To raise the profile of digital
marketing within the Manufacturing
and engineering sector, a sector that
does not always see the importance
of this rapidly increasing marketing
channel, Katapult, a digital marketing
agency, compiled the Manufacturing
and engineering edition of the
Midlands Marketing Index.
The report looked at our online
presence and took into account many
factors including responsiveness of
website, content, digital tools,
videos, social media, blogs, search
engine optimisation (seO) and lead
generation performance.
Over the last few years, Baxi's
marketing strategy has shifted
significantly towards digital
marketing, based on extensive
insight into customer needs and the
customer journey.
Our website has been developed to
offer the best possible experience
across devices, and over the last
couple of years have put in a huge
amount of work developing content
for the website, including helpful
tools and
videos to
support our
visitors. This
effort has really
paid off and we
have seen significant
year on year increases in website
traffic, engagement and conversions.
For Baxi this is just the start of a
really exciting journey where digital
will continue to be a major focus for
us in 2016 and beyond.
Thank you and well done to
everyone for your hard work and
dedication, which is obviously now
making a significant impact in the
market place.

David pinder, CeO for Baxi uK and Ireland,
comments: "We are proud to have been

Are we Work Fit?
Managers at Warwick were
impressed by the practicality and
realism of the WorkFit
programme, a tailored service
offered by the Downe’s Syndrome
Association, dedicated to making
employers aware of the learning
profile of people with DS.
The programme provides structured,
cohesive support for both employer and prospective employees,
based on achieving a clear progression towards encouraging people
with Ds to realise their employment goals.
The WorkFit initiative is in perfect tune with our CsR aspiration to
seek to have as meaningful as possible involvement in our local
community and Warwick managers gave their full support to
exploring the possibility of placements being offered to Ds
candidates. An initial meeting was held with the Association’s
employment Development Manager, which was filmed by the BBC for
a documentary. Discussions are continuing and information about the
outcome, and any resulting documentary, will be contained in a
future Issue. In the meantime, we can all be proud of yet another
shining example of how our Baxi values can be, and are being,
realised in meaningful action.
gAS SAFeTy WeeK
Baxi is fully committed to supporting
the annual Gas Safety Week, which
raises awareness of gas safety in the
UK's 23 million gas fuelled homes.
This year Baxi launched a social media
search for a Gas safe hero, inviting gas
safe engineers to post examples of
where they have made a dangerous gas
situation safe. The winner received £150
worth of vouchers, whilst on each day of
Gas safety Week a selected twitter
follower received a carbon monoxide
alarm.
paul hardy,
managing
director at Baxi,
commented:
“Gas safety is a
huge issue for
both the
industry and consumers. Our Gas safe
hero campaign championed engineers up
and down the country, while our
giveaway of carbon monoxide detectors
helped hammer home the dangers of
unsafe gas appliances.”

Twin targets
Main Heating chose PHEX
Manchester and PHEX Chelsea,
two major events, to display
their defining commitment to innovation, technology and excellence.
These regional exhibitions give manufacturers, suppliers and distributors the
opportunity to meet existing and potential customers under one roof on their
own turf (or within easy reach of their base). The Independents sales teams
will be talking about training and the Works loyalty scheme and showcasing
the Main eco elite Combi boiler and the Main heating unvented Cylinder.
Baxi on

The Baxi Make it Easy offer
was an eye-catching part of
the Heating & Renewables
Roadshow when it visited five
regional venues in September.
This annual event, designed to give
industry professionals the
opportunity to ‘educate,
communicate and collaborate’ lived
up to its billing in prestigious
locations in Coventry, exeter,
Farnborough, edinburgh and
Manchester.
Baxi was delighted to be
shortlisted for Innovation of the

held the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
CIphe awards
ceremony
Heatrae Sadia
recently hosted the
Student Awards for
the Norfolk branch of
CIPHE (Chartered
Institute of Plumbing
& Heating Engineers).
Attended by local college students and branch
members, the evening featured a presentation,
given by Jon Cockburn, head of Marketing, on what
heatrae sadia is doing with regards to the new
erp legislation, as well as a factory tour, a buffet
and the awards presentations.
The three best performing students, emma Taylor,
simon Ashley and Jordan Gracia (pictured),
received their awards from the CIphe uK
president, Terry stephenson, who was performing
his first official duty in his new role.
This was the first time the university had taken
part, and the competition was fierce.
The design brief was to create a device that
would be mobile, powered by a 6v motor, with the
ability to both climb and descend, and able to
support an overall weight of 650g when at the top
of the climb. Chris and his colleagues designed a
device that completed its complex task in 5.5
seconds, earning them second place in local heats,
and qualifying them to compete in a regional final
against other North West universities. Chris
recalls: “On the day of the competition our device
proved to be the best, beating entries from other
universities such as lancaster, Manchester and
liverpool, as well
as from the uClan
team that edged
us out in the
heats. We are now
off to IMeche headquarters in london in October,
to represent the North West universities in the
national finals.”
Whilst this was going on, Chris achieved excellent
grades in the first stage of his Degree I, and
has been awarded Best performing student in
stage one of the Beng Mechanical engineering
Degree. “Congratulations, Chris”, does not sound
nearly enough!
Climbing the heights
During the course of the year at the University of Central
Lancashire (UCLan), Chris Commins, Trainee Product Design
Engineer, Preston, was asked, with others, to design and develop
a device to compete in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
(IMechE) 2015 Design Challenge.
Warwick Food and Film Festival
As part of supporting the Warwick Rocks project
throughout 2015, Baxi helped sponsor the Food
and Film Festival, held over the August bank
holiday weekend.
Main attractions were a streetfood line-up from
some of the nation’s top streetfood providers, with
four classic films. In order of appearance, these
were Back to the Future, Toy story, Jurassic park
and Raiders of the lost Ark, providing laughs, thrills
and spills of a family-friendly variety. The event
organisers expressed a special thank you to Baxi
for their additional support for the events in 2015.
Baxi supports ‘Town’
Stratford Town FC has been an important part
of the Stratford community for over 60 years,
and in recent years has played with
distinction in the Southern Football League,
last season gaining promotion to the Premier Division.
Baxi is pleased to be associated with the continuing development of ‘Town’,
and during the coming season our name will be carried on the 1st Team’s
home and away shirts, display boards at the DCs stadium and on match
programmes and the Club’s website.
Baxi at the races! When Baxi was offered the chance to sponsor
a race at the Brighton Festival of Racing, it
was odds on that it would accept.
A field of eight competed in the Baxi Boilers
handicap stakes on Friday 7th August. With the
going good to firm, star Asset, the three year old
4/6 favorite, ran true to form over the seven furlongs, hitting the front in the
final furlong to come home by three lengths.
Park House Rugby Club
in Bromley is a go-ahead
club, with a very active
junior section. The club’s ambition is epitomised by tours it
arranges for the Under 15’s team and Baxi is pleased to show its
support by providing shirts for tour matches.

