Y
et again it seems September
brought us very welcome
sunshine and high
temperatures to prepare us for the
Winter months ahead.....
It seems to me that somewhere
along the line our seasons have got mixed up and we enjoy
warmer weather in the months of August and September –
even Mother Nature is confused as many flowers have
started to bloom again!
Another wonderful highlight in September took place in
my own family when Mum celebrated her 90th birthday on
the 4th. Myself and my brother Mark put on a birthday
party for her and the huge attendance of family and friends
reflected how popular Mum is.
I thought to myself the other day ‘Wow, my mother is
now 90 years old and I will be 60 in a couple of months –
time is flying by at a frightening speed......
I think we tend to take our lives for granted and many
folk sometimes get stuck in their daily routines – go to
work, enjoy a bit of TV and then off to bed is the norm.
My motto is think of things you would love to do, write
them down, and then make them happen if possible. My
dear brother Mark always tells everyone a line from an old
song of yesteryear – ‘Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You
Think!” I believe these are very meaningful words...
I would just like to end with a sincere call to all
Uttoxeter residents and indeed other towns and villages to
pick up their GB bunting and banners and take them along
to our Olympic 2016 hero Adam Peaty’s Open Top Bus
Parade on October 1st. Adam and his family will be waving
to many thousands of local folk on a very long route
around Uttoxeter so don’t miss this opportunity to join in
the celebrations...
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The Voice colour
magazine.

Cheadle’s Joan Titterton celebrated her 90th birthday recently in style - with the help of family
and friends!
Joan’s two sons Nigel (pictured left) and Mark (pictured right) put on a birthday party she
will always remember with over 90 guests enjoying a wonderful night at Cheadle Cricket
Club. Joan must be one of the most sociable 90 year olds in the country as she still enjoys lots
of holidays each year, especially cruising the Mediterraean, and is also a player for Cheadle
CC in the Cheadle and District Domino League! Joan loves her family and friends and she
says the secret of attaining her 90th birthday is ‘a tot of whisky!’

T
he opportunity to educate other people’s
children is our privilege and brings with it a
huge responsibility to make sure that we
provide your sons and daughters with the
opportunities they require to achieve happiness and
success in their future lives. We are awaiting
confirmation that results will confirm Thomas
Alleyne’s place in the top 10 % of schools
nationally for student progress.
Over 66% of Thomas Alleyne’s Students gained
5A*-C including English and Maths - the highest
achievement in the school’s history and countering
a national fall in pass rates. Many students gained
amazing results with 4 students attaining at least
10 A* grades. 36 students gained at least 8 GCSEs
at A/A* and over half our students achieved at least
one grade at A/A*.
A high proportion of students achieved
exceptional A-level results, with 48% of all grades
being achieved at grades A*/B and a quarter of all
grades surpassing this with grades A*/A. Perhaps
most importantly the pass rate was 98% which has
once again enabled students to continue secure top
university places and Higher Apprenticeships in
companies such as Rolls Royce.
Vocational subjects have continued to secure
superb results which will place students in the top
1% nationally for their achievement.
As we welcome our new Head Boy Sam
Haywood and Head Girl Georgie Cann to their
roles in our school we are thrilled that the outgoing
Head Boy and Head Girl secured places at
Universities of their choice.
Academic success is important in our school,
however along with it we are passionate in
providing opportunities to ensure students have
chance to develop skills in teamwork,
independence, resilience and creativity. A group of
intrepid explorers returned with memories they will
never forget from Tanzania. Over 50 community-
minded Year 11 students took part in the National
Citizenship project, spending time in a local
University, raising significant amounts for charity
and completing a range of outdoor activities.
Experiences like this give our students the
opportunity to understand the world around them
a little better and also helps them foster confidence,
tolerance and perseverance.
This term we officially opened our new Maths
facility – providing state of the art classrooms for
our students to study this highly successful subject
at our school.
On the 5th October we welcome prospective
parents/carers to our annual Open Evening. In
addition to the open evening we will be holding
school tours where parents can join our senior
team during the school day.

Lark in the Park
Not such great weather for ducks
T
he organisers of the annual Lark in the Park in
Uttoxeter saw the funny side when a duck race
had to be cancelled because of wet weather.
The downpour at the end of the event on the
Saturday of the August bank holiday weekend
followed an afternoon of sunshine and some cloud.
But when the heavens opened, the field soon cleared
of people. With no audience and in a thunderstorm, it
was decided to abandon the launch of plastic ducks on
Picknalls Brook and draw the winning tickets from a
hat instead.
Gary Hudson, of Uttoxeter Lions Club, who run the
event, said: “The duck race is usually a bit of fun at the
end of the afternoon, but with no one there to enjoy
it there was no point putting all the ducks in the water
and then having to fish them all out again at the end
of the course.”There was an announcement to explain
what happened, and all the winners have now been
notified and received their prizes.
Before the rain, hundreds of local people had
enjoyed an afternoon of fairground rides, sideshows,
charity stalls and arena entertainment. Most of the
entertainment was free including archery which
proved very popular. A mini quad bike course also drew
large crowds.
Lark in the Park is a free family fun day at the end
of the school summer holidays, funded by East Staffs
Borough Council. The Lions and other charities raise
thousands of pounds for local causes at the event.

Stafford’s
ORJ Solicitors
Intellectual
Property
litigation
case featured
in new series
of BBC’s Fake
Britain
A
client of Stafford
based ORJ Solicitors
has been featured in
the first episode of the new
BBC series of Fake Britain.
The programme detailed
the case of Whitby
Morrison, the UK’s largest
manufacturer of ice cream
vans, whose flagship
product, The Mondial, had
been unlawfully copied by
Leeds based Yorkshire
Specialist Vehicles Ltd.
(YSVL).
The case, which came to
the High Court late in
2014, was successfully
handled by ORJ’s
Intellectual Property
experts, a team led by
Managing Partner, Patrick
Tedstone.
Mr Tedstone
commented, “In 2006,
Whitby Morrison developed
a new ice cream van called
the Mondial (protected by a
UK registered design). In
March 2011 YSVL
commissioned Whitby
Morrison to convert a van
into a Mondial and
subsequently used that to
produce at least 30 copies,
which they subsequently
sold through their business.
When this became apparent
to Whitby in 2014 they
subsequently appointed
ORJ to handle their case in
light of our considerable
Intellectual Property
experience.
“We subsequently built a
case that was heard in the
High Court, the result being
that YSVL we found to have
clearly infringed our client’s
Trade Mark. This became
one of the most talked
about IP cases in the legal
profession and subsequently
attracted the attention of
the BBC’s Fake Britain
production team. I was
delighted to have the
opportunity to explain the
background to the case on
camera. Litigation involving
trade mark infringement, IP
and copyright can be
extremely complicated but
it’s an area where we have
considerable expertise and,
as a result, we are often
called upon to advise
businesses on how to
protect their Intellectual
Property,” Patrick added.”

More students than ever
achieving the top grades
at A Level.
Moorlands Sixth Form College
Attlee Road, Cheadle, Staffordshire ST10 1LL
Tel: 01538 483922 • E-Mail: office@moorlandscollege.co.uk • www.moorlandscollege.co.uk
We have recorded our best ever A2 results with over
one in five students achieving an A or A*. Students
have secured their places at many prestigious
universities with 100% pass rate. A sample from
students from the three feeder schools include:
Gemma Mills (A* A* A) who is going to read law at
Oxford. Farrah Barber (A*A*A B) who is going to
read international relations with Russian. Robert
Mapperson (A*A*A A) who is going to read
mathematics, Rachael Hollins (A*A B) who is going
to read sociology, Will Wright (A*A B B) who is going
to study mechanical engineering and Rebecca
Pearson (A* A B) who is going to read law.
In addition, we are proud of the achievements of
our students who have achieved high grades in their
BTEC and CAMTECH Level 3 courses. Over 70% of
all Year 13 students achieved Distinction* which is
an exceptional result for the College, students and
teachers. Many students undertook a mixture of
vocational and A level courses. For example, Casey
Plant achieved Distinction* in health and social care,
A in psychology and B in biology. As every year,
there are too many students who have performed
exceptionally well to all be named. Students in
receipt of bursary funding have reached their full
potential and all our students have been given a
strong foundation to move forward successfully to
their post 18 pathway.
Students in Year 12 continue to make good
progress, exceeding the national A-E rate with a
significant increase in results from 2015.
Mrs Clare Dodson concluded: we have excellent
students, teachers and support staff who work very
well together as a team with the ultimate aim of
raising aspirations and obtaining the best results
possible. For the past few years results and the
College remain one of the top performing sixth
forms in the whole of Staffordshire and the results
reflect that we have embedded the new reformed A
Levels and our students maximise their academic
potential at the Sixth Form. We are delighted to be
able to offer a wide range of both A Level and
vocational subjects with up to 11 hours teaching per
subject per fortnight. Furthermore all Year 12
students have successfully completed the first year
of their Masters at Moorlands enrichment
programme in a wide range of activities with all
students trained in CPR. Any parent or student
wishing to have a tour of the College with student
leaders and ambassadors, please contact the
College on 01538 483922.
Mrs Clare Dodson, Senior Leader of the College, stated how
delighted she was with the students and their outstanding results

