Harrow People 3
Cllr David Perry
Leader of the Council
Our ambitious plans to build a better
Harrow are moving ahead – as our
main story in the new and improved
Harrow People shows. We’re
pleased to welcome some great
architects on board to draw up plans
for the current Civic Centre site.
Harrow’s regeneration goes far
beyond building new homes. It’s
about improving our Town Centres
and the entertainment, culture
and nightlife in Harrow. It’s about
building sporting facilities fit for the
21st century. It’s about providing
the parking and transport links our
borough needs. And it’s about
building a new Civic Centre for
community use.
National Memorial
As a Council we have formally
responded with our support and
suggestions for a National Memorial
for Victims of Terrorism Overseas.
In Harrow, our diverse
communities come together in
shock and grief every time we hear
news of another life being lost to
terrorist atrocities across the world.
A national memorial would be a
fitting tribute to the lives that have
been tragically lost. Families and
friends of these victims, as well as
the nation, should have a place
to grieve.
Batting for Harrow’s
cricket teams
There’s some great sport stories
in this magazine – and a massive
congratulations to Harrow’s Boys
and Girls under-13s cricket teams
which both qualified for the London
indoor finals competition at Lords
Cricket Ground! It’s great to see
Harrow’s young sport stars doing so
well, and as a Council we continue
to support them.

…THOSE GUYS HANGING AROUND HONEYPOT LANE
They’d better stop – or
anyone picking them up
for cash-in-hand work is
going to get a £100 fine and
maybe even arrested and
prosecuted.
Those are the new powers
the police have, in that part
of Harrow – after Harrow
Council brought in a “Public
Spaces Protection Order”.
Residents in the
Queensbury area asked for
a crackdown, after people
loitering outside B&Q
started causing problems
with anti-social behaviour,
harassment, intimidation
and mess.
So it’s now forbidden “to
approach any person in
a public place within the
restricted area to offer, or
with the intent to offer, them
casual employment”.
The Council hopes this
will put an end to the area’s
attraction for exploitative
employers. The Order runs
for a year – so if you witness
somebody breaching it,
you can tell the Police by
phoning 101.

Budget news
Budgeting forThese are uncertain times for Councils
all over Britain – with costs going up,
thanks to inflation and an increasing
population – and funding from
government going down.
The good news is that Harrow
residents now have something stable to
rely on – because the Council has put
in place its first-ever three year budget.
So right up to 2020, there are plans
in place to preserve Harrow’s vital
public services, and plans, too, to give
residents real value for money.

Cllr David Perry, Leader of
Harrow Council:
“Our priority is always to cut
costs by being more efficient
and business-like. By reducing
the number of senior managers
and sharing services with other
councils we are saving millions for
Harrow taxpayers while protecting
vulnerable people.”
Cllr Sachin Shah, Harrow
Council Finance Portfolio
Holder:
“Harrow is growing and the need
for our services is greater than
ever. This year, Harrow Council will
spend more than £5million cleaning
streets and maintaining parks,
more than £20million for long-term
care for older people and people
with a disability, nearly £2million on
fostering children and more than
£11million supporting vulnerable

