Mrs Rosemary Keane.
The news that Mrs Keane is retiring after
twenty years teaching will come as an
unwelcome surprise to the generations of
children who were taught by her at
Hadley Wood Primary School.
A local girl born and brought up in
Southgate, Mrs Keane wanted to be a
teacher from an early age
and after leaving school
attended Strawberry Hill
Teachers Training College.
Subsequently she married
(her husband is a highly
respected Head Teacher in
Clerkenwell) raised four
children and became a
much loved teacher at
Hadley Wood Primary.
She was first appointed
here in 1993 as a year two teacher under
the headship of Pauline Stonehouse
subsequently moving through years 3,4,5
and 1. She obtained further qualifications
in teaching children with special needs
but added “Actually all children are
special. There is such a wide range of
differences amongst them”.
As if teaching children was not enough
Mrs Keane has been a long term mentor
for student teachers from Middlesex and
Hertfordshire Universities. The fact that
two of her current students were
previously her pupils says something
about her ability to inspire others. Her
long term commitment to mentoring has
been recognised with Chartered London
teacher status and a Fellowship of the
College of Teachers.
I asked her about the job and her best
memories. “Organising partnerships and
district swimming galas was always a
challenge but very enjoyable’’ she
replied. “A trip to Cuffley Camp for three
nights with year five was a really great
experience. And I always loved being
involved with the drama performances
and of course sport”. She also has happy
memories of taking children to visit other
schools less well situated than ours
under the Community
Cohesion scheme and
organizing trips to the Tate
Gallery, the Science
Museum and the Regent’s
Park Mosque.
“Ever had a nickname?”
I asked. “not that I ever
heard she laughed “but you
never know.” What about
maintaining discipline? “I
have always believed in
giving praise for things well done. I think
this helped”. “Well what about really
naughty children?’ I persist. A slight
wince. And then reluctantly “well we do
have behavior strategies”. First a
warning, then moving the offending child
to another part of the classroom and
finally the ultimate horror of being sent to
join another class. “What about the place
of modern technology in teaching?” I
asked “No blackboards nowadays” she
replied “not even white boards”. She took
me to an adjoining classroom. Interactive
white boards driven by PC’s. Images
which can be altered by the teacher
without leaving a trace on the board after
the lesson is finished. I left, impressed by
the technology and a million times more
impressed by Rosemary Keane’s
example of a teacher at work. Words like
devoted, professional, hardworking,
skillful, compassionate and caring can be
overused but they apply absolutely here.
How lucky we are to have people of this
quality looking after our children.
Farewell and thank you Mrs Keane.

3. unintentionally stopping without the
full length of his train in the platform.
There were previously stop car marks
for three carriage trains, six carriage
trains, four carriage trains and eight
carriage trains. We now have
combined these into two stop marks:
for 3 and 6- car trains and for 4 and 8-
car trains. If a driver stopped either a
6-car or an 8-car train at a 3-car or a
4-car mark respectively, then half the
train would be out of the platform.
Although the risk of this ever
happening is very small, placing the
four and eight carriage marks and the
three and six marks together removes
the risk. Kind regards,

Cat Hill Development.
The third public meeting on the
redevelopment of the previous Middlesex
University site in Cat Hill took place on
Monday 4th March. The recommendation
by the responsible Planning Officer for
this Application was that the
development, which had been revised as
a result of previous objections, should be
approved.
There were in excess of 400
people attending the Meeting to
witness submissions by the
Planning Officer, the Developer
and various experts to explain
the measures that had been
taken to nullify the main seven
reasons for the previous plans to
be rejected. These included a reduction
in height of the flats, a reduced number
of total dwellings to 231, a different
configuration of buildings to allow the
pond at the southern end of the site to be
undisturbed and to give a more spacious
feel to the development.
Equal time was given to the
representatives of the public who strongly
expressed their views as to why the
development should not take place.
Among their reasons for rejecting this
development was a lack of compatibility
with surrounding properties, the creation
of unmanageable stress on existing
education, health services, highway
infrastructure and parking and an
increase in the problem of flooding in
the area. These concerns were
supported by two letters from the local
M.P.s as well as representation from
Councillors, both from local and
neighbouring wards.
An opportunity was given for these
points to be answered by the Planning
Officer and the Developer and any further
questions from the Planning Committee
members followed.
After 3 hours of intense
discussion the proposition was
put to the vote of the Planning
Committee, who by a majority
of three decided that this
development should proceed,
subject to conditions.