P
ainsley Catholic College has an
Olympic double to celebrate!
Not only has its former student,
Adam Peaty, achieved Olympic Gold
but its Year 11 students have broken
Painsley’s records with a set of truly
outstanding GCSE results with 88%
of the year 11 students at the non-
selective academy achieving 5 A*-C
grades including English and Maths.
Furthermore, a record-breaking
number of Painsley students have
exceeded the level of progress
expected of children at secondary
level. The results confirm Painsley’s
place as number 1 in Staffordshire
and Stoke-on-Trent (as detailed in the
Real Schools Guide 2016). Mr
Stephen Bell, Principal at the College
said, “I am delighted to report these
outstanding results. As Adam Peaty,
our former student and Gold
Olympian proved, hard work
certainly pays off and our staff and
students deserve a Gold medal for
such a wonderful effort! The results
secure the College’s reputation as a
centre of excellence where children
are happy and
successful in a
caring, studious
and disciplined
environment. I
am also most
grateful to the
parents and
directors for
their wonderful
support during
the year.”
More places
are on offer for
September 2017
and parents are encouraged to apply
for a place to secure a fantastic
education for their child which will
set them up for the rest of their lives.
Children from all faiths and none are
welcome to apply. The closing date

School application online via the

Painsley Catholic College
continues to claim the number one
spot when it comes to exam results,
pupil progress and the quality of
teaching. Education minister Nick
Gibb recently praised the Cheadle
School after being named among the
top 100 state comprehensive in
England. Painsley achieved this after
80% of GCSE pupils gained A* to C
passes in English, maths and at least
three other GCSE subjects last
summer. However Painsley is a lot
more than just a training ground for
young people’s academic progress
and success.
Painsley is also heavily involved in
training and inspiring the next
generation of teachers and trialling
new techniques in the classroom.
Working alongside North
Staffordshire schools as part of a
Maths Hub, it has been researching
and exploring how to transform
maths teaching by offering Shanghai-
style lessons as well as traditional
style lessons. Principal Stephen Bell
said they aimed to ‘work tirelessly to
ensure that every child’s ambitions
and God-given talents’ were
recognised. Pupils are encouraged to
perform in musical groups and taking
their learning out to the Peak District
in some subject trips. The school can
also draw on some successful
Painsley alumni as role models,
including the explorer Levison Wood,
who presented the TV series Walking
The Nile. Also former student Adam
Peaty, Olympic Gold medallist and
world record holder.
Painsley has more than 1100
pupils and has a joint post-16 centre
with several other partner schools
called Moorlands Sixth Form College.
In a message to parents on the
schools website, Mr Bell said “I am
blessed to have an outstanding staff,
outstanding directors, outstanding
support from parents and parishes
and, crucially, outstanding and
respectful students”. However
Painsley does not rest and continues
to look for new challenges. Being one
of the first schools in Staffordshire to
set up a multi-academy trust, which
is run in partnership with six
Catholic primary schools across the
Staffordshire Moorlands. This
partnership helps share strengths
and pool their resources to plan a
smooth transition for pupils as they
make the move from primary to
secondary education.

changed his uniform and now drives out
dirt and grime as opposed to rolling in it.
Ian North, 55 years old, a local lad from Barlaston
has seen a niche in the market and is plugging it
with Zero Dry Time Ltd, a carpet and upholstery
cleaning system that leaves no residue, does not
need water and no soggy ‘dog’ smell.
‘The lessons I learned whilst serving in the
Royal Marines has stood me in good stead’ said
Ian. ‘Never leaving an area until the job is done
and done right has proved invaluable in
completing a task. If there is a stain on your sofa
or carpet that can be removed, I’ll continue to
remove it until it’s been completely eliminated.
Something I learned years ago in training. I can
remove stains nobody else can.’
With over 50 years in development, the Zero
Dry Time cleaning system is ready to use as soon
as soon as the operator leaves. Carpets are not
designed to get wet. Dry cleaning them means they
stay cleaner for longer and with organic cleaning
products, they are non toxic for family and pets.
Everything is stain guarded as a matter of course.
Ian goes on “my results are exceptional and
consistent and that’s what drew me to this. I was
taught attention to detail in week one of
Commando training and has remained with me
ever since.”

African Adventure at Thomas
Alleyne’s High School
I
n early July, 23 students and 2 staff left
Thomas Alleyne’s to head for
Southern Tanzania for our World
Challenge Expedition. In the first week
we completed an acclimatisation trek
around the Baobab valley where we saw
rural Tanzania. There were several heart-
warming moments when walking
through a local village, the children there
were so happy to see us and walked up to
us to simply hold our hands. By the end
of the walk nobody had a hand free, some
boys played football whilst the girls asked
for our hairbands, showing the
similarities between us.
We then moved on to our projects in
which we went to primary schools to help
build new classrooms and teachers’
houses. We raised £4000 each before
going and some of this money was used
to pay for the masons to start the building
work. The lessons learnt from our time at
the schools were overwhelming, their
desire to learn was truly something
remarkable.
Following the completion of the
project we moved on to complete an
ascent of Rungwe Mountain. It was
beautiful from the height of 3000m and
an accomplishment we are all proud of.
Then came the time we had all been
looking forward to - Zanzibar and the
stunning Kipepeo Beach.

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
I
love hearing tales about the characters
and occurrences in Uttoxeter in the
past. One such incident that I found
amusing that might appeal to you the
readers of my column and especially the
footballers of the area was related to me
recently by my old mate and fellow
columnist of this fine community
magazine “Razza Astbury”.
Razza often calls in to see me and
spins a few good yarns about times past
in the town and this particular time he
came in with photographic evidence to
back up his tale.
Over 40 years ago back in 1969 a
local football team namely Shell Mex &
BP had a tremendously successful season
not only winning the Burton & District
Football League and were undefeated all
season but also won the Uttoxeter
Challenge Trophy.
Razza at the time was still active in the
local football scene and commented on
their huge successes that it was all down
to luck and he could pick a side that
would wipe the floor with them (typical
“Razza”!).
Razza’s challenge was taken up by the
Shell Mex BP Football side and a friendly
match was organised to boost the funds
of the town’s carnival fund in 1969.
Razza gathered up his band of football
players using his skills and knowledge of
all of the local cream players of past days,
calling his side “The Uttoxeter Over 30’s
Representative Team.
The match took place and I suppose
by now that you want to know the
outcome of Razza’s outlandish statement.
Razza’s side won 4 - 3. Say no more!!!

Q
uestion: Where in Uttoxeter can you go to
get help/advice with Attendance
Allowance (a benefit for people over 65
who need help with personal care i.e. washing,
dressing and eating), Alzheimer’s support,
lymphoedema care, bereavement support, carers
support, plus receive reflexology and also learn
how to knit?
Answer: Holly Road Supportive Care Centre, 2
Hermitage Gardens, Holly Road, Uttoxeter ST14
7DT.
Recently I was having a conversation with a
friend about his
mother and how when
she was getting older,
she needed more
support, but that he
had no idea where to
go for it, at the time I
didn’t know about the
Supportive Care
Centre, but I wish I
had.
If he had dropped
into the centre, any
time between 9am –
5pm Monday to
Friday, then he could
have been advised by
the Centre coordinator,
Michelle Vodden,
exactly where to go for
help. For instance, on
Fridays, every other
week, between 10.30-
12.30 he could have
seen an advisor from
Age UK. They run the
drop in service at
Holly Road and to
date have helped the
older generation of
Uttoxeter to gain
£67,000 in benefits that they otherwise wouldn’t
have known about. Things like Attendance
Allowance, Pension Credits and Carers Allowance.
The support does not end there, every month
(3rd Wednesday) the Alzheimers Society run a
dementia support clinic, which gives local families
affected by dementia the chance to speak to a
specialist dementia advisor who can help them
make sure they have the right support in place.
And if you are a carer, which is a huge
responsibility and can be very isolating too, then
you can go to the centre each week on a
Wednesday between 1.30pm – 3.30pm for a coffee
and a chat about anything you want to talk about.
Michelle Vodden explained that the drop in allows
people to have some time away from caring for
their relative and chat to people who truly
understand the joys and lows of being a carer. Plus
they swap tips on how to navigate the systems that
are sometimes very complicated and daunting too.
For instance, my friends mum needed a wet room
for bathing, but how do you find out about how
to get that done in your house? I
wouldn’t have the first clue as to
where to start, but the supportive
element of this centre, means that you
will be given advice and contacts to
call, so that you know how to get a
wet room installed.
The lymphoedema support is
wonderful. (Lymphoedema is a
chronic (long-term) condition that
causes swelling in the body’s tissues.
It can affect any part of the body, but
usually develops in the arms or legs.)
The centre offers local people affected
by the condition the opportunity to
attend a nurse-led clinic locally rather
than have to travel miles to receive
support.
If you have been diagnosed with
an illness, are caring for someone or
have recently been bereaved then you
may meet the centre’s criteria to have
a block of complementary therapy
treatments at the centre, for instance
Indian Head Massage, Reflexology
and Reiki. All these situations can be
very sad and confusing and taking
time out to give yourself something,
like a session of Reiki, can help in a
small way to get you through. All you
have to do is contact the centre and
Michelle can advise you if you meet the eligibility
criteria and what to do next.
Regardless of whether a family has been seen
by the centre’s partner hospices or not, if you have
experienced a bereavement, this could be recently
or a while ago, then a Bereavement Help Point is
run every Monday from 10.30am – 12.30 so that
you can talk about your loved one, have a cup of
tea and be listened to, or just have the cup of tea
and feel comforted by being out of the house and
away from emptiness that grief brings, knowing
that it passes, but having somewhere to go can
help. If you feel you need further help to come to
terms with your loss, then there are counselling
services locally, including the Dove Service in Stoke
that can help and Michelle Vodden can set up the
contact for you.
However if you are feeling isolated and just
want to go and be sociable then the Craft Group
on a Thursday between 2pm -4pm is a really
wonderful group, they recently knitted jumpers for
the teddy bears they give out to children supported
by St Giles Hospice and are currently planning
their next project, so why not turn off the TV and
go along.
Michelle Vodden explained that as the centre is
still new, they are still developing ideas and one
that is being considered is making a small peaceful
area in the garden to the side of the centre, so that
it can be used by everyone to sit and take time out
from life and be enjoyed. You know that gardening
is my hobby and to have somewhere to go and feel
peaceful is essential for me.
The Redfern Museum in Uttoxeter has also
become involved and runs sessions where people
can talk about the history of Uttoxeter and
reminisce about how it used to be. It’s great for
people with dementia, as most often they
remember things way back, but not recent events.
So how is this all possible? It is because St Giles
Hospice and Katharine House Hospice decided
that Uttoxeter needed somewhere that you can go
to get some support for a range of issues. They set
up Holly Road, along with the Heath Big Local,
and the Hermitage Charitable Trust, so that
Uttoxeter has a supportive care centre that really
can help to sign post you to what you need to do,
where you need to go, when you are lost and don’t
know which way to turn. Michelle Vodden, who is
the coordinator, is an exceptional women, I was so
impressed by her dedication and her wealth of
knowledge about all the systems that people have
to negotiate, she is also hugely compassionate and
truly understands that sometimes in life, we all
need is a helping hand to guide you in the right
direction. Uttoxeter is a better place for this centre
and for Michelle, her skills and determination to
continue to build a support system for people is
inspiring.