Building a Better Harrow
S
tephen Taylor Architects,
Allies and Morrison Architects,
Sergison Bates Architects,
Peter Brett Associates and
Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects
have won the contract to design a new
neighbourhood in the heart of Harrow.
Harrow People spoke to Stephen
Taylor, Paul Eaton and Peter De Souza.
Why does the design team include
three architectural firms?
Stephen: Between us we have a real
wealth of experience in masterplanning,
design and delivery of residential
schemes internationally and across
the UK – and especially in London with
schemes like the Nightingale Estate
in Hackney, St Andrews in Bromley
by Bow and Chance Street housing in
Bethnal Green.
Paul: We’re better together, because
we bring a depth of experience in
housing-led regeneration. We’re really
looking forward to working as a design
team to deliver new homes, a primary
school, and fantastic public realm and
public space.
How will you involve local residents,
businesses, community groups,
council staff and others in the design
process?
Paul: Allies and Morrison has really
strong experience in developing designs
in partnership with local communities.
We’re proud of the way we’ve
co-produced residential communities
in places like Nine Elms and Canada
Water.
Peter: Nobody will be left out and
we’re going to reach out in every way
we can. Flyers, letters, emails, social
media – and some really exciting events
– so Harrow residents are involved and
influence decisions from beginning
to end.
What do you know about Harrow?
Peter: As a design team we already
have plenty of experience of working
right here in Harrow. Personally, I’m
already working with Harrow’s Housing
team on the infrastructure around the
regeneration of the Grange Farm Estate
in South Harrow.
Stephen: Yes and our firm is working
with Harrow’s Regeneration team
on the Haslam House site, where
we’ve been consulting on designs for
some new homes. We’re replacing a
derelict Council building there – it’s on
Honeypot Lane.
n You’ll be hearing and seeing plenty
more of these architects, as they
get stuck into the design process
for Station Road. Harrow People will
keep you up to date every step of
the way.

Now – one year on – it’s

Pecking Order in Stanmore
says it takes diners on ‘a food

Renowned for their chicken
– of course! - they say their
success is down to support
from local residents and
businesses.
“Harrow is a great town
for business to set up and
we’re extremely proud to be
part of the community. Local
support from businesses
and residents is great and
they are always wishing you
to do well. The council in
particular are great in taking
you through the process
of setting up a business.
It’s a safe place to operate
and recruitment has been
relatively straightforward.
“Prior to us launching, we
spent at least six months
developing the concept,
brand, location, build, design,
supply chain, people and
training. If you’re thinking of
starting up, it does involve lots
of work, and late sleepless
nights – it’s the passion for
your business that carries you
through.”

Pinner children celebrate
brand new facilities
Kenton’s kids – or should
that be kidz? – are off to
a bright start thanks to
an old water store, some
derelict land and the
Council’s creative vision.
Bright Kidz nursery
was looking for a new
site when its former
home - at Priestmead
primary school - began
a multimillion-pound
rebuilding project of its
own.
Things were looking
bleak for teachers and
mums until the Council
Community team leapt to
the rescue.
In just seven months
they turned a derelict
yard in nearby Centenary
Park, Stanmore, into
an eco-friendly nursery
that will bring income to
the council for years to
come.
Bright Kidz manager
Varsha Patel says: “Our
nursery is “Outstanding”,
and so is our new
home. We’re delighted
with the new building
– and everyone in the
surrounding community
has been very positive.”
Mia Pittas, Alistair Philips, Christopher
Karaylannis and Thomas May cut the ribbon
T
here was no ceremonial cannon
– but there was a ribbon and
a celebration at Cannon Lane
School for the official opening
of the school’s new building.
Head Teacher Alastair Philips
was joined by the school’s youngest
and oldest pupils to celebrate the
completion of building works – and the
10 new classrooms provided by the
Council.
Mr Philips said: “We are delighted
with the new facilities. Cannon Lane
is a very popular primary school and
this expansion doesn’t just allow a
greater number of children to join us
from the local community. We have the
opportunity to develop a real sense of
togetherness and community here, and
it is a real privilege working with the
children and their families.”
Harrow’s £100 million school
expansion programme has been going
on since 2013, and has now created
over 6,000 much needed primary
school places for Harrow children.

