1. In this, the 70th anniversary of the end of
WWII, the process must begin for the house
and grounds to be restored and opened for
the public benefit – its history celebrated and
promoted. The campaign has garnered
support from the politicians, institutions and
WWII veterans from across Britain, and I hope
readers can also lend their support. There is
a petition to Enfield Council to do more to
assist, and all the information
(including the link to the petition,
twitter and facebook page) can be

TRENT PARK AT RISK
The listed assets at the heart of Trent Park –
the beautiful and historic mansion and
heritage landscapes – are at risk; the
Malaysian University that bought the site in
2013 are in financial difficulties, and the future
of the former Middlesex University campus is
uncertain.
I have launched a campaign with local MP
David Burrowes to ensure that, whichever
buyer comes along, public access can be
maintained across the grounds (as despite
this being enjoyed for decades, it can be
taken away) and that the listed house is
restored and re-opened for the Public’s
benefit.
We are fortunate in Hadley Wood to have a
historic gem on our doorstep. Trent Country
Park is not only a beautiful place to visit but
has a fascinating and illustrious history as a
pre-war Socialite’s playground that
subsequently played a hugely significant role
in World War II, much of which is only recently
coming to light.
As part of the Chase (which included
Hadley Wood), for 350 years Trent Park was
royal hunting forest enjoyed by Henry VIII and
Elizabeth I. In 1777 George III gave a lease to
the royal physician Sir Richard Jebb who had
recently returned from Trento in Italy where he
cured the King’s brother – hence the name of
the new estate, Trent Place. Sir Richard built
the first house on the existing site of the
mansion (remnants of which still exist) which
was later bought by the banker and Quaker
David Bevan (the Bevan’s were co-founders
of Barclays Bank).
The Sassoon’s bought Trent Park in 1908
and the socialite politician Sir Philip Sassoon
went about remodeling the house and
grounds for entertaining and impressing
guests at his grand country retreat. At Trent
Park Sir Philip built an aerodrome and golf
course, one of the world’s first heated
swimming pools, refaced the mansion with
bricks from the demolished Devonshire
House in Piccadilly, built a forecourt with
bricks from the old Westminster Bridge in a
Union Flag shaped pattern, had murals
painted by Rex Whistler, adorned the
landscape with Renaissance statues from
Stowe and Milton Abbey and even populated
the lake with exotic waterfowl and a pair of
king penguins.
Nearly all of these heritage features appear
to be still on site – but they are extremely
vulnerable. Indeed at the time of writing some
of the statues are unaccounted for. English
Heritage have assured me Trent Park is their
top priority and will be expediting their
investigations.
Winston Churchill was a regular visitor
producing several paintings at Trent including
The Blue Room in 1934. Edward VIII and
Wallis Simpson spent time together at the
Estate, as did Charlie Chaplin, George
Bernard Shaw, Lawrence of Arabia, Antony
Eden and even a young Queen Elizabeth II.
Indeed Her Majesty told David Burrowes that
she used to love the chocolate cake made by
the housekeeper, and even enquired about
the existence of the recipe!

2. An Update on Trent

Hadley Wood residents,
Thank you for your interest in the future of
Trent Park. We have pursued options to
secure a positive outcome for Trent Park
Campus for quite a time, and success
seems to elude us all. It is so important that
the heart and very special character of the
whole park are preserved and enhanced.
The Campus continues to deteriorate and
is now regularly abused for small time
commercial gain. The heritage assets are
more at risk today than ever, and the
prospects are not encouraging. If the
Campus fails, the whole park will lie in the
shadow of that failure.
The Friends, with support from numerous
other local bodies including Hadley Woods
Residents, feel it is time to take a more
active stance. We have just made an
application to Enfield Council for
Community Asset status for the Campus
heritage assets.
We see only upside for the Council in
these proposals. Failure is not to be
contemplated in view of what lies over the
hill for both Council and the community. We
hope residents will cheer us on our way, in
everyone’s interests.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
HW News. “Peter, that was a very well
attended and very interesting meeting in
Christ Church last Tuesday. There were
many questions afterwards but may we ask
you a few more.
Firstly, who owns the site now and what are
it’s dimensions?”
Peter “ACUMS (the Malaysian Medical
university) bought the 50 acre campus site
from Middlesex University in 2013. ACUMS