continuing to oppose this development

Feeding the Birds
Understandably the birds have been
relying on garden feeders to get them
through the prolonged winter. We’ve
been buying sunflower hearts by the kilo
at the pet shop in Potters Bar. The blue
tits and great tits glide in, take a seed and
nip away again – not very energy efficient.
Long-tailed tits arrive in small flocks, feed
for a while and move on. Over the last
couple of years our robins have learnt to
climb into the feeder cage but the
dunnocks and chaffinches have to rely on
getting to the seeds that fall on the
ground before the squirrels and magpies.
Goldfinches and greenfinches come
from time to time. The great spotted
woodpecker is a cautious visitor which
clings to the bottom of the feeder cage
and reaches in for the seeds but is very
easily disturbed.
We used to put out bread and other
titbits but as this only attracts more
magpies, pigeons, crows and squirrels
we rarely do it now. Less pleasing are the
sparrowhawks and kestrels which swoop
in and take a tit in flight or even from
inside the feeder cage. Kestrels are
supposed to live on mice and voles but,
as they have been able to
hide in the long grass this
year, the kestrels have had
to target small birds
instead. We enjoy listening
to the wrens but rarely see
them scurrying around on
the ground.
In the last month we have
had a new visitor, which we
did not recognise. This
small finch, identified with
the help of the RSPB as a
lesser redpoll, is about the
size of a blue tit, streaky
brown with a distinctive red
patch on its head and a
black bib under its beak. It
breeds in Scotland, Wales and along the
east coast of England but moves into
middle England during the winter. It is a
seed eater with a gluttonous appetite for
sunflower hearts. It perches on the feeder
pole oblivious of the patrolling birds of
prey and unperturbed by us. At its leisure
it moves into the feeder cage and
consumes seeds non-stop for about ten
minutes at a time. How it manages to fly
is a mystery but it does and is soon back
for more. Consumption of sunflower
seeds has more than doubled and we
think there is only one of them. When the
weather improves it will be off to Scotland
or Wales or the northeast.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor
Some months ago we adopted a skinny
starving cat which had been dumped by an
uncaring owner. It soon became a much loved
pet especially by my Grandchildren. When he
suddenly went missing for three days we were
frantic. Unfortunately he was found dead in a
neighbours garden. The vet’s test results
revealed that the cat had died from rat poison.
My grandchildren were devastated. My
neighbour is now very worried every time one of
her three cats ventures out. If there are poisons
put outside by individuals to eliminate foxes or
mice please be careful. This could result in
another tragedy for someone’s beloved pet.

Dear Editor
I have been asked to inform you of an incident
that occurred in DUCHY ROAD on 13/02/2013
whereby a Mercedes C180 SE was entered by
suspect(s) unknown. The car owner found her
car had been entered and a quantity of used
parking tickets taken? The car boot, two doors
and glovebox had been opened and though
the car had been left secure no damage had
been done to gain entry. The victim believes
suspect(s) may have used an electronic device.
If you could put a few lines in Hadley Wood

with Mercedes vehicles, that would be very
helpful.

Panama to Nicaragua.
Nicola Forsyth gets
back on her bike.
Those of you who occasionally turn the
pages of your local magazine may
remember a previous article about Nicola
cycling for Professor Robert Winston’s
charity Genesis Research Trust. Most of
us trying to raise money for a charity are
content with running in local 5K events or,
at a stretch, a marathon. Not Nikki. Last
time she cycled to the Great Wall of
China. This time it was a trip through a
mere three countries from Panama via
Costa Rica to Nicaragua. With about 80
other ladies, a leader called Marco, Dave
the mechanic and somehow at one stage
Professor Winston himself.
Nicola kindly sent me a diary of the trip.
This was a hilarious read which sadly
space does not permit including here.
However to give you a taste of what she
went through I have selected a typical
entry from the diary. On the day chosen
our heroine is somewhere in the middle
of Costa Rica. ‘It was soooo hot and the
hill so long but it gave me a great sense
of achievement to reach the top…only to
go down again, up again and down
again. Tracey (one of the many friends
Nikki made) has had a major malfunction
with her bike and is waiting for Dave to
come along and fix it. Pia and I are now
cycling together all on our own, the
clouds are black, the wind comes out of
nowhere and the rain starts. We finally
ride into town (Santa Cecilia) drowned
and like everyone else, covered in mud.
AGAIN! I thank my lucky stars for my
bike’s mudguards and my Red Devil
Vietnamese cape. We resist the Bar and
go to the ‘camp’.
This is a concrete building with open
top walls and a corrugated iron roof-in
other words a cowshed with no cows-
(just us instead!). However there are two
showers (cold water) and almost no
queue. As soon as the showers are done
we go off to the bar for beers and
Smirnoff Ice (in my case). The music is
great, we feel high on our achievement
and it’s not long before we’re
dancing and singing – the locals
just sat and stared in disbelief”.
Later on… ‘Thanks to Jill providing
me with a cheap sleeping bag that
is just a simple rectangle, (rather
than a proper one that tapers to the
feet) there is plenty of room to
move. So as I settle I realize that I
am warm and surprisingly
comfortable. I am surrounded by
friends, there’s a lulling sound of 80
people breathing (no snoring yet),
a gentle breeze drifting through the open
top allowing me to marvel at a
magnificent display of stars…Its been a
truly wonderful and memorable day’.
We are glad to report that Nikki has by
a miracle returned safely to the UK and
through her efforts raised over £3000 for
Professor Winston’s charity.