>>CanDo Focus on Customer Support
The conference sessions, based on
the principles of The Art of Brilliance,
focused on the importance of
training, team work, feedback and
sharing a vision of attaining our
business strategy by concentrating
on demand creation rather than sales
push. Andy Whittaker, the inspiration
behind the Art of Brilliance,
highlighted the importance of
change and how a 1% improvement
can make all the difference.
The transition from Great to Brilliant
had already begun, and the
conference identified milestones on
the road-map towards the ultimate
goal.
Feedback showed that customer
satisfaction is improving but there is
a need to define what Brilliant looks
like for our customers, and how to
achieve lifetime loyalty. This loyalty
is not just about the products we
sell, as the quality of our pre- and
post-sales services plays an
important part in providing
a customer experience that will
encourage them to recommend Baxi.
Brilliant companies need good ideas
and everyone has something to
offer in the drive to develop
innovation. The idea sharing theme
was a constant throughout the
conference’s activities, including the
wide ranging breakout sessions, the
Graffiti Wall (which certainly did
attract some thought provoking
comments!) and the final reminder
to delegates to provide feedback to
the conference survey. All feedback
will be used in the planning of the
2016 Brilliant event.
Great work by individuals is being
highlighted through the Beyond
the Call of Duty scheme, which
gives everyone the opportunity to
nominate colleagues for meaningful
recognition. A number of industry
and more general awards are being
entered to showcase the great work
that is being done thoughout Baxi
Customer support. All award
winners will be decided later in the
year. The impressive support given
to Marie Curie, ourchosen charity, has
already achieved the status of
Brilliant and reflects admirable
commitment to our business values.
To conclude what had been a
highly successful conference,
delegates were strongly motivated
to aim high, work hard and succeed
together in creating something truly
Brilliant at Baxi Customer support.
Hosted by Lee Robinson, UK Customer Services Director, the Baxi
Customer Support Conference 2015 looked back on the inspirational
progress made since 2014 in moving the customer journey from
Good to Great, whilst looking forward to the challenge of achieving
the ultimate goal of moving from Great to Brilliant.

This new tool:
• Makes it easy for our customers to book
annual services and repairs.
• Reduces Baxi Customer support call
volumes.
• Provides commercial opportunities to sell
products and services. (Later phases)
Already in operation, the first phase provides
Baxi protection plan customers only with the
opportunity to book their service online when
they receive an annual service reminder
from Baxi via text or letter. later phases
will provide customers with the opportunity
to book a repair, and to buy a service or Baxi
protection plan online. Once customers have
booked online, they will then be able to create
an account, and view and amend existing
bookings. updates, confirmations and
reminders will also be
sent automatically.
The design of the tool is in line with the
Baxi website and based on customer journey
research. As this is a soft launch the portal will
not be promoted elsewhere until the later
phases are in place.

Introduction
Paul Rivett, MD, Heatrae Sadia, considers our progress.
The Company remains fully committed to both the
CsR and MVV programmes and recognises the need
to run both initiatives efficiently and to eliminate
duplications were they exist. Accordingly, a full review of the uK structure required to run the initiatives
has been undertaken, including dovetailing with the BDR Thermea CsR programme 'Better Together'.
We recognise that excellent work continues at the local business unit level and we want to ensure that
support structures are in place to enable this to
continue. A full announcement will be made in
due course. Throughout the pages of CanDo,
look out for highlighted items that exemplify
our values in action.

Beyond the call of duty
You are keeping the judging panels busy
considering your nominations under the Beyond
the Call of Duty scheme and up to the time we
went to press, the following colleagues were
awarded recognition for their outstanding efforts.
The Heatrae Sadia Health and Wellbeing Week was certainly fit for
purpose, as it offered employees information and challenges focused
on a healthy lifestyle.
Involvement in some options required passive participation, such as a health
check, a massage, or consuming free fruit and smoothies. Other activities
were more energetic, namely a timed cycle challenge and a table tennis
competition, whilst taking part in the exercise bike raffle involved taking a
real chance! The opportunities provided were, hopefully, of on-going benefit
to all participants. There was, however, one undoubted beneficiary, namely
Marie Curie for whom the combined efforts raised £587.
The good work was carried on by a Book and Bake sale a few weeks
later, which earned a further £75 for our chosen charity.

special mention.

Warranty Compliance
Why aren’t there any bins in the
meeting rooms?
The number of bins in the trial is
limited, but this is being addressed.
There should be at least one nearby,
outside the room.
How often will the bins be emptied?
Daily. If this is not required, at least
every two days.
Where can I put my tea bag?
In the general waste – but store them
in a cup/container to limit the number
of trips to the bins!
What if I can’t leave my desk as I
take calls?
Try taking the rubbish each time you
have a natural break.
Why isn’t there a bin closer to me?
Bin locations are being monitored. If
needed, extra bins
will be provided, but
the overall aim is to
reduce the number of bins.
We used to separate cans and
coffee cups, why can they all go in
the same one now?
Our recycling partners send mixed
recycling to an MRF (Mixed Recycling
Facility), where separation takes
place.
since June, we have recycled 450
kilograms of rubbish, which would
normally have gone to straight to
landfill. That's as much as a Grand
piano or a Grizzly bear weighs!
We have also identified a local
charity to collect our empty drinks
cans for recycling.
Warranties are designed to give total piece of mind
and protection. So it is important that customers
understand our terms and conditions, and these
have received a Crystal Mark under the Plain

unfortunately, notwithstanding our best efforts, since April this year
customer non-compliance with our warranty requirements has resulted in
the invalidation of over 50 warranty claims. We do not intend to just accept

