Hasmukh Patel was an influential Indian architect born in 1933 who made significant contributions to contemporary Indian architecture over four decades. He founded HCP Design, Planning & Management Pvt. Ltd. in Ahmedabad and helped establish the School of Architecture at CEPT University. Some of Patel's most notable works include Newman Hall (1963), the Observatory Tower for Gujarat Solar Park (2015), and the Dena Bank in Ahmedabad (1974-1976). Patel received several awards over his career for his contributions to the architectural profession in India.

5. Hasmukh Patel’s design philosophy is rooted in the belief that design is the secret
for elegant and sustainable solutions to practical problems.

While focussing on clients’ objectives, He also queries them to correctly formulate
the range of diverse problems that any project poses. It then provides leadership to a
collaborative design process.
He believes that design and building projects require both, a rich collaboration
amongst many ( design, construction and management professionals & workers)
& an effective leadership that canprovide a vision for that collaboration.

10. Newman Hall is one of the salient examples defining the modern architectural idiom
in post independent India.
This hostel building was designed by architect Hashmukh C Patel and the structural
details were supervised by Dr Mahendra Mehta and Brother Martin. The hostel’s
structural system is closely integrated with the design aspects. It comprises of
architectural details and elements which were achieved through various innovative
construction techniques and experiments that were challenging and new during its
time of construction. These attributes contribute to the scientific value of the building.
Even after five decades of its construction, the building still holds its structural
integrity thus imparting the aesthetic and historic value of the building. Thus the
above values contribute in determining the significance of the building.

11. What distinguishes the building is the simple
and restrained use of exposed brick and concrete
work and the ingenuity with which the problems
of climate have been resolved. A series of brick
piers flanking external windows and internal
corridors, with supporting concrete slabs at lintel
level dominate the external structures. These
provide the necessary protection from the sun
and rain, while their clear separation from the
main facade and vertical extension above roof
level add drama to the elevation.

12. 1. NEWMAN HALL
The Newman Hall is a commune designed by HCP for the
Society of Jesus. The straight forward and simple form of
this hostel reflects the austere and disciplined life of the
Jesuit seminarians. The requirement was for a series of
individual rooms, a dining hall, a chapel and a small
office block

13. 2. OBSERVATORY TOWER FOR GUJARAT
SOLAR PARK, CHARANKA
Charanka Solar Park being built on a 2,000 hectare plot of
land near Charanka village in Patan, has put Gujarat on
the map, in the field of solar power generation, generating
500 MW of solar power. The park is the first of its kind in
the world, being the largest, multi-developer, multi-facility
and multi-beneficiary solar park. A 7 storey high
observatory tower was proposed in order to overlook the solar
fields. The challenge was to construct the tower in a short
span of four months. This was achieved by using;
Modular Galvanized Steel Structure Construction.

Apart from the construction of the Observatory Tower, HCP is involved in the project
management of the entire Solar Park which includes construction of the canal, the 1
MW solar plant owned by GPCL.