JCB engineer
braves the

Macmillan
Cancer Support
A
fter returning from a
road trip around Europe,
JCB Engineer David
Graham needed a haircut – so
decided to take the drastic but
generous step of having it all
shaved off for charity.
David, 23, had his chin-
length locks lopped off by
colleagues to raise money for
Macmillan Cancer Support
through its Brave the Shave
campaign.The Electronic and
Electrical Systems Engineer, who
works at the JCB Compact
Products factory, in Cheadle,
has set himself a £300
fundraising target, and with the
help of family and friends is well
on course to achieve that.
David, who lives in Rocester,
said: “During JCB’s three-week
summer shutdown I went on a
road trip around central Europe
and when I arrived back I
realised it was time for a
haircut. I normally have it fairly
long and if I don’t style it, it is
about chin length. However, I
saw a poster for the Macmillan
Brave the Shave campaign and
decided to go for it.
“It is a really good cause
and I thought I could also raise
awareness for the campaign
among my fellow employees
and encourage more people to
join in and have a go. All my
friends, family and work
colleagues have been really
supportive and pledged a lot of
money to encourage me to have
it all shaved off. I’d like to thank
everyone who got involved and
made a donation.”
The head shave took place
at the factory, with employees
taking it in turn to cut off a
handful of hair for an extra
pledge of money. Finally, the
shears came out and David was
given a very close shave.
David said: “After the event
I did not have access to a mirror,
so I took a selfie on my phone. I
was a bit shocked at my
appearance but I guess I will get
used to it. I will grow my hair
back but probably not as long
as it was before. The main thing
is it is all about raising money
for a good cause.”
People can still donate to
the cause by visiting David’s

How often should you wash your hair?
W
ill daily washing dry out your hair? or
clean itself? We definitely wash our hair
more than we did a generation ago. For
many of us it’s more likely to be a daily occurrence
than a once a week event.
But do we even need to bother?
Opinions differ
It’s not a cop-out but the correct answer is it
depends on who you ask and on your hair!
If you have fine hair it’s more likely to look
limp the day after a wash so you may want to wash
it more frequently.
For curly and coarse hair every 3 days or so
may be a better idea.
Some people find their hair is more manageable
and looks better the day after they’ve washed it as
it’s too soft and floppy on the day itself.
Hair that has been coloured or processed may
need less washing as oil doesn’t travel so far down
the hair shaft so it tends to be more dry on the ends
and need shampooing less.
Choosing the right product
The key is to use the right shampoo and
conditioner for your hair. If you feel the need to
wash it everyday use Moroccanoil smooth or
volume shampoo.
If it’s looking flat and limp the day after
washing you may be using a shampoo and
conditioner which is too rich and heavy for your
hair.
Many people believe washing everyday will
strip the hair of natural oils.
Whilst this used to be true many years ago
when shampoos were more basic, today most
brands replenish lost moisture.
A lot of research and development goes into
shampoo and conditioners, so pick the range
specifically for your hair type, all of the Spires team
will advise you on the best products to use.
The styling circle
It can be a catch-22 situation. You wash your
hair every day but need to use more product to get
it to look good so you need to wash it again to
remove the buildup.
While frequent washing may not cause damage,
it’s the subsequent styling that does.
Daily exposure to hairdryers, straighteners and
styling products is going to put a strain on your
hair.
For this reason unless you have hair you can
simply wash and leave to dry naturally, you should
not be washing your hair every day.
If you feel your hair looks greasy, use some
Moroccanoil dry shampoo in between washes.
Put in more than it takes
You need to be pretty hardcore to give up
shampoo and conditioner as our hair-washing
regimes play a big part in our lives.
Our hair has a direct impact on how we feel
about ourselves.
Shampoos these days give more than they take!
The focus is on keeping the hair healthy by pushing
in proteins or moisture rather than just being a
detergent.
So if you pick the right product for your hair
and wash it whenever you feel it needs it there’s
nothing to get into a lather about!

Baby Sensory
by Laura Johnson
Baby Olympics
T
he Rio 2016 Olympics have been the most
successful overseas games for Team GB since
the games began. The athletes dedicate their
lives to their sport and train for years to reach their
peak.
Exercise is so important to all of us and it’s
never too early to start stretching, balancing and
moving. Babies can really benefit from regular
movement to help them to learn how their bodies
move and to help develop strength and co-
ordination. Exercise is especially important for the
development of the brain which grows in size and
complexity throughout a babies first year. Exercise
helps to promote the growth of new brain cells that
help with memory and learning and can help to
promote connections between brain cells too.
From birth a baby works really hard to be
strong enough to lift their head, by four months
most babies can push up on their forearms when
they are on their tummies and can hold their head
steady. By 7-8 months most babies can sit up
without support and some may have already
started to crawl.
At Baby Sensory we provide lots of activities to
help your baby to develop and move, as parents
and carers there are lots of things we can do to help
them reach these developmental milestones. From
birth helping baby to exercise by providing regular
massage can help blood flow and help baby to
have a more stable heart and breathing rate.
Tummy time is a vital part of a baby’s early
development as it not only helps to strengthen the
neck and shoulders it also helps baby to crawl and
then move on to walking. There is a wealth of
evidence to suggest crawling helps to stimulate the
right and left hemispheres of the brain, helps co-
ordinate both sides of the body and with eye
development too. If your baby isn’t a fan of lying
on the floor on their tummies why not try lying
them on a soft ball or beach ball, hold them firmly
with both hands, it will give them a brand new
view of the world and allows them to kick out their
legs and practise their swimming strokes too.
As babies grow introducing balls and play can
help with hand eye co-ordination and throwing
and rolling skills. Why not sit your baby opposite
you and roll a play ball or soft ball to them and
encourage them to roll it or push it back to you.
Once they get the hang of it will provide hours of
fun. As baby learns to pull them self up and stand
you can have lots of fun kicking the ball too.
Give it ago, your baby might be winning a Gold
at the Olympics in years to come.
Chocolate and Salted Caramel Drizzle
Cake
L
ast week was my daughters 18th Birthday.
We planned to have a party in the garden.
My husband had just finished building a pizza
oven, so we all made our own pizzas and they were
delicious. We followed the pizzas with a four layer
chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream,
drizzled all over with salted caramel and decorated
with chocolate hearts.
To make the cake you will need the following -
12oz light muscovado sugar
4 eggs
8 fl oz milk
8 fl oz oil
2 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp black treacle
12 oz self raising flour
2oz good quality cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
For the frosting you will need
500g Icing sugar
250g unsalted butter
260g Salted caramel (I used M&S Salted
Caramel Sauce)
Plus 260g Salted Caramel Sauce to decorate
Chocolate Hearts
Edible glitter
This cake looks impressive, but is very simple
to make. First preheat your oven to 160 C.
Grease and line four 18cm (7”) sandwich tins.
Blend together the sugar, eggs, oil, golden syrup
and black treacle and mix thoroughly. Add the
sieved flour, baking powder and cocoa and mix
until you have a smooth batter.
Divide this mixture between your four cake tins
and bake for approximately 25 - 30 minutes until
the cake springs back when lightly pressed. Leave
to cool in tins for 10 mins then turn out onto wire
rack. I leave on the greaseproof paper until I am
ready to ice, as the cakes keep moist.
While the cake is cooling, make your
buttercream by mixing the softened butter with the
sieved icing sugar to make a smooth frosting. Next
add the Salted Caramel Sauce - I always made my
own salted caramel, but if in a hurry this is a
fantastic subsitute and a perfect consistency for the
drizzle on top of the cake!
Remove the greaseproof paper from your cake
and sandwich it together with the buttercream.
Spread the remainder over the top and sides of the
cake with a spatula or palette knife, giving a
smooth finish.
Finally warm your remaining Salted Caramel
Sauce and drizzle all over the top of your cake,
allowing it to drizzle down the sides. You can then
decorate your cake with whatever you like, i.e.
chocolate shards, sweets, fruit, etc. I used some
chocolate hearts and sprinkled on a little edible
glitter.
The cake was a great success, perfect for a
special birthday. Happy Birthday Daisy!