Customer support is carrying out a review of the three key components on
which warranty compliance is based, and once this review has been
completed, improvements will be identified and incorporated into our

The 1st Solihull Scout Group is a thriving key part of its local

The complete failure of one of the boilers serving the two huts caused

Farringdon Park upgrade
The Farringdon Park Community Centre, in
Preston, has provided valuable services in one
of the most deprived areas of the UK for some
25 years.
When threatened with closure as part of local
council cuts, its residents struggled against the odds
to keep the centre open. A major issue was finding
the funds to upgrade the heating system, but Baxi
resolved this problem by donating a potterton boiler
that meets all of the requirements. Our helpful action
has been recognised by a ‘’Wow, Thank you

Kerry eight celebrate!
The 4th July is a date that’s looked forward
to by everyone in America, but it was no less
anticipated by a Baxi team of eight cyclists,
as it saw the start of the Ring of Kerry
charity cycle challenge.
The event comprises seven stages, covering
134 miles on all types of roads, and is a tough
challenge, but the Baxi team members were more
than a match for everything that the Kerry course
planners could throw at them. The team proudly
celebrated their considerable achievement, which
raised €400 for the Irish hospice Foundation and
a further €560 for Kerry Rape Crisis Centre.
Rafters raise the roof!
There was plenty to shout about when a crew of salty sea dogs from
Erdington entered the Leamington Spa Rotary Club annual raft race.
Although new to the event, they had no hesitation in taking to the water, as
this was a way of raising money to support our chosen charity. suitably
attired and equipped, Ben Reeson, paul Gussin , paul Brookes, Dan letts, ed
Jones and Jon Russell made a formidable crew, but they were glad of help
from steve Ridgway to get the raft to the start line. The going was tough and
the rain torrential but, as Ben explained, they soldiered (should that be
sailored?) on and completed the course in one hour 26 minutes, finishing a
creditable eighth out of eleven, and raising a splendid £205 for Marie Curie.
The ‘Heatrae Sadia Mountaineers’ took on the
Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in July in aid of
our charity partners.
The team, comprising steve Crabtree, Andrew harvey,
pat Mace, Kevin Mace, Mark storey and Trevor Ralph,
faced horrendous weather conditions during their 26 mile
trek to scale pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough,
the three highest peaks in yorkshire. They all covered the
full course, involving climbing a total height of 7,067 feet,
in an average time of 10 hours 12 minutes.
This exceptional achievement has so far raised over
£1350 for Marie Curie, and if anyone wishes to make a
donation, please note that http://www.justgiving.com/
Heatraesadia-Teamsponsors/ is still open for business!

Benefits round up
Rounders is the perfect
game for healthy exercise,
as it involves chucking,
whacking, running – and not
a little puffing!
Baxi Customer support
recently proved the benefits to
be gained from an evening of
rounders, when 14 players did
all of the above at Warwick park,
without suffering any injury,
whilst in the process
raising £32 for Marie Curie.
A winning score for all concerned!

Marius Dunkley, Customer Support

a hat-trick of annual challenges in
August when he hosted the Monkey

everyone was welcome to take part in a 24

did not know a sonic hedgehog from a sonic Boom, promising all comers

2,000 years ago, Hadrian’s Wall has
become one of the most iconic
monuments in our islands. To walk
the wall is a popular attraction, with
many of the walks being far from
easy. Marie Curie made available over
50 places on a particularly
challenging 10 mile hike, and nine of
our colleagues were lucky enough to
gain a place. The team duly set off to
follow in the footsteps of the
Romans and completed their hike in
an impressive five hours. Along the
way they found they were also
walking in the footsteps of Robin
hood when they visited an imposing
tree made famous in a hit movie
‘prince of Thieves’, based on his
legendary deeds.
Throughout their travels, the
fearless hikers were enveloped in a
scotch mist, but this did not spoil
their journey through the mists of
time, and there was certainly nothing
imaginary about the rock solid
£1,734.50 that they raised.
The Lake District is known for its
range of cycling options, which
attract both road cyclists and
mountain bikers, and take in country
lanes, permitted cycleways and
bridleways, whilst offering some
fantastic views. some routes are of
the monster variety, and it was one
such 54 mile long challenge that was
taken on by 16 colleagues, who
sensibly bore the name Team 54.
The team was tested to the full as
they tackled their picturesque and
challenging route through the lakes.
starting and finishing in Keswick, it
was breathtaking in every way, with
one rider admitting “It was the
hardest thing I have ever done.
If I had not been doing it for charity,
I would have rung for a car to collect
me and take me home!”
But everybody bravely battled
through and proved that they were in
the right gear, because their great
efforts on behalf of Marie Curie have
so far raised some £2,000 and
counting.
When Marie Curie throws down a challenge you are certainly not known for stepping aside, or indeed back, and this
was proved twice over on the 4th October. On that day, colleagues from Remeha Commercial and Baxi Customer
support tackled a 10 mile walk along hadrian’s Wall, whilst in the lake District, colleagues from the preston site
were cycling for 54 miles, both challenges taken on to help achieve this year’s funding target for Marie Curie.