is now reported to be in administration and
we believe the Exim bank of Malaysia which
funded the purchase by ACUMS is now the
effective controller. The site contains the
Mansion of course and all the heritage
buildings (Orangery, Swimming pool,
Stables, Wisteria Walk and Long Garden,
Dower House) The campus also has all the
academic and accommodation buildings
dotted around, now unused. The land
outside the campus is owned by Enfield
Council (about 415 acres)”
HW News. “At the time of the Middlesex
University ownership, did students actually
study and receive teaching etc inside the
mansion? Or has it been unoccupied for
many years”?
Peter. “The Mansion was used for some
teaching but mainly for university admin-
istration. It has not been used since 2012”
HW News. “If you achieve the award of
Community asset status for the mansion
does this mean the community would
receive early warning of any future
developements “?
Peter. “Yes, the vendor would have to give
us 6 months to assemble a counter offer. In
that event, it would be our intention to
negotiate an escape route specifically for
the heritage buildings, working in
conjunction with qualified external bodies
of which there are many. The rest of the site
is outside the scope of our Community
Asset application”.
HW News. “Finally. You said at the
meeting that the Friends had applied for
funding from the National Trust? Have
there been any encouraging responses?”
Peter “We entered into discussions several
years ago to establish if the NT would
consider taking on the campus, and under
what conditions. This approach was on
behalf of the Trent Park Conservation
Committee, in anticipation of Middlesex Uni
leaving the site. The NT reviewed the history
of the campus and found the site
attractive but stipulated as a condition of
acceptance that we find a suitably dowry to
restore the buildings and help with the
startup costs. They seemed confident there
would be sufficient public appeal to make it
a goer as a venue - we now pursue a
solution along these lines; but that is not the
only option”.

As part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award
programme I chose to carry out litter
picking on Hadley Common. I’ve been
doing this in conjunction with the
Common’s Conservation Volunteers who
do great work in keeping the area tidy.
Equipped with my litter picker I have spent
a number of Saturday mornings traipsing
around our lovely common, filling bags with
discarded rubbish. On my first visit I filled 6
builders bags as I concentrated on the car
park at the foot of Bakers Hill & the adjacent
woods - these seemed particular favourites
for litterbugs. Since then I have picked all
over the Common & it’s been amazing to
see so much litter carelessly strewn across
such a beautiful area. Passing car drivers
seem to be the worst offenders & a
recurring item is the dreaded coffee cup.
Other common items are alcoholic bottles
& cans & we now have a huge number of
them in our garage awaiting recycling. It’s

my most exciting piece of ‘litter’ was the tail
fin of a WWII incendiary bomb that I found
in the woods. It seems that ‘dropping’
things in Hadley Wood has been going on
for quite some time!

I seem to have a never-ending task!

outstanding education for children from Hadley Wood and

Assisted Travellers’ Tales
Little did we think that we’d need to test out
Great Northern’s Assisted Travel services in
earnest! But during my recuperation from spinal
surgery, banned from lifting or carrying anything
heavy, my husband broke his arm, and so we
twice needed help with our luggage for
weekends away. This is what we found:
When you book, be sure to explain why you
can’t manage the station steps.
Looking able-bodied (as I did) raises station
staff eyebrows! Assistance at Hadley Wood is
restricted to weekday mornings 0625-1140.
Assistance at Finsbury Park failed both times and
feedback to Great Northern resulted in a refund
but didn’t solve the problem of changing trains.
However on a positive note, assistance at King’s
Cross worked well. And thanks to the three female
late-night passengers who kindly offered their help
to carry our cases up the 34 steps on return.

access initially to the northbound platform? Our
MP David Burrowes raised it in person with GN
executives in January, to warm murmurs but no
follow-up to date; our councillors are on the case
but Enfield Council has refused to support
Jason Charalambous’s request on the basis
of footfall. I have joined RailFuture, the UK's
leading independent voluntary organisation
campaigning for better rail services, in the hope
of leveraging their experience and clout for
Hadley Wood. All advice is that we’ll need to
organise local support to achieve progress, eg
form a Rail User Group. We hope this proposal
will be included on the agenda for the next
Hadley Wood Planning Forum meeting so
please let me know if you’re interested
in supporting this community benefit.