Creating a stronger, safer
and prosperous Wealdstone
Harrow Youth Parliament isn’t just the
voice of Harrow’s young people… it’s
taking action to help all of us, young
and old.
And its work is helping change
Wealdstone High Street for the better.
Harrow is one of the safest boroughs
in London. But people are still worried
about Wealdstone.
Gang culture, alcoholics, poor lighting
and poor community atmosphere
are just some concerns raised by
thousands of people living and working
near the High Street.
That’s why Harrow Youth Parliament
launched its own consultation in
Wealdstone – asking about safety, what
needs changing and who should take
responsibility for it.
Dara Foody, 14, is helping to lead the
project. “For a rather long time it has
become apparent that young people do
not feel safe in the Wealdstone area.
As the voice of young people, we
cannot simply stand by and let these
issues grow. Therefore we feel obliged
to act upon feedback with the aim of
creating a stronger, safer and more
prosperous Wealdstone.”
The consultation gathered an
amazing 1,000 responses… and now
the Harrow Youth Parliament is using
the answers from businesses, residents
and the local community to work with
police and the Council to improve the
town.
The Youth Parliament’s hard work
couldn’t come at a better time. Last
month, the Council won a £1.5 million
grant to improve Wealdstone. Watch

A
year ago the borough
welcomed its 63rd Mayor – and
its first from the Sri Lankan
community! Cllr Krishna Suresh
took on the role and the responsibilities
that come with it. He has been up and
down the borough tirelessly, attending
hundreds of events and meeting
thousands of residents, young and old.
“What a fantastic year it has been.
It’s been an honour serving the
borough as Mayor of Harrow.
“I have had the privilege to meet
some amazing people, communities
and organisations. What stands out
most is how despite our differences, be
it culture, religion or background, we all
get along. We should be proud of this.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their
support and for helping to raise money
and awareness for my chosen charities
- Harrow Association of Disabled
People and Harrow Young Musicians.
“As I now go back to my role as
councillor for the Rayners Lane ward, I
still look forward to meeting residents
and working towards a better Harrow
for all.”
Some of the key highlights for the
Mayor include Remembrance Sunday,
the New Year’s Day Parade, Thai
Pongal, Clean for the Queen, and
representing Harrow at the World

Karen takes part in games of boccia,

YOU
Thanks for doing

Richard
What’s left from processing your
food waste is turned into a liquid
fertiliser, which goes to local
farmers like me to grow crops.
So, when you
charge your phone,
or buy vegetables
in the supermarket,
you could be
benefiting from
your own recycling.
With your food
waste, nothing
goes to waste!
Harrow People 23
Since its introduction in October, you’ve used
our food waste collection service to recycle
more than 2,000 tonnes – saving Harrow about
£190,000. Thank you – and well done! But
what’s happened to all those peelings, plate
scrapings, tea bags and scraps? We followed
the food waste journey to find out.
Paul, Harrow Council
I collect your food waste
bin every week and
empty it into the back of
our vehicle.
Jason,
Harrow Council
When we’ve
finished our daily
round, I tip your
food waste at a

Dave, BioGen
We bring all your food waste to
Biogen’s local anaerobic digestion
plant. I monitor the tanks in which
microorganisms break down your
food waste to produce biogas.

We monitor the engines fuelled by
the biogas. It’s a very clean way

sports teams – but at
youth level, our teams are
feared across the capital!
Harrow’s young stars did us
proud again at this year’s London
Youth Games – with both the boys’
basketball team and girls’ hockey
team striking gold.
The boys outlasted Haringey
in a tight semi-final that went
to extra time, before storming
past Westminster with a stirring
comeback in the final to see them
lift the trophy.
England youth star Sesan
Russell, 16, is one of the team
tipped for the very top. “Basketball

Hopefully I can play collegiate level
basketball in the United States and
then play professional basketball
either in Europe or United States.”
The girls, meanwhile, began as
underdogs, but tore up the form
book - jumping from a 16th place
ranking to wrestle the crown of
champions from Wandsworth in an
exciting final.
And the victories kept on
coming – with individual golds in
swimming and judo, a silver for
the tennis team and a brace of
bronzes for trampolining and boys’
handball.
Harrow finished a brilliant 17th
overall (up from 21st the previous
year).