As others
see us...!Hi, my name is Louisa and I am from
Germany. As part of my training I had the
chance to participate on an internship abroad
- at Baxi in the UK.
Although the industry
of Baxi is not a stranger
to me because of my
father’s work as sales
director at Brötje – also
part of the BDR
Thermea group – I was
curious to experience
what the workday in
england is like. When I
was informed I would be
in the marketing department I couldn't believe my
luck – perfect for my brand management studies!
From day one at Baxi everyone received me in a
very lovely way. I immediately perceived the
progressiveness of the company: the five colours
of the values which run through all areas of the
company, the simplicity of how Baxi presents
itself and the transparency towards employees
and customers – not least due to the glass fronts
of the offices!
I really enjoyed my internship and I am looking
forward to reporting to my colleagues in Germany
that you don’t go to the pub and eat scones in the
office every day, but that we can learn a lot from
your positive and lovely attitude at work and in
general.
Thank you for all the precious memories!
John gets down to basics
The Business was glad to welcome John Parker for a three
week summer placement this year when he did excellent
work on two projects.
The first was to build a new database to record all of our training
activities. Working from preston, John communicated with the head of
employee Development based in Warwick, using a range of technologies
including Face Time, video conference, and webex. They only met twice,
showing you can work with people at different locations without jumping
into a car!
John’s second project was to redesign our Course schedule and learning
and Development Directory, both of which can be viewed in the “learning
and Development” section of Ourintranet. John improved the look of both
documents and added hyperlinks allowing full access from either the contents
page or the course schedule.
Thank you John, not only for reminding us that communications can be environmentally friendly,
but also for making it easier to navigate our staff development portal.
Baxi best for Martha
Last year I completed my second year on the
BSc Retailing, Marketing and Management
Degree course at Loughborough University.
A year in industry is a mandatory part of the
degree, and I was fortunate enough to hear
about a possible placement at Baxi and was
delighted to be successful in my application.
On the assessment day I was impressed by the
importance Baxi places on its employees, and the
emphasis on investment in people has been
evident throughout the 14 months that I have
been here.
On 7th July 2014 I reported to Anna Clague, Marketing Manager for Baxi
services, who made my work experience equally as enjoyable as it was
educational. I received a very warm welcome from the Marketing department
and have learned so much from working within this supportive team. The
induction period was excellent, including visits to the factory, spending time
with salesmen, engineers, and their customers, and call centre staff which
helped me to understand how marketing relates to the business as a whole.
Throughout the year I was exposed to a variety of tasks, projects and
events and the knowledge and practical experience I have gained will be of
great benefit for my final year of studies. I now have increased determination
and confidence to pursue a career in marketing.
liam – a safe pair of hands
To help in our compliance with the provisions of the Data
Protection Act, we were pleased to welcome Liam
Fitzpatrick, who is studying law at Warwick University, for
a summer placement.
liam reviewed the outputs of relevant workshops, systems and
processes, spoke with many employees and brought forward a number of
useful ideas and suggestions which will be implemented.
liam also started to work on an e-learning module designed to ensure
that everyone whose job role is impacted by data protection legislation
receives up to date training, complimented by tutor led courses, available
later this year, which will be delivered by the Company solicitors.
Thanks liam, and good luck with your studies.

The first proposed a fresh, locally sourced

The second presentation, by Baxterstorey, gained

In June a group of thirteen met for "The

bring "comfortable clothing" and sunscreen
and be prepared to learn about team work

For three testing days, this peer group from

to have fun. The highlight was an amazing
rendition of some popular TV shows! On a follow
up day in september, they were able to showcase
their learning, plan for the future and share
their thoughts on how the Company could be
even better.
Well done everyone for your enthusiasm and
good luck with your future team and leadership

ErP! ErP! ErP! This seems to
have been our focus for a
very long time. However,
now we can reflect on what
the Preston site has
actually achieved in order
for us to successfully
deliver our new ErP
compliant range of boilers.
The energy-related product
(erp) directive affected every
product and every function and
every individual has played
their part to make it happen.
• Assembly continued to
produce both non-erp and erp
compliant boilers on target
while dealing with
changeovers of product type
and processes, at the same
time as introducing the new
vertical packaging process.
• We created 18 conversion
kits to upgrade 350 training
and sales display boilers,
which saved the business a
huge amount of money.
• We took care to always
satisfy customer demands
while making sure we had as
little stock and component
waste as possible.
• In total we removed 140 non-
erp boilers from our portfolio
and replaced them with 111
new erp compliant boilers.
• We launched the new
potterton promax ultra range.
Throughout the changeover
to erp compliance, we recognise
that the hard work and
commitment of everyone on
the preston site has enabled
Baxi to continue to deliver
the high level of customer

Movers and shakers
Stephen has the most unusual
sounding job of 'pickler', and
when informed that he works at
Heatra Sadia as a factory
operative on the process of
building hot water tanks, his job
description becomes even more
intriguing! It turns out that a
'pickling' line is an essential part
of the tank making process, and
Stephen is only too happy to
enlighten us further about his
role in it.
“Though I am employed as a pickler
and pressure tester, the terms
‘pickler’ and ‘pickling' line in this
connection may be colloquial to the
industry. The process may more
correctly be referred to as working
on the 'etching' line, which involves
cleaning an etch from a weld. My
main role is to make sure that every
cylinder that comes through our area
is absolutely perfect in compliance
with the warranty or, if found to be
imperfect, is sent back to the factory
as a reject.
I have a typical day in as much as
there is a target number of tanks to
complete each day, which could be
230, but it varies according to the
types of tank being produced on a
given line and any pressure testing
issues that may be identified. I work
a rotating shift for a set number of
days either from 6am to 2pm or from
2pm to 10pm. each shift starts with
stringent chemical checks on the
acid levels of the cleaning fluids
used and the ph levels of recycled
water for rinsing and ensuring all
safety procedures are adhered to.
The cylinders must be logged as
they pass through and there is
paperwork to do at the end of
each shift.
I work as part of a team of four
operatives and we rotate our duties
each day – two as picklers and two
as pressure testers. A conveyor belt
runs from the welding area carrying
batches of 20 to 30 tanks into the
pickling area. As the tanks are
stainless steel, it is imperative to
clean all the inside welds to remove
any tarnish or anything that has
been touched with impure metals
to prevent any incidence of rust
that may invalidate the warranty.
A pickling machine is like a jig and
there are seven of these which can
each take four to six tanks. The two
picklers visually inspect the welds
for holes before loading the tanks
for the pickling process, which
comprises an acid wash and several
rinse stages, with both recycled and
a final fresh water rinse, before we
unload and reload them onto the
conveyor belt for pressure testing.
The two pressure testers load the
tanks into another jig in the pressure
testing bay, fitting on component
parts to make the tank air tight, then
fitting water pipes and air pipes
ready for the pressure test cycle.
That process starts by filling with
water and raising the pressure to
16-18 bar which is stabilised for
10 to 15 minutes. If there are any
holes in the welds, the water would
start to seep through. The pressure
is then dropped to 10-12 bar so that
we can carry out a visual inspection
with a uV beam and mark any
holes. All tanks that are OK will be
offloaded from the testing bay to
drain when they will move on to
the final assembly area. Any faulty
tanks are returned to the
welding bay.
Our team is also responsible for
monitoring the effluent room where
cleaning of all the acid residue and
water used in the washing and
rinsing processes takes place before
it enters a settlement tank where it
can be cleaned to the correct ph
prior to recycling back into the
process. As with the chemicals
monitoring, any problems in this
area will be indicated on a control
panel, an audible alarm will sound
and, if appropriate, the plant will
automatically shut down. Our team
will then correct the problem, which
means that a large part of our job
is safety awareness and
implementation.
The process is continuous which
suits me as I like to keep busy and
the job is challenging because it is
quite physically demanding. I like to
perform to a high standard, so I get a
lot of satisfaction from ensuring the
products that pass through my area
are produced to the highest quality.”

