish is discarded every year
• Nearly 20 percent of shark species are threatened with extinction, primarily as a result of being caught accidentally on longlines. Bycatch also includes young fish that could rebuild populations if they were allowed to grow and breed.
Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, seabirds and marine mammals, including whales, dolphins and porpoises, die as bycatch. As many as 200,000 loggerhead sea turtles and 50,000 leatherback sea turtles are caught annually. Longline fishing also kills hundreds of thousands of seabirds when they become entangled in drift nets or caught on longline hooks when they dive for bait.

- Square mesh codends can help reduce bycatch compared to traditional diamond mesh codends. Square mesh retains its shape as the codend fills, leaving openings for small fish to escape. Studies show square mesh codends of 55-60mm reduced bycatch by 22-33% and juveniles by up to 95% compared to 100mm diamond mesh.

There are increasing opportunities to expand observation of ocean biology from advances in individual sensors to development of national and global networks. To leverage these opportunities, the ocean community has defined essential variables, initially in physical oceanography. In 2013, a Biological Integration and Observation Task Team (BIO-TT) was formed under the IOOC to focus on biological essential variables for U.S. IOOS. The primary goals of the BIO-TT were a) to improve availability of observations on the existing IOOS core biological variables (defined by BIO-TT as phytoplankton species; zooplankton species and abundance; fish species and abundance), and b) to identify and prioritize additional cross-cutting federal agency biological and ecosystem observation needs.
To address these objectives the team (1) completed a survey of federal agencies for existing core variable datasets and identified needs for biological and ecosystem observations and (2) conducted an expert workshop to explore best available science of biological and ecosystem observing, and determine implementation strategies for biological and ecosystem observation needs identified from the survey. To build upon the actions and recommendations made previously by several other groups working towards the development of a global, coordinated ocean observation system, the BIO-TT Expert Working Group activities followed the guidelines developed by the Framework for Ocean Observation (2012) and the prioritization themes identified by the GOOS Biology and Ecosystems Panel (IOC 2014).
Workshop participants agreed that the highest priority is to include species and abundance of core functional groups (pelagic and benthic) not currently represented among the IOOS core variables. This presentation will summarize key results from the survey and then focus on analyses, outcomes and recommendations from the expert workshop for new and enhanced biological variables as part of IOOS.MARINE PROTECTED AREA

However, overfishing remains a major threat, and without further regulation of fishing industries fisheries could collapse by 2048.
Marine protected areas
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are areas of the marine environment that are protected by law from certain human impacts to conserve natural and cultural resources. While often thought of as completely closed off to humans, many allow some human uses. MPAs help protect ecosystems and habitats from overfishing and other threats, maintaining biodiversity and ensuring resources are available for future generations. Studies show MPAs can help replenish fish populations in surrounding areas. The Marine Protected Areas Fund supports coordination and stewardship among members of the National System of Marine Protected Areas. There are over 1,500 MPAs established across the U.S., with the majority allowing some access and uses while providing permanent protection.

There are increasing opportunities to expand observation of ocean biology from advances in individual sensors to development of national and global networks. To leverage these opportunities, the ocean community has defined essential variables, initially in physical oceanography. In 2013, a Biological Integration and Observation Task Team (BIO-TT) was formed under the IOOC to focus on biological essential variables for U.S. IOOS. The primary goals of the BIO-TT were a) to improve availability of observations on the existing IOOS core biological variables (defined by BIO-TT as phytoplankton species; zooplankton species and abundance; fish species and abundance), and b) to identify and prioritize additional cross-cutting federal agency biological and ecosystem observation needs.
To address these objectives the team (1) completed a survey of federal agencies for existing core variable datasets and identified needs for biological and ecosystem observations and (2) conducted an expert workshop to explore best available science of biological and ecosystem observing, and determine implementation strategies for biological and ecosystem observation needs identified from the survey. To build upon the actions and recommendations made previously by several other groups working towards the development of a global, coordinated ocean observation system, the BIO-TT Expert Working Group activities followed the guidelines developed by the Framework for Ocean Observation (2012) and the prioritization themes identified by the GOOS Biology and Ecosystems Panel (IOC 2014).
Workshop participants agreed that the highest priority is to include species and abundance of core functional groups (pelagic and benthic) not currently represented among the IOOS core variables. This presentation will summarize key results from the survey and then focus on analyses, outcomes and recommendations from the expert workshop for new and enhanced biological variables as part of IOOS.MARINE PROTECTED AREA

Half of marine fisheries are now fully exploited or over-exploited, threatening this important food source. Solutions include designating protected fishing areas to allow fish populations to recover, and expanding sustainable aquaculture. However, overfishing remains a major threat, and without further regulation of fishing industries fisheries could collapse by 2048.
Marine protected areas
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are areas of the marine environment that are protected by law from certain human impacts to conserve natural and cultural resources. While often thought of as completely closed off to humans, many allow some human uses. MPAs help protect ecosystems and habitats from overfishing and other threats, maintaining biodiversity and ensuring resources are available for future generations. Studies show MPAs can help replenish fish populations in surrounding areas. The Marine Protected Areas Fund supports coordination and stewardship among members of the National System of Marine Protected Areas. There are over 1,500 MPAs established across the U.S., with the majority allowing some access and uses while providing permanent protection.