  • 3. Harrow People 3 Cllr David Perry Leader of the Council Our ambitious plans to build a better Harrow are moving ahead – as our main story in the new and improved Harrow People shows. We’re pleased to welcome some great architects on board to draw up plans for the current Civic Centre site. Harrow’s regeneration goes far beyond building new homes. It’s about improving our Town Centres and the entertainment, culture and nightlife in Harrow. It’s about building sporting facilities fit for the 21st century. It’s about providing the parking and transport links our borough needs. And it’s about building a new Civic Centre for community use. National Memorial As a Council we have formally responded with our support and suggestions for a National Memorial for Victims of Terrorism Overseas. In Harrow, our diverse communities come together in shock and grief every time we hear news of another life being lost to terrorist atrocities across the world. A national memorial would be a fitting tribute to the lives that have been tragically lost. Families and friends of these victims, as well as the nation, should have a place to grieve. Batting for Harrow’s cricket teams There’s some great sport stories in this magazine – and a massive congratulations to Harrow’s Boys and Girls under-13s cricket teams which both qualified for the London indoor finals competition at Lords Cricket Ground! It’s great to see Harrow’s young sport stars doing so well, and as a Council we continue to support them. • 4. 4 Harrow People …THE ARTS CENTRE WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH...? Hopefully it’s over!...and for more than 250 people it’s been better than usual, thanks to Warm Homes Healthy People, an award-winning project that helps vulnerable people with long-term health conditions keep winter at bay. The team responsible focus on keeping homes warm, whilst reducing bills, but they can also help with benefits advice, fitting a smoke alarm, fixing a doorbell, helping someone to get out and about, whatever’s needed in fact to make that person well, warm, happy and secure. The service will start visiting people again in the next few months – to register your interest call 0800 118 23 27. It’s been reborn as a hub for new business. Harrow Council and partner company ‘Meanwhile Space’ renovated the building so that entrepreneurs and start-ups can test their business out, for real. It’s a rare chance for businesses to experiment with a new idea. It follows the success of the Start Here project in Wealdstone where work space is offered free of charge for up to four weeks - helping new and emerging businesses to grow and develop. If you are interested in the project visit www. meanwhilespace. com or email anna@ meanwhilespace.com. Fundraising is well underway to raise £3.5million for a new ‘Southbank Centre’ for Harrow. Cultura London, an independent charity, are running Harrow Arts Centre and their plans include galleries, cafes, bars and a new larger theatre to complement the historic Elliott Hall. The campaign has raised more than £30,000 to bring in new cinemas, which is part of the first phase. Most of the funding will come from grants, triggering a £1million Harrow Council loan. To help Cultura London’s fundraising effort, call 0208 938 3720. Find out more at www.culturalondon.uk. …RAYNER’S LANE LIBRARY …THOSE GUYS HANGING AROUND HONEYPOT LANE They’d better stop – or anyone picking them up for cash-in-hand work is going to get a £100 fine and maybe even arrested and prosecuted. Those are the new powers the police have, in that part of Harrow – after Harrow Council brought in a “Public Spaces Protection Order”. Residents in the Queensbury area asked for a crackdown, after people loitering outside B&Q started causing problems with anti-social behaviour, harassment, intimidation and mess. So it’s now forbidden “to approach any person in a public place within the restricted area to offer, or with the intent to offer, them casual employment”. The Council hopes this will put an end to the area’s attraction for exploitative employers. The Order runs for a year – so if you witness somebody breaching it, you can tell the Police by phoning 101. ...WINTER