  • 3. Baxi joins the Telegraph Business ClubBaxi has achieved the distinction of being the first manufacturer in the HVAC industry to be invited to feature in a showcase of British businesses renowned for their strategic insight, stability and growth. 3 >>CanDo News To raise the profile of digital marketing within the Manufacturing and engineering sector, a sector that does not always see the importance of this rapidly increasing marketing channel, Katapult, a digital marketing agency, compiled the Manufacturing and engineering edition of the Midlands Marketing Index. The report looked at our online presence and took into account many factors including responsiveness of website, content, digital tools, videos, social media, blogs, search engine optimisation (seO) and lead generation performance. Over the last few years, Baxi's marketing strategy has shifted significantly towards digital marketing, based on extensive insight into customer needs and the customer journey. Our website has been developed to offer the best possible experience across devices, and over the last couple of years have put in a huge amount of work developing content for the website, including helpful tools and videos to support our visitors. This effort has really paid off and we have seen significant year on year increases in website traffic, engagement and conversions. For Baxi this is just the start of a really exciting journey where digital will continue to be a major focus for us in 2016 and beyond. Thank you and well done to everyone for your hard work and dedication, which is obviously now making a significant impact in the market place. This showcase is an online resource pioneered by The Telegraph newspaper which aims to share the secrets of success behind well-known companies, pinpointing what differentiates them from their competitors. The www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/ businessclub/business-clubvideo/ manufacturing-sector videos/11705778/ baxi.html link provides access to the Baxi video, which is entitled 'Making it easy Matters', in which staff and installers discuss how Baxi has become a leading light for the heating industry, with footage exploring its manufacturing plant, research and development facilities and training courses. David pinder, CeO for Baxi uK and Ireland, comments: "We are proud to have been selected by The Telegraph to join other prestigious companies in featuring in such a respected resource for British businesses. We hope that our film will give our customers and homeowners an insight into what makes us tick and how everything we do centres around our 'make it easy' ‘We help installers to help their customers’ ‘It’s easy to work with Baxi’ ‘..it’s a damn good boiler!’ ‘They’re fantastic, our workers’ Are we Work Fit? Managers at Warwick were impressed by the practicality and realism of the WorkFit programme, a tailored service offered by the Downe’s Syndrome Association, dedicated to making employers aware of the learning profile of people with DS. The programme provides structured, cohesive support for both employer and prospective employees, based on achieving a clear progression towards encouraging people with Ds to realise their employment goals. The WorkFit initiative is in perfect tune with our CsR aspiration to seek to have as meaningful as possible involvement in our local community and Warwick managers gave their full support to exploring the possibility of placements being offered to Ds candidates. An initial meeting was held with the Association’s employment Development Manager, which was filmed by the BBC for a documentary. Discussions are continuing and information about the outcome, and any resulting documentary, will be contained in a future Issue. In the meantime, we can all be proud of yet another shining example of how our Baxi values can be, and are being, realised in meaningful action. gAS SAFeTy WeeK Baxi is fully committed to supporting the annual Gas Safety Week, which raises awareness of gas safety in the UK's 23 million gas fuelled homes. This year Baxi launched a social media search for a Gas safe hero, inviting gas safe engineers to post examples of where they have made a dangerous gas situation safe. The winner received £150 worth of vouchers, whilst on each day of Gas safety Week a selected twitter follower received a carbon monoxide alarm. paul hardy, managing director at Baxi, commented: “Gas safety is a huge issue for both the industry and consumers. Our Gas safe hero campaign championed engineers up and down the country, while our giveaway of carbon monoxide detectors helped hammer home the dangers of unsafe gas appliances.” Potterton Promax Ultra Combi We have launched the new Potterton Promax Ultra Combi. It has been designed specifically for housebuilders and social housing providers to give them a boiler with excellent SAP 2012 seasonal efficiency rating that provides cost effective Building Regulations compliance. Baxi on the road The Baxi Make it Easy offer was an eye-catching part of the Heating & Renewables Roadshow when it visited five regional venues in September. This annual event, designed to give industry professionals the opportunity to ‘educate, communicate and collaborate’ lived up to its billing in prestigious locations in Coventry, exeter, Farnborough, edinburgh and Manchester. Baxi was delighted to be shortlisted for Innovation of the year and Training Initiative at the heating & Renewables Awards 2015, held the Ricoh Arena, Coventry. CIphe awards ceremony Heatrae Sadia recently hosted the Student Awards for the Norfolk branch of CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineers). Attended by local college students and branch members, the evening featured a presentation, given by Jon Cockburn, head of Marketing, on what heatrae sadia is doing with regards to the new erp legislation, as well as a factory tour, a buffet and the awards presentations. The three best performing students, emma Taylor, simon Ashley and Jordan Gracia (pictured), received their awards from the CIphe uK president, Terry stephenson, who was performing his first official duty in his new role. This was the first time the university had taken part, and the competition was fierce. The design brief was to create a device that would be mobile, powered by a 6v motor, with the ability to both climb and descend, and able to support an overall weight of 650g when at the top of the climb. Chris and his colleagues designed a device that completed its complex task in 5.5 seconds, earning them second place in local heats, and qualifying them to compete in a regional final against other North West universities. Chris recalls: “On the day of the competition our device proved to be the best, beating entries from other universities such as lancaster, Manchester and liverpool, as well as from the uClan team that edged us out in the heats. We are now off to IMeche headquarters in london in October, to represent the North West universities in the national finals.” Whilst this was going on, Chris achieved excellent grades in the first stage of his Degree I, and has been awarded Best performing student in stage one of the Beng Mechanical engineering Degree. “Congratulations, Chris”, does not sound nearly enough! Climbing the heights During the course of the year at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Chris Commins, Trainee Product Design Engineer, Preston, was asked, with others, to design and develop a device to compete in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) 2015 Design Challenge. Warwick Food and Film Festival As part of supporting the Warwick Rocks project throughout 2015, Baxi helped sponsor the Food and Film Festival, held over the August bank holiday weekend. Main attractions were a streetfood line-up from some of the nation’s top streetfood providers, with four classic films. In order of appearance, these were Back to the Future, Toy story, Jurassic park and Raiders of the lost Ark, providing laughs, thrills and spills of a family-friendly variety. The event organisers expressed a special thank you to Baxi for their additional support for the events in 2015. Baxi supports ‘Town’ Stratford Town FC has been an important part of the Stratford community for over 60 years, and in recent years has played with distinction in the Southern Football League, last season gaining promotion to the Premier Division. • 5. 