By the time you read this article the shovels
should be in the ground at Chase Farm
Hospital. This followed the Prime Minister
responding to my question in the
Commons by confirming that Chase Farm
is receiving £260 million investment. This is
not an empty pre election promise,
because I have ensured that the first
tranche of taxpayers money is released to
begin the works following approval of the
planning application. We will then see the
construction of a new 32,000
sq ft hospital with space to
accommodate all existing
services and to provide room
for expansion. The remainder
of the site will provide for
housing, with all sale receipts
being ring fenced to the
hospital, a new out of hours
GP centre and a new primary
school. The Prime Minister
also confirmed the success of
our campaign to extend Chase Farm's
urgent care centre which is now open from
8am to 10pm. I am pressing for longer
hours when a review takes place in June.
Another issue which has been around
throughout my time as MP has been the
performance of the train operator and
Network Rail. Commuters have rightly
complained that the significant cost of fares
is not giving good value given the repeated
delays and cancellations. At a public
meeting I recently hosted both Network Rail
and the new train operator Govia gave
assurances that improvements are literally
coming down the line.

inquiry into the serious and sadly increasing
issue of anti-Semitism.
We reported how the UK has led other
countries in tackling anti-Semitism, but we
need to remain vigilant and the horrific
events in Paris and Copenhagen show that
there is no room for complacency. Please

Parliament last month and show them
around Parliament. We ended the tour
fittingly in The Moses Room in the House of

had recently retired from the Committee
and was thanked for her many years of
service as “Raffle Queen”. The WI are

TAKE 7 DRY CLEANERS. UPDATE
As many of you will know, the Landlord of 20
Crescent West (the Dry Cleaners) applied for
planning permission to convert the shop into a
part residential dwelling. The application was
refused because of the Condition on the
property introduced by Enfield council in 1980.
This condition states ‘that the premises shall be
used solely as a dry cleaners or as a retail shop.
Reason: ‘to ensure the use of the premises
does not detract from the viability of this group
of retail shops which provide a useful local
service’.
The landlord has now put in a planning
application to have this condition removed.
If his application succeeds we would
probably have to close down . It might also
set in motion a process of closure of other
shops on the parade and their conversion
to residential accommodation.
We would welcome your support again in
fighting this change.
In the meantime may we sincerely thank
the Hadley Wood Association, our many
customers and friends from the Hadley
Wood Community, MP’s Bob Blackman
and David Burrowes, and the local
councilors including Jason Charalambous
as well as many others for their continued
support in fighting this application.

Our application to be a Planning Forum and
develop a Hadley Wood Neighbourhood
Plan has been forwarded to the Council.
They have checked our application and are
taking it forward. The first thing
they will do is to ask the Councillor
who heads the planning
committee (the planning portfolio
holder) for approval to consult on
our application. They hope this will
be done by the first week in March.
If that goes through they will then
consult for 6 weeks. They are likely
to send leaflets around to homes and
businesses in our area, put out web and
press notices and leave copies of our
application in libraries around Hadley Wood.
After this consultation, which I guess would
not end until the last part of April at the
earliest, the council officers will probably take
a report to the planning committee, detailing
our consultation replies and making
recommendations as to
whether our application to be
a planning forum should be
approved or not.
So there is quite a long
process left before we can be
properly up and running.
I propose that members of
the Forum and any other
interested residents should meet at 8.00pm
on the 25th March and 29th April at the
Hadley Wood Association Centre (far end of
tennis courts in Crescent East) for our next
two planning meetings.
We will start to get going with three work
streams, one looking at planning policies for
house extensions and new build on existing
plots, one at the future of the green belt and
one on public realm/streets/routes and
access. Anyone is welcome if they want to
get involved in these.
If residents receive a consultation letter
from Enfield council please do respond. The
whole of our application is now on the
website hadleywood.org.uk under the
heading Neighbourhood Plan.

BIKE RACK FOR HADLEY WOOD
It won't have escaped anyone's attention how much more difficult it is becoming to
park near the train station for the daily commute into town. I have often wondered if
anyone would cycle instead of driving and leave their bikes at the station if there was
a cycle rack adjacent to the ticket office. There are bike racks at High Barnet and
Cockfosters tube stations.
In the 9 years that we have been living in the area, I have tried leaving my bike on
two occasions. It has been stolen both times. If there was a bike rack, I'm guessing that
it would be well used and a CCTV camera would deter the opportunistic thieves. I have
been in email correspondence with Councillor Jason Charalambous on the matter. He
has suggested that those interested in the initiative should drop him a brief line
…at Cllr.jason.charalambous@enfield.gov.uk in support. He has mentioned to me that
although the funding for such projects has been committed for this year, he feels
positive that this is an initiative he could push through in the not too distant future.