Banking... Take Two
W
e recently ordered a replacement
needleplate for our elderly sewing
machine. When it came it was not correct;
we returned it and the suppliers promised us a
refund. Looking online to check, I found that they
had not done us a refund; they had charged us again
for the first one. After an email they were very
apologetic and the refund was on my statement next
day. No problem !
But: Shock ! Horror ! On the statement were
three card transactions that rang no bells at all. Two
of them were to Windeln.de .... looking like
Mothercare in Germany... and the other to
Pharmacy Central in Australia. It was a total over
£300.
Next day, off to see those nice girls in HSBC in
Uttoxeter to get it sorted. Before I went, another
check on my statement revealed that the Australian
site had refunded the cash. Anyway...
“Really sorry. We can’t help. You need to phone
the number on the back of your card.Would you like
to use our phone? Dial 01”
So I pulled up a stool at the desk in the corner
and dialled 01. We started going through the menu,
and then the security checks. Well... do you know
your telephone security number from memory ? The
call sounded just like calling from home so I
returned to Alton. After the security checks I was
advised that waiting time was 25 minutes. Cup of
tea.
“Well.” I thought, “I bet the bank phone is a
hotline. Must be quicker”.
So I went back to Uttox to have another go on
their phone.
“Would I be better going into Derby to a Premier
Branch ?” ... remembering from last time that
Uttoxeter could not cancel an account but that
Longton could ... since when Longton has closed.
“No. Card accounts are done exclusively by
phone”.
OK. So I resumed my perch in the corner and
dialled the number, now having details to hand. It
was not easy to hear above the usual chat and the
overhead music. I requested less music for a few
minutes.
Linda came round to explain that the music was
automatic; it came on when the bank opened and
went off when it shut. She kindly offered me the use
of the quiet office, but by this time I had discovered
that waiting time was again 25 minutes. So much for
a Hot Line.
It was time for another cuppatea and a walk in
the country. Diversion.... En route I called into Nat
West to pay in a cheque for wifey. I was invited to a
private demo of the paying-in machine.
“It’s so much quicker. Press start; follow the
instructions onscreen; put the cheque and the pay-
in slip together through this trapdoor. Job done. “
But...
It spat them out again! After 3 attempts we went
back to the desk where a rubber stamp did the job
in 10 secs.
Perhaps the phoneline would have less traffic in
the evening? At 7.0pm I tried again. Advised waiting
time was 25 minutes. However, this time I was
prepared with an appropriate book ... “War &
Peace.”After more than one hour I got through to a
very apologetic, super-polite lady who sorted it out
brilliantly. She was satisfied that being 79, baby
shops were not on my agenda. Something told me
that she was not from Barnsley.
I asked, “Where are you speaking from?”
“Manila”. Can you believe it ? The Philippines is 7
hours in advance of our time. It was 3.15 am for her.
She told me that I would get a new card and that
next day their “Fraud Team” would phone to
confirm a few details. At 08.15 next day came the
call; one day later a new card arrived, and the money
was back on the statement. Exactly right. Now that’s
not bad is it ?
Sadly the Uttoxeter branch of HSBC is closing
on 11 November.
Jack’s nostalgic thoughts...

Former Painsley High School Woodwork Teacher
Have I got news for you
by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter
Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions
Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a
senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at
Staffordshire University.
Thanks for your comments - and a time for
reflection
Thanks to everybody who stopped me to
comment on last month’s column. The story of my
encounter with Bruce Springsteen obviously amused
or surprised a lot of you.
I don’t think I’ve ever had such a response to
anything I’ve written in the Voice. Strangers came up
to me and said they enjoyed it, which is really
rewarding.
It certainly proved that people read this
magazine. As a lifelong journalist, I’m heartened to
know that you still value the printed word, even if
in the case of the Voice you don’t pay for it.
There are plenty of magazines – both free and of
course paid-for – that are doing well, but they
represent only a tiny fraction of the output of
journalists like me. As I approach retirement, I
thought I’d offer a quick summary of the state of
British journalism, because this stuff matters – it’s
how you get told about what happens in the world.
And I’m often asked whether I would
recommend journalism as a career to young people,
particularly as none of us seems to want to pay for
news any more. We get it free online. So if people
won’t pay for news, does that mean there are no jobs
for journalists?
It’s a fair question, but based on wrong
assumptions in my view, because news is of no use
unless it can be trusted.
Who do you trust to tell you the news?
Most of my career was spent in broadcasting,
and most of that at the BBC. Broadcast news still has
a pretty strong reputation and I can’t see viewers and
listeners abandoning TV and radio for a while yet.
My opinion is partly based on the fact that the
online alternatives to broadcast news are so
unreliable.
Almost every headline on online sites is clickbait
– a teaser to get people to look at the story – and
very few of those headlines accurately reflect the
stories they’re supposed to be about. The second
click almost always leads to disappointment. In fact
that last sentence could be my motto for Internet
news sites.
TV and radio in the UK are, on the other hand,
legally required to be fair, accurate and balanced.
Despite complaints that they aren’t any of those
things, usually from politicians of all sides, my
experience is that they do a pretty good job of
avoiding bias and that they present most political
arguments fairly.
Newspapers on the other hand have no such
requirement for impartiality and I suspect they have
a much less certain future. As soon as the job of
relating factual information becomes secondary to
delivering political opinions, as it has for many of
the former Fleet Street papers, you, dear reader,
might as well go online, because the political
opinions there are twice as indignant, outrageous, or
even bigoted, and far more likely to make you laugh,
cheer or shout in indignant rage. And of course you
can chip in your own two penn’orth, whether you
know what you’re talking about or not.
I predict the further decline and eventual end of
newspapers, maybe within the next ten years, but
brighter prospects for trusted broadcasters.
The rise of PR and the need to oppose it
So what of the youngsters who want to be sports
or news reporters, or TV news presenters. Where are
the jobs for them?
Well, it’s true that there aren’t many jobs in local
newspapers, where I started, and as I said earlier
there will be even fewer - if any at all - in just a few
years from now. My first paper, the Walsall Observer,
went out of business a few years ago.
But there are jobs in the growing number of
online sites, most of which would benefit hugely
from an influx of trained journalistic talent.
And all manner of private and public sector
organisations are employing people with journalism
skills as their media and public relations
departments expand to take advantage of the
opportunities the Internet offers to get their message
across. Some football clubs today employ more
journalists than a lot of small newspapers. Indeed
there are Staffordshire University graduates working
in at least 15 of the 20 Premier League clubs.
And, because control of the means of distributing
information to the masses is no longer the exclusive
preserve of elite media organisations, there is,
paradoxically, a need for more journalists in trusted,
traditional news providers - like the BBC - to
challenge the often partisan messages from the new
wave of PR specialists.
So there is a bright future for journalists and
journalism, even if I’ll be playing less of a part in it.
I’m retiring from teaching journalism but that
won’t mean I stop being a journalist or a writer. In
fact I’m open to freelance offers. No job too small.
Advert over.
And I will still be writing in the Voice, for as long
as the editor will have me, and I’ll be trying to
deliver a mostly positive message. Next month for
example, I should have good news about prices for
the annual Uttoxeter Lions bonfire on November
5th. Watch this space.