5 >>CanDo Focus on Customer Support The conference sessions, based on the principles of The Art of Brilliance, focused on the importance of training, team work, feedback and sharing a vision of attaining our business strategy by concentrating on demand creation rather than sales push. Andy Whittaker, the inspiration behind the Art of Brilliance, highlighted the importance of change and how a 1% improvement can make all the difference. The transition from Great to Brilliant had already begun, and the conference identified milestones on the road-map towards the ultimate goal. Feedback showed that customer satisfaction is improving but there is a need to define what Brilliant looks like for our customers, and how to achieve lifetime loyalty. This loyalty is not just about the products we sell, as the quality of our pre- and post-sales services plays an important part in providing a customer experience that will encourage them to recommend Baxi. Brilliant companies need good ideas and everyone has something to offer in the drive to develop innovation. The idea sharing theme was a constant throughout the conference’s activities, including the wide ranging breakout sessions, the Graffiti Wall (which certainly did attract some thought provoking comments!) and the final reminder to delegates to provide feedback to the conference survey. All feedback will be used in the planning of the 2016 Brilliant event. Great work by individuals is being highlighted through the Beyond the Call of Duty scheme, which gives everyone the opportunity to nominate colleagues for meaningful recognition. A number of industry and more general awards are being entered to showcase the great work that is being done thoughout Baxi Customer support. All award winners will be decided later in the year. The impressive support given to Marie Curie, ourchosen charity, has already achieved the status of Brilliant and reflects admirable commitment to our business values. To conclude what had been a highly successful conference, delegates were strongly motivated to aim high, work hard and succeed together in creating something truly Brilliant at Baxi Customer support. Hosted by Lee Robinson, UK Customer Services Director, the Baxi Customer Support Conference 2015 looked back on the inspirational progress made since 2014 in moving the customer journey from Good to Great, whilst looking forward to the challenge of achieving the ultimate goal of moving from Great to Brilliant. The Company remains fully committed to both the CsR and MVV programmes and recognises the need to run both initiatives efficiently and to eliminate duplications were they exist. Accordingly, a full review of the uK structure required to run the initiatives has been undertaken, including dovetailing with the BDR Thermea CsR programme 'Better Together'. We recognise that excellent work continues at the local business unit level and we want to ensure that support structures are in place to enable this to continue. The Heatrae Sadia Health and Wellbeing Week was certainly fit for purpose, as it offered employees information and challenges focused on a healthy lifestyle. Involvement in some options required passive participation, such as a health check, a massage, or consuming free fruit and smoothies. Other activities were more energetic, namely a timed cycle challenge and a table tennis competition, whilst taking part in the exercise bike raffle involved taking a real chance! The opportunities provided were, hopefully, of on-going benefit to all participants. There was, however, one undoubted beneficiary, namely Marie Curie for whom the combined efforts raised £587. The good work was carried on by a Book and Bake sale a few weeks later, which earned a further £75 for our chosen charity. The number of bins in the trial is limited, but this is being addressed. There should be at least one nearby, outside the room. How often will the bins be emptied? Daily. If this is not required, at least every two days. Where can I put my tea bag? In the general waste – but store them in a cup/container to limit the number of trips to the bins! What if I can’t leave my desk as I take calls? Try taking the rubbish each time you have a natural break. Why isn’t there a bin closer to me? Bin locations are being monitored. If needed, extra bins will be provided, but the overall aim is to reduce the number of bins. We used to separate cans and coffee cups, why can they all go in the same one now? Our recycling partners send mixed recycling to an MRF (Mixed Recycling Facility), where separation takes place. since June, we have recycled 450 kilograms of rubbish, which would normally have gone to straight to landfill. That's as much as a Grand piano or a Grizzly bear weighs! We have also identified a local charity to collect our empty drinks cans for recycling. Warranties are designed to give total piece of mind and protection. So it is important that customers understand our terms and conditions, and these have received a Crystal Mark under the Plain English Campaign. unfortunately, notwithstanding our best efforts, since April this year customer non-compliance with our warranty requirements has resulted in the invalidation of over 50 warranty claims. We do not intend to just accept this situation, and are redoubling our efforts to ensure that customers fully understand and comply with our warranty requirements. As a result, Baxi Customer support is carrying out a review of the three key components on which warranty compliance is based, and once this review has been completed, improvements will be identified and incorporated into our warranty documentation. Southern golf Day The Southern sales team recently organised a golf day at the Welcombe Hotel Spa and Golf Club in Stratford. The assembled guests completed a challenging and competitive day, but still had the energy to support a raffle and auction so generously that they raised an amazing and inspirational £3755 in aid of Marie Curie. The 4th July is a date that’s looked forward to by everyone in America, but it was no less anticipated by a Baxi team of eight cyclists, as it saw the start of the Ring of Kerry charity cycle challenge. The event comprises seven stages, covering 134 miles on all types of roads, and is a tough challenge, but the Baxi team members were more than a match for everything that the Kerry course planners could throw at them. The team proudly celebrated their considerable achievement, which raised €400 for the Irish hospice Foundation and a further €560 for Kerry Rape Crisis Centre. Rafters raise the roof! There was plenty to shout about when a crew of salty sea dogs from Erdington entered the Leamington Spa Rotary Club annual raft race. Although new to the event, they had no hesitation in taking to the water, as this was a way of raising money to support our chosen charity. suitably attired and equipped, Ben Reeson, paul Gussin , paul Brookes, Dan letts, ed Jones and Jon Russell made a formidable crew, but they were glad of help from steve Ridgway to get the raft to the start line. The going was tough and the rain torrential but, as Ben explained, they soldiered (should that be sailored?) on and completed the course in one hour 26 minutes, finishing a creditable eighth out of eleven, and raising a splendid £205 for Marie Curie. The ‘Heatrae Sadia Mountaineers’ took on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in July in aid of our charity partners. The team, comprising steve Crabtree, Andrew harvey, pat Mace, Kevin Mace, Mark storey and Trevor Ralph, faced horrendous weather conditions during their 26 mile trek to scale pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, the three highest peaks in yorkshire. They all covered the full course, involving climbing a total height of 7,067 feet, in an average time of 10 hours 12 minutes. This exceptional achievement has so far raised over £1350 for Marie Curie, and if anyone wishes to make a donation, please note that http://www.justgiving.com/ Heatraesadia-Teamsponsors/ is still open for business! Baxi Customer support recently proved the benefits to be gained from an evening of rounders, when 14 players did all of the above at Warwick park, without suffering any injury, whilst in the process raising £32 for Marie Curie. A winning score for all concerned! Play the game! Marius Dunkley, Customer Support Manager, Baxi Genuine Parts, made it a hat-trick of annual challenges in August when he hosted the Monkey Tail’s 24 hour gaming event at Brooks House, in aid of Marie Curie. everyone was welcome to take part in a 24 hour video game marathon, even those who did not know a sonic hedgehog from a sonic Boom, promising all comers a gaming tournament, madness from sleep deprivation and sore thumbs. eleven current and former Baxi colleagues put their digital gaming skills to the test at various times during the 24 hour session, which resulted in a still accumulating cache of donations for Marie Curie amounting to £968. To walk the wall is a popular attraction, with many of the walks being far from easy. Marie Curie made available over 50 places on a particularly challenging 10 mile hike, and nine of our colleagues were lucky enough to gain a place. The team duly set off to follow in the footsteps of the Romans and completed their hike in an impressive five hours. Along the way they found they were also walking in the footsteps of Robin hood when they visited an imposing tree made famous in a hit movie ‘prince of Thieves’, based on his legendary deeds. Throughout their travels, the fearless hikers were enveloped in a scotch mist, but this did not spoil their journey through the mists of time, and there was certainly nothing imaginary about the rock solid £1,734.50 that they raised. The Lake District is known for its range of cycling options, which attract both road cyclists and mountain bikers, and take in country lanes, permitted cycleways and bridleways, whilst offering some fantastic views. some routes are of the