Letter from the Chairman
Please may I take this opportunity to invite you to the Hadley Wood Association AGM on Wednesday 22
November at 8pm, at the Centre, to hear of some new developments as well as reports of this year’s
activities and finances.
It will also be an opportunity for members views, ideas for the future and volunteers for activities and
management. There are many opportunities for us as well as the constant need for protection against
inappropriate development. We need to plan for a new Centre and renewal of the Lease. We have lively
planning and rail affiliates as well as a thriving tennis club, pre-school and other users of the facilities. There
is much more we can do to support and extend such community spirit if we have active members.
The Association currently has the minimum three trustees but no other formal executive structure. The
trustees wish to set up a wider involvement in management, probably with a management committee to
manage the many responsibilities of the Association more effectively and develop its vision for the future. A
number of individuals have been helping informally over the last months and it would be good to expand
this group. The trustees will set up a new management committee after the AGM, but will welcome views
and especially volunteers for management involvement.

your particular area of experience. This is for non-trustees, but additional trustees can also be appointed.
Formally the Association needs to appoint a new trustee to maintain the minimum of three. Trustees retire in
rotation and can be reappointed at the AGM. Sadly the retiring trustee this year, Bernadette Jackson is
unable to continue due to other commitments. Bernadette has been an extremely valuable trustee helping us
put in place some important principles of governance and good charitable practice. I have particularly
valued her professionalism at meetings as she quickly grasps the issues and comes to a workable friendly
solution - thank you very much Bernadette for your many years
of service.
The trustees would like to recommend Robert Wilson as the new
trustee for appointment at the AGM and would welcome other
nominations. Robert has lived in Hadley Wood since 1986,
currently in Crescent East. He is a solicitor, now non-practising,
having retired last July after several decades as a partner at
international commercial law firm Holman Fenwick Willan
(including time as Finance Partner on the Management
Committee and then Senior Partner). Robert has been helping the
trustees over the last months with law related matters such as
preparation for lease renewal and with shared user agreements,
with the benefit of many years familiarity with Hadley Wood as
well as exercising his legal experience. We shall welcome
Robert’s closer involvement in running the Association.

The Common
It is probably safe to assume that everyone reading this
article is familiar with Hadley Woods, or to give it its proper
name Monken Hadley Common. It is also a pretty safe bet
that very few people are aware of the fact that the Common
is managed and maintained entirely by volunteers and
receives no funding from either central or local government.
Apart from a few rent and wayleave agreements and
occasional money received for granting rights to filming etc.,
the Common is reliant on local people supporting our small
charity, “Friends of Hadley Common”. The charity makes
grants for the management of the Common that are deemed
to be of benefit to the local community. Historically, these have included grants for the: biannual grass
cutting of the large open area to the east of Camlet Way, work of tree surgeons to keep the woods safe, the
refurbishment and maintenance of the large white gates on the roads that mark the boundary of the
Common, a new tool shed for the team of volunteers who go out every week clearing litter, ditches and
paths as well as a longer term projects set out in the Management Plan. More information, and an

Problem dog packs
The Management Committee of the Common and the Curators who are responsible for the day-to-day
maintenance of the Common have been increasingly concerned during the last three years about the increase
in commercial dog walking on the Common and the irresponsible behaviour of some of these dog walkers.
Typically, with no sign of a dog lead or a poo bag in evidence, these dog walkers have a pack of 6 – 10 dogs
“under their control”
Generally this activity takes place in the vicinity of the car park at the foot of Bakers Hill, close to the railway
line, as the walkers are able to park their vehicles there. There have been a growing number of complaints
from members of the public, including elderly walkers on their own, people walking their own pet dog and
families with young children, who have felt intimidated or have found their enjoyment of the Common
spoiled by the presence of large, noisy groups of dogs. Dog faeces are also an increasing problem. The local
community police have been alerted to these issues but, despite their action, there has been no appreciable
improvement. The curators have been made aware of four incidents, including one in September, when a
commercial dog walker was badly bitten while trying to separate two of the dogs in her charge.
The Management Committee resolved that an approach should be made to Barnet Council with a request that
it take action. A number of local authorities have made dog control orders under the Clean Neighbourhoods
and Environment Act 2005. A briefing note and supporting papers were prepared which were submitted to the
councillors for High Barnet Ward and I had a meeting with Councillor Wendy Prentice and Councillor David
Longstaff on 21st
October 2017. They informed me that there is already an administration motion, which is to
be considered by the Council at its full meeting this week, proposing that the Environment Committee should
be requested to investigate the introduction of Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) under the Antisocial
Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. If approved, these could limit the number of dogs an individual can
walk at any one time as well as empower the Council to grant licences for commercial dog walking. The
committee would undertake a statutory consultation and make contact with interested parties.
It is to be hoped that progress can soon be made to control the problem and the curators will respond to the
consultation at the appropriate time.