  • 6. Budget news Budgeting forThese are uncertain times for Councils all over Britain – with costs going up, thanks to inflation and an increasing population – and funding from government going down. The good news is that Harrow residents now have something stable to rely on – because the Council has put in place its first-ever three year budget. So right up to 2020, there are plans in place to preserve Harrow’s vital public services, and plans, too, to give residents real value for money. £5.3m Regeneration and Planning £13.3m Housing £74.7m Adult Social Services For years to come, we’ll give thousands of older Harrow people dignity, independence and support with day centres, overnight respite care, home visits and free advice. £164m Benefits Payments Where does your money go? Total £559.8m £43.4m, Finance, IT, HR and other overheads £4.6m Customer Services Cllr David Perry, Leader of Harrow Council: “Our priority is always to cut costs by being more efficient and business-like. By reducing the number of senior managers and sharing services with other councils we are saving millions for Harrow taxpayers while protecting vulnerable people.” Cllr Sachin Shah, Harrow Council Finance Portfolio Holder: “Harrow is growing and the need for our services is greater than ever. This year, Harrow Council will spend more than £5million cleaning streets and maintaining parks, more than £20million for long-term care for older people and people with a disability, nearly £2million on fostering children and more than £11million supporting vulnerable children and their families.” 6 Harrow People

  • 8. 8 Harrow People Building a Better Harrow S tephen Taylor Architects, Allies and Morrison Architects, Sergison Bates Architects, Peter Brett Associates and Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects have won the contract to design a new neighbourhood in the heart of Harrow. Harrow People spoke to Stephen Taylor, Paul Eaton and Peter De Souza. Why does the design team include three architectural firms? Stephen: Between us we have a real wealth of experience in masterplanning, design and delivery of residential schemes internationally and across the UK – and especially in London with schemes like the Nightingale Estate in Hackney, St Andrews in Bromley by Bow and Chance Street housing in Bethnal Green. Paul: We’re better together, because we bring a depth of experience in housing-led regeneration. We’re really looking forward to working as a design team to deliver new homes, a primary school, and fantastic public realm and public space. How will you involve local residents, businesses, community groups, council staff and others in the design process? Paul: Allies and Morrison has really strong experience in developing designs in partnership with local communities. We’re proud of the way we’ve co-produced residential communities in places like Nine Elms and Canada Water. Peter: Nobody will be left out and we’re going to reach out in every way we can. Flyers, letters, emails, social media – and some really exciting events – so Harrow residents are involved and influence decisions from beginning to end. What do you know about Harrow? Peter: As a design team we already have plenty of experience of working right here in Harrow. Personally, I’m already working with Harrow’s Housing team on the infrastructure around the regeneration of the Grange Farm Estate in South Harrow. Stephen: Yes and our firm is working with Harrow’s Regeneration team on the Haslam House site, where we’ve been consulting on designs for some new homes. We’re replacing a derelict Council building there – it’s on Honeypot Lane. n You’ll be hearing and seeing plenty more of these architects, as they get stuck into the design process for Station Road. Harrow People will keep you up to date every step of the way. n If you want to get involved with the Council and help us Build a Better Harrow, email us now at regeneration@harrow.gov.uk. Meet the architects! A new design team is getting to work on bringing Harrow’s Civic Centre site to life We have really strong experience in developing designs in partnership with local communities.

  • 10. Only in Harrow A year ago, Dhilon Solanki and Vishav Roma took that incredibly tough and daunting first step – and risked their money and their careers on their big idea. Now – one year on – it’s safe to say it was worth it. Pecking Order in Stanmore says it takes diners on ‘a food experience like no other.’ Renowned for their chicken – of course! - they say their success is down to support from local residents and businesses. “Harrow is a great town for business to set up and we’re extremely proud to be part of the community. Local support from businesses and residents is great and they are always wishing you to do well. The council in particular are great in taking you through the process of setting up a business. It’s a safe place to operate and recruitment has been relatively straightforward. “Prior to us launching, we spent at least six months developing the concept, brand, location, build, design, supply chain, people and training. If you’re thinking of starting up, it does involve lots of work, and late sleepless nights – it’s the passion for your business that carries you through.” n Find Pecking Order at Buckingham Parade, The Broadway, Stanmore HA7 4EB. n www.peckingorder.co.uk n To celebrate Pecking Order’s first birthday, they are offering residents a £10 food voucher. These are ‘homes fit for heroes’, built after the First World War. It’s one of Harrow’s oldest developments – and remains a vibrant community at the very heart of our borough. Up Your Street L❤VE YOU, n The Kingsfield Arms has been a part of Honeybun for generations. Now residents are trying to get it registered as an Asset of Community Value. That would mean the building will always have to be a pub – cheers! 14 Harrow People LOCAL HISTORY KINGSFIELD ARMS