monster variety, and it was one such 54 mile long challenge that was taken on by 16 colleagues, who sensibly bore the name Team 54. The team was tested to the full as they tackled their picturesque and challenging route through the lakes. starting and finishing in Keswick, it was breathtaking in every way, with one rider admitting “It was the hardest thing I have ever done. If I had not been doing it for charity, I would have rung for a car to collect me and take me home!” But everybody bravely battled through and proved that they were in the right gear, because their great efforts on behalf of Marie Curie have so far raised some £2,000 and counting. When Marie Curie throws down a challenge you are certainly not known for stepping aside, or indeed back, and this was proved twice over on the 4th October. On that day, colleagues from Remeha Commercial and Baxi Customer support tackled a 10 mile walk along hadrian’s Wall, whilst in the lake District, colleagues from the preston site were cycling for 54 miles, both challenges taken on to help achieve this year’s funding target for Marie Curie. As part of my training I had the chance to participate on an internship abroad - at Baxi in the UK. Although the industry of Baxi is not a stranger to me because of my father’s work as sales director at Brötje – also part of the BDR Thermea group – I was curious to experience what the workday in england is like. When I was informed I would be in the marketing department I couldn't believe my luck – perfect for my brand management studies! From day one at Baxi everyone received me in a very lovely way. I immediately perceived the progressiveness of the company: the five colours of the values which run through all areas of the company, the simplicity of how Baxi presents itself and the transparency towards employees and customers – not least due to the glass fronts of the offices! I really enjoyed my internship and I am looking forward to reporting to my colleagues in Germany that you don’t go to the pub and eat scones in the office every day, but that we can learn a lot from your positive and lovely attitude at work and in general. Thank you for all the precious memories! John gets down to basics The Business was glad to welcome John Parker for a three week summer placement this year when he did excellent work on two projects. The first was to build a new database to record all of our training activities. Working from preston, John communicated with the head of employee Development based in Warwick, using a range of technologies including Face Time, video conference, and webex. They only met twice, showing you can work with people at different locations without jumping into a car! John’s second project was to redesign our Course schedule and learning and Development Directory, both of which can be viewed in the “learning and Development” section of Ourintranet. John improved the look of both documents and added hyperlinks allowing full access from either the contents page or the course schedule. Thank you John, not only for reminding us that communications can be environmentally friendly, but also for making it easier to navigate our staff development portal. Baxi best for Martha Last year I completed my second year on the BSc Retailing, Marketing and Management Degree course at Loughborough University. A year in industry is a mandatory part of the degree, and I was fortunate enough to hear about a possible placement at Baxi and was delighted to be successful in my application. On the assessment day I was impressed by the importance Baxi places on its employees, and the emphasis on investment in people has been evident throughout the 14 months that I have been here. On 7th July 2014 I reported to Anna Clague, Marketing Manager for Baxi services, who made my work experience equally as enjoyable as it was educational. I received a very warm welcome from the Marketing department and have learned so much from working within this supportive team. The induction period was excellent, including visits to the factory, spending time with salesmen, engineers, and their customers, and call centre staff which helped me to understand how marketing relates to the business as a whole. Throughout the year I was exposed to a variety of tasks, projects and events and the knowledge and practical experience I have gained will be of great benefit for my final year of studies. I now have increased determination and confidence to pursue a career in marketing. liam – a safe pair of hands To help in our compliance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act, we were pleased to welcome Liam Fitzpatrick, who is studying law at Warwick University, for a summer placement. liam reviewed the outputs of relevant workshops, systems and processes, spoke with many employees and brought forward a number of useful ideas and suggestions which will be implemented. liam also started to work on an e-learning module designed to ensure that everyone whose job role is impacted by data protection legislation receives up to date training, complimented by tutor led courses, available later this year, which will be delivered by the Company solicitors. The other four regions are aiming for entry to the ‘365 Club’. Full credit is due to all engineers for being much more hazard aware. WARWiCK SAleS The divisional sales managers all attended a five day IOsh Managing safely course at Warwick. At the end of the course, three groups were formed, each group working on one key safety area. These were: 1. Customer visits 2. Manual handling and transporting of goods 3. Company cars The intention was to carry out a risk assessment and then implement any identified improvements. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of incidents recognised and reported. WARWiCK oFFiCeS The August local cascade brief contained a safety briefing on hazards, near misses, accidents and how to report them. As a result, reporting has increased significantly. eRDiNgToN In July, erdington held its second safety Day, led by the safety Values group, with the focus on manual handling and accident/hazard reporting. Central to the day was the re-launch of the ‘Good spot’ campaign, which encourages the reporting of potential hazards and near misses. Following this successful day, hazard reporting has significantly increased. Don’t relax, let’s make these numbers even more impressive! Erdington delegates were not left in the dark about the Health & Safety message! Complying with erp It’s all over for the canteen As the current tender to provide canteen services at Preston was due to expire, Karen Pearce led a team of Club Street colleagues to select the next caterer. They invited candidates to present to a Dragons' Den style panel. The first proposed a fresh, locally sourced seasonal menu, the second offered flexible services to locations across the site, whilst the third provided a fixed 24/7 self-service facility. The second presentation, by Baxterstorey, gained the ‘Dragons’ unanimous vote, in particular for service availability all over the site. With the help of our new partners, the canteen has been completely redecorated and features prints of photos taken by the Baxi photographic society. All are welcome to come and sample it for themselves. leadership Challenge In June a group of thirteen met for "The Leadership Challenge" in a stunning Staffordshire setting. Instructions were few – bring "comfortable clothing" and sunscreen and be prepared to learn about team work and leadership! For three testing days, this peer group from across the business worked hard, but remembered to have fun. The highlight was an amazing rendition of some popular TV shows! On a follow up day in september, they were able to showcase their learning, plan for the future and share their thoughts on how the Company could be even better. Well done everyone for your enthusiasm and good luck with your future team and leadership experiences. ErP! ErP! This seems to have been our focus for a very long time. However, now we can reflect on what the Preston site has actually achieved in order for us to successfully deliver our new ErP compliant range of boilers. The energy-related product (erp) directive affected every product and every function and every individual has played their part to make it happen. • Assembly continued to produce both non-erp and erp compliant boilers on target while dealing with changeovers of product type and processes, at the same time as introducing the new vertical packaging process. • We created 18 conversion kits to upgrade 350 training and sales display boilers, which saved the business a huge amount of money. • We took care to always satisfy customer demands while making sure we had as little stock and component waste as possible. • In total we removed 140 non- erp boilers from our portfolio and replaced them with 111 new erp compliant boilers. • We launched the new potterton promax ultra range. Throughout the changeover to erp compliance, we recognise that the hard work and commitment of everyone on the preston site has enabled Baxi to continue to deliver the high level of customer satisfaction expected from our customers. Thank you everyone.