A
fter seeing my fellow columnist Neil Baker’s
article in the last edition of The Voice. I was
delighted to read of the thoroughly deserved
tribute paid to him by Crewe Alexandra in
recognition of his services to local football over many
years.
It’s perhaps fitting that I should record a few
anecdotes about Bake as I have known and respected
him for a long time.
I am proud to say I have been both his manager
and his playing colleague over the years. I remember
him playing for Kingsley YC in the Leek and District
Cup Final many years ago at Boltons Sports Ground..
This is a game Bake has mentioned previously and
one which Kingsley YC won. I hadn’t been able to
watch many of the Youth team’s games before the
final as I was playing on Saturdays myself but, as the
manager along with Pat Keates on the day, I recall
Bake played in a side in which I didn’t think there was
a single weakness right through from Phil Alcock in
goal to Ray Hulson up top. I do believe Bake has
retained a photograph of the team taken on the day.
The only sad note now is that Ian Mellor, the captain
and a great player, is no longer with us. Although I
suppose most if not all of the lads were under age, we
went afterwards to the Blacksmiths at Kingsley Holt
until the early hours to celebrate the success. Even my
late dad, who was an avid football enthusiast and had
quite a lot to do with the running of the team,
celebrated with us, although I always thought until
then that he was teetotal.
A year or so after that, I went on to play with
Bake and I could see at the time that he was not only
a gifted player but also one with extraordinary
tactical awareness, although I must confess I never
thought then that football would be his career. Bake
would have been equally successful as a cricketer but,
as football was his first love, he had unfortunately to
sacrifice his cricketing career.
Although I went on later to play against him a few
times, injury unfortunately cut short his career as a
player and, as all readers know, he eventually went on
to manage Leek Town during the most successful
period in their history.
Knowing that I possessed the necessary
qualifications, Bake approached me when my playing
days were over and appointed me as his physio at
Leek Town, a position I thoroughly enjoyed until
Bake’s departure to Crewe under the renowned Dario
Gradi.
There are one or two amusing incidents I should
mention during my time as Bake’s physio which he
may remember. There was one time when we were
going to play at Burscough. Now I knew that
Burscough is a few miles inland from the coast and
when I saw the sea I wondered which way the coach
driver was taking us. It was not really my place to
question the route but we ended up at Formby ! We
then rushed to Burscough much too late for the
customary pre match warm up and, upon alighting
having already changed, had to run the gauntlet of an
irate and extremely derisory group of spectators
outside the ground awaiting our late arrival.
Another occasion was when the driver lost his
way to Irlam. I remember Bake remarking that this
wouldn’t have happened with Manchester United
under Sir Alex !
I can also remember going to Accrington Stanley
and, upon our departure, the spinning rear wheels of
the coach started sinking in to the shale car park. The
situation was only recovered by the whole team
getting off and pushing the vehicle clear so that we
got back safely.
Neither shall I forget the after match dressing
room atmosphere following a bad defeat at Winsford.
The players were apprehensive as to what Bake might
say when he made his way into the dressing room for
the post match inquest. Alan Smith was his assistant
at the time and he and Bake came in with the players
anticipating a real roasting. Not a single word was
uttered by Bake, Smithy or anyone else. You could
have heard a pin drop and the players changed in
absolute silence. The point had been made. Bake and
Smithy duly departed and it was not until then that
anything was said. I think it was either Andy Morgan
or Frank Sromek who made some amusing quip and
the gloom was suddenly lifted.
All happy memories. Bake of course eventually
went on to lead his team out at Wembley and the rest
is history as they say.
I hope Bake won’t mind me remarking upon what
I consider as one of his greatest strengths in
management which is his calmness under pressure
before the game and his willingness to take the time
to speak to anyone who wishes to speak to him.
When I was managing I couldn’t do with anyone
pestering me before the game but then I never
possessed the same qualities as Bake does.
Well, I’ve devoted the whole of this article to one
of my greatest and most respected mates in football,
but before close I should congratulate Checkley CC
on winning the Staffordshire Cup to add to their
Twenty/20 trophy. Cricket has finished and the
promotion and relegation issues have now been
resolved. Football takes over, although I won’t be
able to see as many Leek Town games this season for
reasons which a few readers and particularly another
fellow columnist will appreciate.

Club U13s
C
heckley Cricket Club U13s clinched the SMJCL Pairs League (Section
C) for the second consecutive year, after a convincing away victory at
Oakamoor in early August.
In a competitive league, it was Checkley’s consistency throughout the
season that saw them over the line, supported with many outstanding
individual performances with bat and ball.
Jon Dreher (Coach) stated: “Winning the league was a result of a lot of
hard work during coaching sessions; then being able to apply these skills in
games. The children were a joy to coach and their ability to carry out game
plans, for such a young team was outstanding!”
This achievement was one of Checkley’s many successes during their ‘Super
Summer’, as U9, U15 and U17 teams won league titles, with their U11s
finishing runners-up. In addition, many players represented older age groups,
including playing adult
cricket and representative
cricket for their district
and Staffordshire.
“Our successful player
development and ‘on-the-
field’ achievements in
Checkley’s junior teams
are the result of our
dedicated coaches and
children who want to
learn, and make
themselves better
cricketers,” stated Jon
Dreher.

ttoxeter Bulls Basketball Club took
over the sports hall at Uttoxeter Leisure
Centre on three afternoons for their
‘Summer Holiday Basketball Camp.’ Twenty
youngsters aged between nine and fifteen took
part in twelve hours of basketball training,
games and activities. Simon Griffiths co-
founder of Uttoxeter Bulls said, “The turnout
was terrific and we had a great crowd of lads
and one girl all eager to improve their game
and skill levels. Our special guest was, 6ft 10
inch tall, Harrison Gamble, UK International
and Leicester Riders player. He towered over
us and was certainly a hit with our young
players joining in a couple of our games and
then taking part in a question and answer
session.”
Joe Locker co-founder said, “Chris
Mountford CMB Skillz from Stoke also came
to one session and passed on techniques and
impressed everyone with his ball control. I
would like to thank John Sewell Garages on
Brookside Business Park for their sponsorship
and support for this Basketball Camp”. The
club will also be arranging a trip to see
Leicester Riders, the UK’s oldest professional
club, play in the autumn. Details will be
appearing on the Uttoxeter Bulls Twitter and
Facebook accounts.
There will be a video of the week’s activities

U
ttoxeter Cricket Club hosted their 3rd
annual Club Night recentl. The evening
featured players from Abbots Bromley CC,
Belper CC, Blunham CC, Cheadle CC, Ticknall
CC, Wistaston CC and Uttoxeter CC making up a
Chairman’s and President’s XI’s. A competitive
pink ball Twenty20 fixture kept the spectators
entertained. Likewise, they were able to enjoy a
BBQ, ice cream, games area, cask ale, a raffle,
commentary and music.
The President’s XI were asked to bat first. They
reached 133 all out off their allotted 20 overs. A
destructive 42 run a ball by Jack Stokes (WCC)
was the top score. Rory Middleton (UCC) was also
in the runs with 31 off 23 balls. Jonny Clewes
(CCC) 14 and Mick Hall (UCC) 12 played some
inventive shots and were the only other batsmen
to make double figures. With the ball, the stand out
performers were Johnny Pearson 3 for 13 (Belper
CC) and Dan Cotterill (UCC) 3 for 18. Also, Jacob
Mills (CCC) 1 for 7, Harry Degg (CCC) 1 for 8
and Skipper Ben Brown (UCC) 1 for 18 capped a
good all round bowling display for the Chairman’s
XI. Jake Ratcliffe (UCC) was unfortunate not to
pick up a wicket. A stunning running one handed
catch by Shaun Rashid (ABCC) dismissed danger
man Jimmy Sellers (CCC). The President’s XI
captain, Gavin Hall (UCC) felt that 133 was a
below par score.
In the chase, the Chairman’s XI won the game
at a canter by 6 wickets. Matthew Sellers’ (CCC)
42 off 19 balls set the tone for the innings. There
was some success for the bowlers; James Sellers 2
for 4 dismissed his brother Matthew following a
sharp slip catch from Ryan Day (CCC). Max
Hurst (Blunham CCC) 1 for 9 and Richard
Stewart (UCC) 1 for 17 bowled with some
discipline. Adam Johnson (UCC) 34 not out off 13
balls and Nick Crombie (TCC) 21 not out off 23
balls saw the game concluded after 14.4 overs.
Alan Bennett (UCC) was unfortunate not to break
the dominate last wicket partnership.
The club night enabled Uttoxeter Cricket Club
to showcase a good quality game of cricket played
in a good spirit. After the match, players and
spectators enjoyed a few drinks together. Also it
was an opportunity to wish two UCC players,
Dave Powell Jones and Josh Woolley happy 18th
birthdays. Thanks must go to all involved (there
are too many people to thank personally). We hope
to stage events like this in the future. Lastly the
game was kindly sponsored by Paul Walker and
the Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice.