  • 16. The Bright Kids are all right… and so is the park 16 Harrow People Building a Better Harrow Pinner children celebrate brand new facilities Kenton’s kids – or should that be kidz? – are off to a bright start thanks to an old water store, some derelict land and the Council’s creative vision. Bright Kidz nursery was looking for a new site when its former home - at Priestmead primary school - began a multimillion-pound rebuilding project of its own. Things were looking bleak for teachers and mums until the Council Community team leapt to the rescue. In just seven months they turned a derelict yard in nearby Centenary Park, Stanmore, into an eco-friendly nursery that will bring income to the council for years to come. Bright Kidz manager Varsha Patel says: “Our nursery is “Outstanding”, and so is our new home. We’re delighted with the new building – and everyone in the surrounding community has been very positive.” Mia Pittas, Alistair Philips, Christopher Karaylannis and Thomas May cut the ribbon T here was no ceremonial cannon – but there was a ribbon and a celebration at Cannon Lane School for the official opening of the school’s new building. Head Teacher Alastair Philips was joined by the school’s youngest and oldest pupils to celebrate the completion of building works – and the 10 new classrooms provided by the Council. Mr Philips said: “We are delighted with the new facilities. Cannon Lane is a very popular primary school and this expansion doesn’t just allow a greater number of children to join us from the local community. We have the opportunity to develop a real sense of togetherness and community here, and it is a real privilege working with the children and their families.” Harrow’s £100 million school expansion programme has been going on since 2013, and has now created over 6,000 much needed primary school places for Harrow children. • 17. Creating a stronger, safer and prosperous Wealdstone Harrow Youth Parliament isn’t just the voice of Harrow’s young people… it’s taking action to help all of us, young and old. And its work is helping change Wealdstone High Street for the better. Harrow is one of the safest boroughs in London. But people are still worried about Wealdstone. Gang culture, alcoholics, poor lighting and poor community atmosphere are just some concerns raised by thousands of people living and working near the High Street. That’s why Harrow Youth Parliament launched its own consultation in Wealdstone – asking about safety, what needs changing and who should take responsibility for it. Dara Foody, 14, is helping to lead the project. “For a rather long time it has become apparent that young people do not feel safe in the Wealdstone area. As the voice of young people, we cannot simply stand by and let these issues grow. Therefore we feel obliged to act upon feedback with the aim of creating a stronger, safer and more prosperous Wealdstone.” The consultation gathered an amazing 1,000 responses… and now the Harrow Youth Parliament is using the answers from businesses, residents and the local community to work with police and the Council to improve the town. The Youth Parliament’s hard work couldn’t come at a better time. Last month, the Council won a £1.5 million grant to improve Wealdstone. • 18. 18 Harrow People A year ago the borough welcomed its 63rd Mayor – and its first from the Sri Lankan community! Cllr Krishna Suresh took on the role and the responsibilities that come with it. He has been up and down the borough tirelessly, attending hundreds of events and meeting thousands of residents, young and old. “What a fantastic year it has been. It’s been an honour serving the borough as Mayor of Harrow. “I have had the privilege to meet some amazing people, communities and organisations. What stands out most is how despite our differences, be it culture, religion or background, we all get along. We should be proud of this. “I’d like to thank everyone for their support and for helping to raise money and awareness for my chosen charities - Harrow Association of Disabled People and Harrow Young Musicians. “As I now go back to my role as councillor for the Rayners Lane ward, I still look forward to meeting residents and working towards a better Harrow for all.” Some of the key highlights for the Mayor