BAxi CUSToMeR SUPPoRT Neil Cafearo has been appointed Technical support Manager heATRAe SADiA Simon Bailey, Manufacturing Manager Chris Sykes, BDM – special Applications Alan Mcginley, BDM – Key & Corporate Accounts Ben Murphy, BDM – Key & Corporate Accounts 15 >>CanDo For the record Movers and shakers Stephen has the most unusual sounding job of 'pickler', and when informed that he works at Heatra Sadia as a factory operative on the process of building hot water tanks, his job description becomes even more intriguing! It turns out that a 'pickling' line is an essential part of the tank making process, and Stephen is only too happy to enlighten us further about his role in it. “Though I am employed as a pickler and pressure tester, the terms ‘pickler’ and ‘pickling' line in this connection may be colloquial to the industry. The process may more correctly be referred to as working on the 'etching' line, which involves cleaning an etch from a weld. My main role is to make sure that every cylinder that comes through our area is absolutely perfect in compliance with the warranty or, if found to be imperfect, is sent back to the factory as a reject. I have a typical day in as much as there is a target number of tanks to complete each day, which could be 230, but it varies according to the types of tank being produced on a given line and any pressure testing issues that may be identified. I work a rotating shift for a set number of days either from 6am to 2pm or from 2pm to 10pm. each shift starts with stringent chemical checks on the acid levels of the cleaning fluids used and the ph levels of recycled water for rinsing and ensuring all safety procedures are adhered to. The cylinders must be logged as they pass through and there is paperwork to do at the end of each shift. I work as part of a team of four operatives and we rotate our duties each day – two as picklers and two as pressure testers. A conveyor belt runs from the welding area carrying batches of 20 to 30 tanks into the pickling area. As the tanks are stainless steel, it is imperative to clean all the inside welds to remove any tarnish or anything that has been touched with impure metals to prevent any incidence of rust that may invalidate the warranty. A pickling machine is like a jig and there are seven of these which can each take four to six tanks. The two picklers visually inspect the welds for holes before loading the tanks for the pickling process, which comprises an acid wash and several rinse stages, with both recycled and a final fresh water rinse, before we unload and reload them onto the conveyor belt for pressure testing. The two pressure testers load the tanks into another jig in the pressure testing bay, fitting on component parts to make the tank air tight, then fitting water pipes and air pipes ready for the pressure test cycle. That process starts by filling with water and raising the pressure to 16-18 bar which is stabilised for 10 to 15 minutes. If there are any holes in the welds, the water would start to seep through. The pressure is then dropped to 10-12 bar so that we can carry out a visual inspection with a uV beam and mark any holes. All tanks that are OK will be offloaded from the testing bay to drain when they will move on to the final assembly area. Any faulty tanks are returned to the welding bay. Our team is also responsible for monitoring the effluent room where cleaning of all the acid residue and water used in the washing and rinsing processes takes place before it enters a settlement tank where it can be cleaned to the correct ph prior to recycling back into the process. As with the chemicals monitoring, any problems in this area will be indicated on a control panel, an audible alarm will sound and, if appropriate, the plant will automatically shut down. Our team will then correct the problem, which means that a large part of our job is safety awareness and implementation. The process is continuous which suits me as I like to keep busy and the job is challenging because it is quite physically demanding. I like to perform to a high standard, so I get a lot of satisfaction from ensuring the products that pass through my area are produced to the highest quality.” A day in the life of...