All Rights Reserved. Copyright Community Voice Publications Ltd. Designed and Produced by noel@sergeantdesign.com Y et again it seems September brought us very welcome sunshine and high temperatures to prepare us for the Winter months ahead..... It seems to me that somewhere along the line our seasons have got mixed up and we enjoy warmer weather in the months of August and September – even Mother Nature is confused as many flowers have started to bloom again! Another wonderful highlight in September took place in my own family when Mum celebrated her 90th birthday on the 4th. Myself and my brother Mark put on a birthday party for her and the huge attendance of family and friends reflected how popular Mum is. I thought to myself the other day ‘Wow, my mother is now 90 years old and I will be 60 in a couple of months – time is flying by at a frightening speed...... I think we tend to take our lives for granted and many folk sometimes get stuck in their daily routines – go to work, enjoy a bit of TV and then off to bed is the norm. My motto is think of things you would love to do, write them down, and then make them happen if possible. My dear brother Mark always tells everyone a line from an old song of yesteryear – ‘Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think!” I believe these are very meaningful words... I would just like to end with a sincere call to all Uttoxeter residents and indeed other towns and villages to pick up their GB bunting and banners and take them along to our Olympic 2016 hero Adam Peaty’s Open Top Bus Parade on October 1st. Adam and his family will be waving to many thousands of local folk on a very long route around Uttoxeter so don’t miss this opportunity to join in the celebrations... I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The Voice colour magazine. We are awaiting confirmation that results will confirm Thomas Alleyne’s place in the top 10 % of schools nationally for student progress. Over 66% of Thomas Alleyne’s Students gained 5A*-C including English and Maths - the highest achievement in the school’s history and countering a national fall in pass rates. Many students gained amazing results with 4 students attaining at least 10 A* grades. 36 students gained at least 8 GCSEs at A/A* and over half our students achieved at least one grade at A/A*. A high proportion of students achieved exceptional A-level results, with 48% of all grades being achieved at grades A*/B and a quarter of all grades surpassing this with grades A*/A. Perhaps most importantly the pass rate was 98% which has once again enabled students to continue secure top university places and Higher Apprenticeships in companies such as Rolls Royce. Vocational subjects have continued to secure superb results which will place students in the top 1% nationally for their achievement. As we welcome our new Head Boy Sam Haywood and Head Girl Georgie Cann to their roles in our school we are thrilled that the outgoing Head Boy and Head Girl secured places at Universities of their choice. Academic success is important in our school, however along with it we are passionate in providing opportunities to ensure students have chance to develop skills in teamwork, independence, resilience and creativity. A group of intrepid explorers returned with memories they will never forget from Tanzania. Over 50 community- minded Year 11 students took part in the National Citizenship project, spending time in a local University, raising significant amounts for charity and completing a range of outdoor activities. Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to understand the world around them a little better and also helps them foster confidence, tolerance and perseverance. This term we officially opened our new Maths facility – providing state of the art classrooms for our students to study this highly successful subject at our school. On the 5th October we welcome prospective parents/carers to our annual Open Evening. • 10. Lark in the Park Not such great weather for ducks T he organisers of the annual Lark in the Park in Uttoxeter saw the funny side when a duck race had to be cancelled because of wet weather. The downpour at the end of the event on the Saturday of the August bank holiday weekend followed an afternoon of sunshine and some cloud. But when the heavens opened, the field soon cleared of people. With no audience and in a thunderstorm, it was decided to abandon the launch of plastic ducks on Picknalls Brook and draw the winning tickets from a hat instead. Gary Hudson, of Uttoxeter Lions Club, who run the event, said: “The duck race is usually a bit of fun at the end of the afternoon, but with no one there to enjoy it there was no point putting all the ducks in the water and then having to fish them all out again at the end of the course.”There was an announcement to explain what happened, and all the winners have now been notified and received their prizes. Before the rain, hundreds of local people had enjoyed an afternoon of fairground rides, sideshows, charity stalls and arena entertainment. Most of the entertainment was free including archery which proved very popular. A mini quad bike course also drew large crowds. Lark in the Park is a free family fun day at the end of the school summer holidays, funded by East Staffs Borough Council. The Lions and other charities raise thousands of pounds for local causes at the event. 10 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. The programme detailed the case of Whitby Morrison, the UK’s largest manufacturer of ice cream vans, whose flagship product, The Mondial, had been unlawfully copied by Leeds based Yorkshire Specialist Vehicles Ltd. (YSVL). The case, which came to the High Court late in 2014, was successfully handled by ORJ’s Intellectual Property experts, a team led by Managing Partner, Patrick Tedstone. Mr Tedstone commented, “In 2006, Whitby Morrison developed a new ice cream van called the Mondial (protected by a UK registered design). In March 2011 YSVL commissioned Whitby Morrison to convert a van into a Mondial and subsequently used that to produce at least 30 copies, which they subsequently sold through their business. When this became apparent to Whitby in 2014 they subsequently appointed ORJ to handle their case in light of our considerable Intellectual Property experience. “We subsequently built a case that was heard in the High Court, the result being that YSVL we found to have clearly infringed our client’s Trade Mark. This became one of the most talked about IP cases in the legal profession and subsequently attracted the attention of the BBC’s Fake Britain production team. I was delighted to have the opportunity to explain the background to the case on camera. Litigation involving trade mark infringement, IP and copyright can be extremely complicated but it’s an area where we have considerable expertise and, as a result, we are often called upon to advise businesses on how to protect their Intellectual Property,” Patrick added.” Everyone lovesTheVoice

Over 70% of all Year 13 students achieved Distinction* which is an exceptional result for the College, students and teachers. Many students undertook a mixture of vocational and A level courses. For example, Casey Plant achieved Distinction* in health and social care, A in psychology and B in biology. As every year, there are too many students who have performed exceptionally well to all be named. Students in receipt of bursary funding have reached their full potential and all our students have been given a strong foundation to move forward successfully to their post 18 pathway. Students in Year 12 continue to make good progress, exceeding the national A-E rate with a significant increase in results from 2015. Mrs Clare Dodson concluded: we have excellent students, teachers and support staff who work very well together as a team with the ultimate aim of raising aspirations and obtaining the best results possible. For the past few years results and the College remain one of the top performing sixth forms in the whole of Staffordshire and the results reflect that we have embedded the new reformed A Levels and our students maximise their academic potential at the Sixth Form. Not only has its former student, Adam Peaty, achieved Olympic Gold but its Year 11 students have broken Painsley’s records with a set of truly outstanding GCSE results with 88% of the year 11 students at the non- selective academy achieving 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths. Furthermore, a record-breaking number of Painsley students have exceeded the level of progress expected of children at secondary level. The results confirm Painsley’s place as number 1 in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (as detailed in the Real Schools Guide 2016). Mr Stephen Bell, Principal at the College said, “I am delighted to report these outstanding results. As Adam Peaty, our former student and Gold Olympian proved, hard work certainly pays off and our staff and students deserve a Gold medal for such a wonderful effort! The results secure the College’s reputation as a centre of excellence where children are happy and successful in a caring, studious and disciplined environment. I am also most grateful to the parents and directors for their wonderful support during the year.” More places are on offer for September 2017 and parents are encouraged to apply for a place to secure a fantastic education for their child which will set them up for the rest of their lives. Children from all faiths and none are welcome to apply. The closing date for parents to make their Secondary School application online via the Staffordshire County Council website is 31st October 2016 at the following address: www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education /schoolsandcolleges/admissions Painsley Catholic College continues to claim the number one spot when it comes to exam results, pupil progress and the quality of teaching. Education minister Nick Gibb recently praised the Cheadle School after being named among the top 100 state comprehensive in England. Painsley achieved this after 80% of GCSE pupils gained A* to C passes in English, maths and at least three other GCSE subjects last summer. However Painsley is a lot more than just a training ground for young people’s academic progress and success. Painsley is also heavily involved in training and inspiring the next generation of teachers and trialling new techniques in the classroom. Working alongside North Staffordshire schools as part of a Maths Hub, it has been researching and exploring how to transform maths teaching by offering Shanghai- style lessons as well as traditional style lessons. Principal Stephen Bell said they aimed to ‘work tirelessly to ensure that every child’s ambitions and God-given talents’ were recognised. Pupils are encouraged to perform in musical groups and taking their learning out to the Peak District in some subject trips. The school can also draw on some successful Painsley alumni as role models, including the explorer Levison Wood, who presented the TV series Walking The Nile. Also former student Adam Peaty, Olympic Gold medallist and world record holder. Painsley has more than 1100 pupils and has a joint post-16 centre with several other partner schools called Moorlands Sixth Form College. In a message to parents on the schools website, Mr Bell said “I am blessed to have an outstanding staff, outstanding directors, outstanding support from parents and parishes and, crucially, outstanding and respectful students”. However Painsley does not rest and continues to look for new challenges. Being one of the first schools in Staffordshire to set up a multi-academy trust, which is run in partnership with six Catholic primary schools across the Staffordshire Moorlands. This partnership helps share strengths and pool their resources to plan a smooth transition for pupils as they make the move from primary to secondary education. PhotographsbyCheadle&TeanTimes

If there is a stain on your sofa or carpet that can be removed, I’ll continue to remove it until it’s been completely eliminated. Something I learned years ago in training. I can remove stains nobody else can.’ With over 50 years in development, the Zero Dry Time cleaning system is ready to use as soon as soon as the operator leaves. Carpets are not designed to get wet. In the first week we completed an acclimatisation trek around the Baobab valley where we saw rural Tanzania. There were several heart- warming moments when walking through a local village, the children there were so happy to see us and walked up to us to simply hold our hands. By the end of the walk nobody had a hand free, some boys played football whilst the girls asked for our hairbands, showing the similarities between us. We then moved on to our projects in which we went to primary schools to help build new classrooms and teachers’ houses. We raised £4000 each before going and some of this money was used to pay for the masons to start the building work. The lessons learnt from our time at the schools were overwhelming, their desire to learn was truly something remarkable. Following the completion of the project we moved on to complete an ascent of Rungwe Mountain. It was beautiful from the height of 3000m and an accomplishment we are all proud of. Then came the time we had all been looking forward to - Zanzibar and the stunning Kipepeo Beach.