“Portillo Moment” for Flying Scotsman’s Designer
Hadley Wood Rail User Group decided in 2016 to commemorate the world famous locomotive engineer Sir
Nigel Gresley at his home station of the 1920s. They
joined forces with The Gresley Society Trust to design and
fund a decorative plaque to adorn the station forecourt and
planned a launch event with fun for all the family on 7th
October 2017.
Over 300 people turned out to see Hadley Wood’s former
MP turned television railway personality, Michael Portillo,
return here to unveil the plaque in the Arena – transformed
for the day from the old railway yard by Bill Morris! We
were honoured by the presence of many distinguished
guests, including two of Michael’s successors at
Westminster, two Mayors and Sir Nigel’s grandson, Ben
Godfrey, with his daughter, Nina.
Philip Benham, Chairman of The Gresley Society, said,
“The fact that Sir Nigel Gresley was a commuter from here
makes Hadley Wood particularly special and I’m delighted
that the Hadley Wood Rail User Group have wanted to
mark this particular period in his life. It’s a great pleasure
to see so many people here. This station has vastly
improved since the days when I was Area Manager in the
1980s – particularly the improvements in access for those
who might not find moving around so easy,” in a reference to our new step free entrance, opened in May by
Great Northern in response to a Rail User Group campaign.
Unveiling the plaque in a highly entertaining speech, Michael Portillo remarked, ‘‘Sir Nigel Gresley is a
name that still provokes an extraordinarily emotional response. When I travelled on Flying Scotsman last
year, there were so many people in the crowds to greet it that there were police to control them; but the
police who were meant to be controlling the crowds were actually photographing the train. These
locomotives were superb pieces of engineering and they do seem to capture our imagination in the most
extraordinary way.”
Children from our two local primary schools at Hadley Wood and Monken Hadley also played a starring
role. Pauline Hazelwood, Associate of the Guild of Railway Artists, chaired the judges of the Rail User
Group’s Art Competition on “Trains - Past, Present and Future” and the winners received their awards from
her and Michael Portillo. Their artwork is now on display on the platforms. Monken Hadley Choir gave a
captivating performance of a song specially written for the occasion, celebrating Flying Scotsman’s iconic
journey from King’s Cross to Edinburgh through Hadley Wood. Visit our new web page

Other attractions included the Gresley Society and North London Society of Model Engineers, Barnet
Museum, the Hadley Wood Association and refreshments by Hadley Wood WI. The RUG also ran three
competitions which raised £1,000 for Inclusion Barnet, the local deaf and disabled people’s organisation
which works towards a more accessible society for all, chosen for its affinity with the station’s step free
entrance. Our cheque will be presented to the CEO at the next RUG meeting on 15th

Railway Museum for their generous raffle prizes, to Julie Hall for the Flying Hadley cake, and to the
fantastic Event Committee of Gillian Henley, Christine Jenkins, Richard Whitton, Lisbeth Wirth, Anne-
Marie Pearce, Bill Morris and John Hall, who all threw themselves into the preparations that made
everything go like clockwork!
Everyone using the main entrance can now greet Sir Nigel as they pass: his plaque was installed in its
permanent location in a ceremony performed by Hadley Wood’s resident Gresley Society member, Eric
Pearce, in the presence of the plaque donors. A permanent reminder of a great Hadley Wooder!

Station Cuttings: Last Chance to Influence the 2018 Timetable
Now that the excitement of Michael Portillo’s unveiling has died down and the plaque to Sir Nigel Gresley
adorns the station entrance, it’s time to focus our collective energy on what we still need to do to get the best
possible train service in the brand new timetable.
GTR’s Timetable Project Manager came to the Gresley Unveiling (and won a raffle prize!) and once again
we’ve invited their Head of Strategic Planning back to address the next Rail User Group (RUG) meeting. We
still await final confirmation of the improved weekday proposal of 4 trains per hour, and we expect to hear a
preview of the third and final phase of their 2018 Timetable Consultation, the equally important but
unpublished proposals for late night and weekend services.
Please join us on Wednesday 15th
November at 8pm at St Paul’s Church. The bigger the turn-out, the
stronger our voice. You can also sign up to “Inside Track”, GTR’s Stakeholder extranet, to receive official
updates straight to your inbox. Phase 3 Consultation will run until year-end and it’s essential to maximise the
responses from Hadley Wood to keep our needs firmly on GTR’s radar. Please bear in mind that nothing is
certain until the timetable is actually published!
Other news in brief: While our station manager Martin Brown continues treatment for his illness, his
experienced colleague James Gillett has stepped into his shoes and initiated a month’s trial to keep the
ticket office open to provide warmth and shelter for waiting passengers. Please use it and give us your
feedback. And RUG has achieved good permanent signage for the step free entrance and inclusion of the
southbound circulatory route in TfL’s Accessible Journey Planner. We continue to press for better lighting
and traffic management in the lane leading to Crescent West. Further enhancements will depend on usage, so
please spread the word about the new entrance and the Assisted Travel Scheme that together enable step free