include Remembrance Sunday, the New Year’s Day Parade, Thai Pongal, Clean for the Queen, and representing Harrow at the World Culture Festival in India and Douai, France – Harrow’s twin town. • 21. My story Karen Havard South Harrow ADB allet lover Karen has been attending Vaughan Neighbourhood Resource Centre in West Harrow since she was 18 years old. Karen has Down’s syndrome and leads a full and busy life thanks to Vaughan. Dad Geoff says “she absolutely loves it there”. He adds: “She’s always busy. The staff are excellent and provide lots of things to do.” Karen takes part in games of boccia, football and dancing but ballet is her first love. Until recently - the closest she had come to following in the steps of her favourite dancers was watching them on TV. But last year Karen realised her dream of taking ballet classes of her own – thanks to Ballet Burst, a project at Flash Musicals. Geoff says she loved her weekly lessons and would leap at the chance to do more ballet in the future. For now, Karen is more than happy with her activities at Vaughan. “She’s a happy girl, always smiling,” he said. Terry from Flash Musicals writes: “It was great to have Karen dancing with us here – and we have Musicals Theatre Workshops for anyone who wants to get active on the stage! “If you want to be brave like Karen and give it a go, why not email us at flashmusicals@aol.com or call 020 8930 9930 or 07956 846375” “The Vaughan staff are excellent and provide lots of things to do” Harrow People 21 Get involved and have fun with Flash Musicals Karen cooking up a storm at Vaughan NRC NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!
  • 22. 22 Harrow People How it works Turning food waste into… money! YOU Thanks for doing your bit and collecting your food waste for recycling. Richard What’s left from processing your food waste is turned into a liquid fertiliser, which goes to local farmers like me to grow crops. So, when you charge your phone, or buy vegetables in the supermarket, you could be benefiting from your own recycling. With your food waste, nothing goes to waste!
  • 23. Harrow People 23 Since its introduction in October, you’ve used our food waste collection service to recycle more than 2,000 tonnes – saving Harrow about £190,000. Thank you – and well done! But what’s happened to all those peelings, plate scrapings, tea bags and scraps? We followed the food waste journey to find out. Paul, Harrow Council I collect your food waste bin every week and empty it into the back of our vehicle. Jason, Harrow Council When we’ve finished our daily round, I tip your food waste at a holding site in Ruislip. Dave, BioGen We bring all your food waste to Biogen’s local anaerobic digestion plant. I monitor the tanks in which microorganisms break down your food waste to produce biogas. Andy, Graham and John, BioGen We monitor the engines fuelled by the biogas. It’s a very clean way of generating electricity, which we export to the national grid.

  • 30. H arrow may not be brimming with top-flight sports teams – but at youth level, our teams are feared across the capital! Harrow’s young stars did us proud again at this year’s London Youth Games – with both the boys’ basketball team and girls’ hockey team striking gold. The boys outlasted Haringey in a tight semi-final that went to extra time, before storming past Westminster with a stirring comeback in the final to see them lift the trophy. England youth star Sesan Russell, 16, is one of the team tipped for the very top. “Basketball was what I enjoyed the most Harrow’s young sport stars strike gold! Harrow MVP and wanted to do for the future. Hopefully I can play collegiate level basketball in the United States and then play professional basketball either in Europe or United States.” The girls, meanwhile, began as underdogs, but tore up the form book - jumping from a 16th place ranking to wrestle the crown of champions from Wandsworth in an exciting final. And the victories kept on coming – with individual golds in swimming and judo, a silver for the tennis team and a brace of bronzes for trampolining and boys’ handball. Harrow finished a brilliant 17th overall (up from 21st the previous year). HARROW’S MEDALISTS Basketball Hockey Swimming Judo Tennis Handball Trampolining 30 Harrow People