Lank’s Lore By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters I love hearing tales about the characters and occurrences in Uttoxeter in the past. One such incident that I found amusing that might appeal to you the readers of my column and especially the footballers of the area was related to me recently by my old mate and fellow columnist of this fine community magazine “Razza Astbury”. Razza often calls in to see me and spins a few good yarns about times past in the town and this particular time he came in with photographic evidence to back up his tale. Over 40 years ago back in 1969 a local football team namely Shell Mex & BP had a tremendously successful season not only winning the Burton & District Football League and were undefeated all season but also won the Uttoxeter Challenge Trophy. Razza at the time was still active in the local football scene and commented on their huge successes that it was all down to luck and he could pick a side that would wipe the floor with them (typical “Razza”!). Razza’s challenge was taken up by the Shell Mex BP Football side and a friendly match was organised to boost the funds of the town’s carnival fund in 1969. Razza gathered up his band of football players using his skills and knowledge of all of the local cream players of past days, calling his side “The Uttoxeter Over 30’s Representative Team. The match took place and I suppose by now that you want to know the outcome of Razza’s outlandish statement. Razza’s side won 4 - 3. Say no more!!! • 34. Ginny’s Community Corner by Ginny Gibson of Uttoxeter Q uestion: Where in Uttoxeter can you go to get help/advice with Attendance Allowance (a benefit for people over 65 who need help with personal care i.e. washing, dressing and eating), Alzheimer’s support, lymphoedema care, bereavement support, carers support, plus receive reflexology and also learn how to knit? Answer: Holly Road Supportive Care Centre, 2 Hermitage Gardens, Holly Road, Uttoxeter ST14 7DT. Recently I was having a conversation with a friend about his mother and how when she was getting older, she needed more support, but that he had no idea where to go for it, at the time I didn’t know about the Supportive Care Centre, but I wish I had. If he had dropped into the centre, any time between 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, then he could have been advised by the Centre coordinator, Michelle Vodden, exactly where to go for help. For instance, on Fridays, every other week, between 10.30- 12.30 he could have seen an advisor from Age UK. They run the drop in service at Holly Road and to date have helped the older generation of Uttoxeter to gain £67,000 in benefits that they otherwise wouldn’t have known about. Things like Attendance Allowance, Pension Credits and Carers Allowance. The support does not end there, every month (3rd Wednesday) the Alzheimers Society run a dementia support clinic, which gives local families affected by dementia the chance to speak to a specialist dementia advisor who can help them make sure they have the right support in place. And if you are a carer, which is a huge responsibility and can be very isolating too, then you can go to the centre each week on a Wednesday between 1.30pm – 3.30pm for a coffee and a chat about anything you want to talk about. Michelle Vodden explained that the drop in allows people to have some time away from caring for their relative and chat to people who truly understand the joys and lows of being a carer. Plus they swap tips on how to navigate the systems that are sometimes very complicated and daunting too. For instance, my friends mum needed a wet room for bathing, but how do you find out about how to get that done in your house? I wouldn’t have the first clue as to where to start, but the supportive element of this centre, means that you will be given advice and contacts to call, so that you know how to get a wet room installed. The lymphoedema support is wonderful. (Lymphoedema is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues. It can affect any part of the body, but usually develops in the arms or legs.) The centre offers local people affected by the condition the opportunity to attend a nurse-led clinic locally rather than have to travel miles to receive support. If you have been diagnosed with an illness, are caring for someone or have recently been bereaved then you may meet the centre’s criteria to have a block of complementary therapy treatments at the centre, for instance Indian Head Massage, Reflexology and Reiki. All these situations can be very sad and confusing and taking time out to give yourself something, like a session of Reiki, can help in a small way to get you through. All you have to do is contact the centre and Michelle can advise you if you meet the eligibility criteria and what to do next. Regardless of whether a family has been seen by the centre’s partner hospices or not, if you have experienced a bereavement, this could be recently or a while ago, then a Bereavement Help Point is run every Monday from 10.30am – 12.30 so that you can talk about your loved one, have a cup of tea and be listened to, or just have the cup of tea and feel comforted by being out of the house and away from emptiness that grief brings, knowing that it passes, but having somewhere to go can help. If you feel you need further help to come to terms with your loss, then there are counselling services locally, including the Dove Service in Stoke that can help and Michelle Vodden can set up the contact for you. However if you are feeling isolated and just want to go and be sociable then the Craft Group on a Thursday between 2pm -4pm is a really wonderful group, they recently knitted jumpers for the teddy bears they give out to children supported by St Giles Hospice and are currently planning their next project, so why not turn off the TV and go along. Michelle Vodden explained that as the centre is still new, they are still developing ideas and one that is being considered is making a small peaceful area in the garden to the side of the centre, so that it can be used by everyone to sit and take time out from life and be enjoyed. You know that gardening is my hobby and to have somewhere to go and feel peaceful is essential for me. The Redfern Museum in Uttoxeter has also become involved and runs sessions where people can talk about the history of Uttoxeter and reminisce about how it used to be. It’s great for people with dementia, as most often they remember things way back, but not recent events. So how is this all possible? It is because St Giles Hospice and Katharine House Hospice decided that Uttoxeter needed somewhere that you can go to get some support for a range of issues. They set up Holly Road, along with the Heath Big Local, and the Hermitage Charitable Trust, so that Uttoxeter has a supportive care centre that really can help to sign post you to what you need to do, where you need to go, when you are lost and don’t know which way to turn. Michelle Vodden, who is the coordinator, is an exceptional women, I was so impressed by her dedication and her wealth of knowledge about all the systems that people have to negotiate, she is also hugely compassionate and truly understands that sometimes in life, we all need is a helping hand to guide you in the right direction. Uttoxeter is a better place for this centre and for Michelle, her skills and determination to continue to build a support system for people is inspiring. To get in touch, either call 01889 220420 or e- mail info@hollyroad.co.uk or drop in to the bungalow at 2 Hermitage Gardens, Holly Road, Uttoxeter, ST14 7DT Michelle Vodden 34 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. JCB engineer braves the shave to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support A fter returning from a road trip around Europe, JCB Engineer David Graham needed a haircut – so decided to take the drastic but generous step of having it all shaved off for charity. David, 23, had his chin- length locks lopped off by colleagues to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support through its Brave the Shave campaign. The Electronic and Electrical Systems Engineer, who works at the JCB Compact Products factory, in Cheadle, has set himself a £300 fundraising target, and with the help of family and friends is well on course to achieve that. David, who lives in Rocester, said: “During JCB’s three-week summer shutdown I went on a road trip around central Europe and when I arrived back I realised it was time for a haircut. I normally have it fairly long and if I don’t style it, it is about chin length. However, I saw a poster for the Macmillan Brave the Shave campaign and decided to go for it. “It is a really good cause and I thought I could also raise awareness for the campaign among my fellow employees and encourage more people to join in and have a go. All my friends, family and work colleagues have been really supportive and pledged a lot of money to encourage me to have it all shaved off. I’d like to thank everyone who got involved and made a donation.” The head shave took place at the factory, with employees taking it in turn to cut off a handful of hair for an extra pledge of money. Finally, the shears came out and David was given a very close shave. David said: “After the event I did not have access to a mirror, so I took a selfie on my phone. I was a bit shocked at my appearance but I guess I will get used to it. I will grow my hair back but probably not as long as it was before. The main thing is it is all about raising money for a good cause.” People can still donate to the cause by visiting David’s fundraising page at: bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/d avid-graham-2/ Glitz Dancewear & Fancydress Call into our shop for fabulous Christmas, Disney and Halloween costumes! W ill daily washing dry out your hair? or clean itself? We definitely wash our hair more than we did a generation ago. For many of us it’s more likely to be a daily occurrence than a once a week event. But do we even need to bother? Opinions differ It’s not a cop-out but the correct answer is it depends on who you ask and on your hair! If you have fine hair it’s more likely to look limp the day after a wash so you may want to wash it more frequently. For curly and coarse hair every 3 days or so may be a better idea. Some people find their hair is more manageable and looks better the day after they’ve washed it as it’s too soft and floppy on the day itself. Hair that has been coloured or processed may need less washing as oil doesn’t travel so far down the hair shaft so it tends to be more dry on the ends and need shampooing less. Choosing the right product The key is to use the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair. If you feel the need to wash it everyday use Moroccanoil smooth or volume shampoo. If it’s looking flat and limp the day after washing you may be using a shampoo and conditioner which is too rich and heavy for your hair. Many people believe washing everyday will strip the hair of natural oils. Whilst this used to be true many years ago when shampoos were more basic, today most brands replenish lost moisture. A lot of research and development goes into shampoo and conditioners, so pick the range specifically for your hair type, all of the Spires team will advise you on the best products to use. The styling circle It can be a catch-22 situation. You wash your hair every day but need to use more product to get it to look good so you need to wash it again to remove the buildup. While frequent washing may not cause damage, it’s the subsequent styling that does. Daily exposure to hairdryers, straighteners and styling products is going to put a strain on your hair. For this reason unless you have hair you can simply wash and leave to dry naturally, you should not be washing your hair every day. If you feel your hair looks greasy, use some Moroccanoil dry shampoo in between washes. Put in more than it takes You need to be pretty hardcore to give up shampoo and conditioner as our hair-washing regimes play a big part in our lives. Our hair has a direct impact on how we feel about ourselves. Shampoos these days give more than they take! The focus is on keeping the hair healthy by pushing in proteins or moisture rather than just being a detergent. So if you pick the right product for your hair and wash it whenever you feel it needs it there’s nothing to get into a lather about! Autumn Hair Care by Kim Plant, Spires Hairdressers, Uttoxeter

