Handel was a German-born British Baroque composer known for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. He was strongly influenced by Italian Baroque composers and German choral traditions. After studying law, he took positions playing violin and harpsichord for operas in Hamburg. In 1712, he settled in London and became a British subject in 1727. In 1750, Handel was seriously injured in a carriage accident which weakened his eyesight. He died in 1759 at age 74 after attending his last performance of Messiah. His funeral was given full state honors and attended by over 3,000 mourners.
