Hannah learned several things about earthquake prediction through this project. First, nearby earthquakes can influence the timing of future quakes in an area. Second, the magnitude of earthquakes follows patterns that can aid prediction, as larger quakes are usually preceded by smaller ones. Lastly, major earthquakes can have widespread economic and social impacts around the world. Factors like a location's proximity to tectonic plate boundaries and fault lines determine earthquake risk, as the shaking is strongest closest to where the plates interact. Some of the regions with the largest quakes historically are Chile, Japan, California, China, Turkey, Italy, Africa, Australia, Texas, and Alaska due to their positions on plate boundaries or fault systems.