Sustainable seafood campaign

Ecologically healthy marine waters are a valuable natural resource. They support a rich and diverse range of ecosystems, habitats and species, and they are also a source of food – from wild fisheries and aquaculture. They are also important for recreational activities and tourism.
Transitional and coastal waters are assessed under the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). Having coordinated frameworks for water quality for all the water bodies in Ireland, and across Europe, allows us to compare our results with other countries. It allows us to see what works to help us make sure all our water bodies achieve at least ‘good’ status, and no deterioration occurs.

It was concluded that mussel culture promotes nature conservation.
Given the expected global population increase by 50 % in 2050, there is a strong need for improved food supply. Farming the ocean is a likely option. Aquaculture low in the food chain, without the provision of formulated feed, ie shellfish and seaweed should offer solutions. Given actual production trends in Europe, showing a decrease rather than a production increase, there is a clear need for an innovation agenda for all parties involved: producers, processors, governments, and stakeholders.

International agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity have established targets and indicators to monitor biodiversity loss and guide conservation efforts, but global and EU targets to reduce biodiversity loss by 2010 were not met. Ongoing work includes identifying ecologically and biologically significant areas for enhanced protection and monitoring trends in species distributions and abundances to inform policymaking.

NSB-konsernet står midt i en stor endringsprosess. De vil at enda flere skal reise kollektivt, og tar i bruk tre virkemidler for å få til dette: transport fra dør til dør, et smart kjøp, og et godt kundemøte. Dette lykkes de ikke med alene, men krever godt samspill med både offentlige aktører og gründervirksomheter med morgendagens innovative, kreative løsninger på transportutfordringene. De skal dele et par konkrete eksempler på innovative forretningsmodeller som er skapt i samspill med flinke gründerbedrifter, og som forhåpentligvis kan få enda flere til å reise kollektivt i fremtiden.
Kristian Kolind er direktør for mobilitetstjenester i NSB-konsernet, der han jobber med å realisere nye mobilitetskonsepter som f.eks. delebiler og selvkjørende busser. Over nyttår vil sanntidsprising av strøm bli innført i Norge og da vil produktet bli enda mer relevant. Jarle Lysberg er styreleder i selskapet og vil fortelle om selskapet og videreutviklingen av produktet, samt den pågående emisjonen som nå foregår på dealflow.no.

Per Arve Frøyen - Teamleder gründer @ Innovasjon Norge Vestland
Per Arve vil gi en innføring i hvordan Innovasjon Norge jobber med gründere. Mange tenker at finansiering er det viktigste i selskapets tidligste fase, men det kan ofte være lurt å tenke nettverk og kompetanse først. «Det er ofte et godt tegn når gründere ber om mentor før de søker finansiering», sier Per Arve. Innovasjon Norge har nettopp gjennomført en ekstern evaluering av mentorprogrammet, og vil presentere rykende fersk innsikt om dette viktige programmet.
Per Arve er teamleder gründer i Innovasjon Norge Vestland, og har jobbet med oppstartsbedrifter i Innovasjon Norge i 9 år. Før det var han i ulike stillinger nasjonalt og internasjonalt innen blant annet sjømat og retail. Han har en bachelor fra University of Texas at Austin, samt en MBA fra Darden School of Business, University of Virginia.

Hilde Støle Pettersen - Partner @ Momentum Partners
Hilde vil gi en innføring i hvordan Momentum tenker når de vurderer selskaper til sin portefølje, og vise et rammeverk som publikum kan velge å bruke i sin egen vurdering av deltakerne i dagens pitche-konkurranse. Det finnes dessverre ingen fasit på hvilke selskaper som vil lykkes, men det har likevel en verdi å gå systematisk og analytisk til verks i vurderingene. Samtidig vil det komme frem at det viktigste (og vanskeligste) å vurdere er ting som ikke så lett lar seg måle i trafikklys eller tall.
Hilde er partner i investeringsselskapet Momentum, som fokuserer på fasene såkorn og tidlig venture. Momentum er en aktiv eier og Hilde har styreverv i flere av porteføljeselskapene. Der bistår hun med bl.a. i strategiske valg, med forretningsutvikling, finansiering, forhandlingsstøtte og økonomistyring. Før Momentum kom Hilde fra The Boston Consulting Group der hun primært jobbet med strategi, organisasjonsutvikling og lønnsomhetsforbedring i en rekke bransjer, alt fra IT og media til matvareproduksjon og humanitære organisasjoner. Hilde har en mastergrad i finans fra NHH og en bachelorgrad i økonomi og administrasjon fra Université de Toulouse 1 i Frankrike.

Fikse huskjøpsprosessen: Finn smarte måter å løse den universelle hodepinen med å kjøpe et hjem og alle smertene som følger
Selve kvelden starter med en presentasjon fra Chaudhuri Saurav og Paul Bowman om Market Gravity. Etter dette hopper vi rett på presentasjoner fra de 4 gruppene som viser deres løsning på Born in Bergen. I pausen får dere sjansen til å mingle og snakke med gruppene om presentasjonene.
