The 2010 Haiti earthquake occurred on January 12th near the capital city of Port-au-Prince, killing over 316,000 people and injuring 350,000 others. Over 1.5 million people were left homeless due to the effects of the 7.0 magnitude quake and 52 aftershocks that caused soil movement and ruptured tectonic plates. In addition to the massive loss of life, a localized tsunami swept three people out to sea and infrastructure was severely damaged across much of the region.