Hadley Wood resident Joseph Runchman has outlined how Barnet can make the most of its status as the
location of one of the key battles in the Wars of the Roses. In Commemorating the Battle of Barnet, a special
report compiled in his own time over the course of more than a year, he set out how Barnet could learn from
the example of Leicester’s tourism bosses in capitalising on the
discovery of Richard III’s body in the city.
Joseph, a year 13 pupil at Queen Elizabeth’s School Barnet, plans to
study History at university. He first offered to become a volunteer at
the museum after his interest was piqued when he attended a lecture
on the Battle of Barnet held at Hadley Wood’s St Paul’s Church.
He has also been involved in the search for the oft-disputed precise
location of the Battle of Barnet, volunteering for the recent
archaeological digs at Kitts End Farm. “I found the dig fascinating
and I’m hoping that good finds will bring fresh impetus and another
focal point. We will never be lucky enough to have a ‘king in the car
park’ scenario, but knowing where the battle took place will help to
drive interest and generate a larger commemoration.” To leverage
support for his findings, he presented the report at a special event at
Barnet Museum, where the guests included local MP Theresa
Villiers, the Leader of Barnet Council, Cllr Richard Cornelius, other
council representatives and representatives of the museum. After the
report presentation, Joseph said: “It was a really good experience presenting to people in those positions and
it went very well – I think they were receptive.”
Museum trustee and curator Michael Noronha said, “Three things in particular strike me about Joseph’s
work: first, he showed a high degree of creativity and imagination to think of the project and fit it into his
subject interests of Economics and History; secondly, he showed a great deal of persistence and diligence in
carrying out the task; and thirdly, the output was well argued and very well presented.”

Christmas at St Paul’s Church, Hadley Wood
We will be holding our full program of events to which all the community will be most welcome, whatever
your beliefs. The children’s Nativity will take place on December 17th at 10:30 am when the birth of Jesus
will be narrated with the children joining in, dressed up in various costumes that will be available on the day
- no auditions required and multiple roles are accepted especially if everyone wants to be Mary!
In the evening of the 17th at 7 pm there will be our candle lit Festival of Lessons and Carols, followed by a
warm glass of mulled wine and mince pies which is always a wonderful social event catching up with local
friends. The traditional highlight of our year is always on Christmas Eve when Christmas celebrations begin
with Christingle Services at 4 pm and 6 pm when we light Christingle oranges and sing carols by candle
light. Later there is a small but faithful Midnight Communion at 11 pm. Finally, on Christmas Day, there
will be a family Communion at 10:30 am which has all the fun of the day along with remembering the most
important birthday the world has every experienced. It would be wonderful if you can join us at one of these
events, and in the meantime I would like to take this opportunity to wish you in advance a very Happy
Christmas!

Boundary Commission
Re- drawing the borders of parliamentary constituencies for elections to Parliament
is carried out at regular intervals usually about every 8 to12 years. The number of
constituencies in London have to be reduced from 73 to 68 and by law every
constituency must contain between 71,031 and 78,507 electors. London’s
boundaries have just been re-drawn and revised.
Our proposed boundaries are shown left with Hadley Wood occupying the top end
of a banana shaped constituency enclosing Enfield Southgate and...us. Monken
Hadley is in the Barnet constituency.

Tug of War
Hadley Wood’s annual tug of war will be held
on the Railway bridge on New Year’s Day
2018 at 11.00am. This year’s organisers are
Amanda and Neale Haynes who have promised
a family friendly fun get-together at which
everyone is welcome. The two photos show
the 2012 and the 1912 events. The dress code is
up to you but whilst the 1912 outfits would be
absolutely acceptable they could prove
impractical.