Baby Sensory by Laura Johnson Baby Olympics T he Rio 2016 Olympics have been the most successful overseas games for Team GB since the games began. The athletes dedicate their lives to their sport and train for years to reach their peak. Exercise is so important to all of us and it’s never too early to start stretching, balancing and moving. Babies can really benefit from regular movement to help them to learn how their bodies move and to help develop strength and co- ordination. Exercise is especially important for the development of the brain which grows in size and complexity throughout a babies first year. Exercise helps to promote the growth of new brain cells that help with memory and learning and can help to promote connections between brain cells too. From birth a baby works really hard to be strong enough to lift their head, by four months most babies can push up on their forearms when they are on their tummies and can hold their head steady. By 7-8 months most babies can sit up without support and some may have already started to crawl. At Baby Sensory we provide lots of activities to help your baby to develop and move, as parents and carers there are lots of things we can do to help them reach these developmental milestones. From birth helping baby to exercise by providing regular massage can help blood flow and help baby to have a more stable heart and breathing rate. Tummy time is a vital part of a baby’s early development as it not only helps to strengthen the neck and shoulders it also helps baby to crawl and then move on to walking. There is a wealth of evidence to suggest crawling helps to stimulate the right and left hemispheres of the brain, helps co- ordinate both sides of the body and with eye development too. If your baby isn’t a fan of lying on the floor on their tummies why not try lying them on a soft ball or beach ball, hold them firmly with both hands, it will give them a brand new view of the world and allows them to kick out their legs and practise their swimming strokes too. As babies grow introducing balls and play can help with hand eye co-ordination and throwing and rolling skills. Why not sit your baby opposite you and roll a play ball or soft ball to them and encourage them to roll it or push it back to you. Once they get the hang of it will provide hours of fun. As baby learns to pull them self up and stand you can have lots of fun kicking the ball too. Give it ago, your baby might be winning a Gold at the Olympics in years to come. Chocolate and Salted Caramel Drizzle Cake L ast week was my daughters 18th Birthday. We planned to have a party in the garden. My husband had just finished building a pizza oven, so we all made our own pizzas and they were delicious. We followed the pizzas with a four layer chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream, drizzled all over with salted caramel and decorated with chocolate hearts. To make the cake you will need the following - 12oz light muscovado sugar 4 eggs 8 fl oz milk 8 fl oz oil 2 tbsp golden syrup 2 tbsp black treacle 12 oz self raising flour 2oz good quality cocoa powder 2 tsp baking powder For the frosting you will need 500g Icing sugar 250g unsalted butter 260g Salted caramel (I used M&S Salted Caramel Sauce) Plus 260g Salted Caramel Sauce to decorate Chocolate Hearts Edible glitter This cake looks impressive, but is very simple to make. First preheat your oven to 160 C. Grease and line four 18cm (7”) sandwich tins. Blend together the sugar, eggs, oil, golden syrup and black treacle and mix thoroughly. Add the sieved flour, baking powder and cocoa and mix until you have a smooth batter. Divide this mixture between your four cake tins and bake for approximately 25 - 30 minutes until the cake springs back when lightly pressed. Leave to cool in tins for 10 mins then turn out onto wire rack. I leave on the greaseproof paper until I am ready to ice, as the cakes keep moist. While the cake is cooling, make your buttercream by mixing the softened butter with the sieved icing sugar to make a smooth frosting. Next add the Salted Caramel Sauce - I always made my own salted caramel, but if in a hurry this is a fantastic subsitute and a perfect consistency for the drizzle on top of the cake! Remove the greaseproof paper from your cake and sandwich it together with the buttercream. Spread the remainder over the top and sides of the cake with a spatula or palette knife, giving a smooth finish. Finally warm your remaining Salted Caramel Sauce and drizzle all over the top of your cake, allowing it to drizzle down the sides. You can then decorate your cake with whatever you like, i.e. chocolate shards, sweets, fruit, etc. I used some chocolate hearts and sprinkled on a little edible glitter. The cake was a great success, perfect for a special birthday. Happy Birthday Daisy! Karen’s Cake Corner by Karen Hill

Take Two W e recently ordered a replacement needleplate for our elderly sewing machine. When it came it was not correct; we returned it and the suppliers promised us a refund. Looking online to check, I found that they had not done us a refund; they had charged us again for the first one. After an email they were very apologetic and the refund was on my statement next day. No problem ! But: Shock ! Horror ! On the statement were three card transactions that rang no bells at all. Two of them were to Windeln.de .... looking like Mothercare in Germany... and the other to Pharmacy Central in Australia. It was a total over £300. Next day, off to see those nice girls in HSBC in Uttoxeter to get it sorted. Before I went, another check on my statement revealed that the Australian site had refunded the cash. Anyway... “Really sorry. We can’t help. You need to phone the number on the back of your card.Would you like to use our phone? Dial 01” So I pulled up a stool at the desk in the corner and dialled 01. We started going through the menu, and then the security checks. Well... do you know your telephone security number from memory ? The call sounded just like calling from home so I returned to Alton. After the security checks I was advised that waiting time was 25 minutes. Cup of tea. “Well.” I thought, “I bet the bank phone is a hotline. Must be quicker”. So I went back to Uttox to have another go on their phone. “Would I be better going into Derby to a Premier Branch ?” ... remembering from last time that Uttoxeter could not cancel an account but that Longton could ... since when Longton has closed. “No. Card accounts are done exclusively by phone”. OK. So I resumed my perch in the corner and dialled the number, now having details to hand. It was not easy to hear above the usual chat and the overhead music. I requested less music for a few minutes. Linda came round to explain that the music was automatic; it came on when the bank opened and went off when it shut. She kindly offered me the use of the quiet office, but by this time I had discovered that waiting time was again 25 minutes. So much for a Hot Line. It was time for another cuppatea and a walk in the country. Diversion.... En route I called into Nat West to pay in a cheque for wifey. I was invited to a private demo of the paying-in machine. “It’s so much quicker. Press start; follow the instructions onscreen; put the cheque and the pay- in slip together through this trapdoor. Job done. “ But... It spat them out again! After 3 attempts we went back to the desk where a rubber stamp did the job in 10 secs. Perhaps the phoneline would have less traffic in the evening? At 7.0pm I tried again. Advised waiting time was 25 minutes. However, this time I was prepared with an appropriate book ... “War & Peace.”After more than one hour I got through to a very apologetic, super-polite lady who sorted it out brilliantly. She was satisfied that being 79, baby shops were not on my agenda. Something told me that she was not from Barnsley. I asked, “Where are you speaking from?” “Manila”. Can you believe it ? The Philippines is 7 hours in advance of our time. It was 3.15 am for her. She told me that I would get a new card and that next day their “Fraud Team” would phone to confirm a few details. At 08.15 next day came the call; one day later a new card arrived, and the money was back on the statement. Exactly right. Now that’s not bad is it ? Sadly the Uttoxeter branch of HSBC is closing on 11 November. Jack’s nostalgic thoughts... by Jack Hayhurst, of Alton Former Painsley High School Woodwork Teacher Have I got news for you by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University. Thanks for your comments - and a time for reflection Thanks to everybody who stopped me to comment on last month’s column. The story of my encounter with Bruce Springsteen obviously amused or surprised a lot of you. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a response to anything I’ve written in the Voice. Strangers came up to me and said they enjoyed it, which is really rewarding. It certainly proved that people read this magazine. As a lifelong journalist, I’m heartened to know that you still value the printed word, even if in the case of the Voice you don’t pay for it. There are plenty of magazines – both free and of course paid-for – that are doing well, but they represent only a tiny fraction of the output of journalists like me. As I approach retirement, I thought I’d offer a quick summary of the state of British journalism, because this stuff matters – it’s how you get told about what happens in the world. And I’m often asked whether I would recommend journalism as a career to young people, particularly as none of us seems to want to pay for news any more. We get it free online. So if people won’t pay for news, does that mean there are no jobs for journalists? It’s a fair question, but based on wrong assumptions in my view, because news is of no use unless it can be trusted. Who do you trust to tell you the news? Most of my career was spent in broadcasting, and most of that at the BBC. Broadcast news still has a pretty strong reputation and I can’t see viewers and listeners abandoning TV and radio for a while yet. My opinion is partly based on the fact that the online alternatives to broadcast news are so unreliable. Almost every headline on online sites is clickbait – a teaser to get people to look at the story – and very few of those headlines accurately reflect the stories they’re supposed to be about. The second click almost always leads to disappointment. In fact that last sentence could be my motto for Internet news sites. TV and radio in the UK are, on the other hand, legally required to be fair, accurate and balanced. Despite complaints that they aren’t any of those things, usually from politicians of all sides, my experience is that they do a pretty good job of avoiding bias and that they present most political arguments fairly. Newspapers on the other hand have no such requirement for impartiality and I suspect they have a much less certain future. As soon as the job of relating factual information becomes secondary to delivering political opinions, as it has for many of the former Fleet Street papers, you, dear reader, might as well go online, because the political opinions there are twice as indignant, outrageous, or even bigoted, and far more likely to make you laugh, cheer or shout in indignant rage. And of course you can chip in your own two penn’orth, whether you know what you’re talking about or not. I predict the further decline and eventual end of newspapers, maybe within the next ten years, but brighter prospects for trusted broadcasters. The rise of PR and the need to oppose it So what of the youngsters who want to be sports or news reporters, or TV news presenters. Where are the jobs for them? Well, it’s true that there aren’t many jobs in local newspapers, where I started, and as I said earlier there will be even fewer - if any at all - in just a few years from now. My first paper, the Walsall Observer, went out of business a few years ago. But there are jobs in the growing number of online sites, most of which would benefit hugely from an influx of trained journalistic talent. And all manner of private and public sector organisations are employing people with journalism skills as their media and public relations departments expand to take advantage of the opportunities the Internet offers to get their message across. Some football clubs today employ more journalists than a lot of small newspapers. Indeed there are Staffordshire University graduates working in at least 15 of the 20 Premier League clubs. And, because control of the means of distributing information to the masses is no longer the exclusive preserve of elite media organisations, there is, paradoxically, a need for more journalists in trusted, traditional news providers - like the BBC - to challenge the often partisan messages from the new wave of PR specialists. So there is a bright future for journalists and journalism, even if I’ll be playing less of a part in it. I’m retiring from teaching journalism but that won’t mean I stop being a journalist or a writer. In fact I’m open to freelance offers. No job too small. Advert over. And I will still be writing in the Voice, for as long as the editor will have me, and I’ll be trying to deliver a mostly positive message. Next month for example, I should have good news about prices for the annual Uttoxeter Lions bonfire on November 5th. Watch this space.

Sport is in my blood... by Jeff Wood of Cheadle, dedicated to local sport for a lifetime... A fter seeing my fellow columnist Neil Baker’s article in the last edition of The Voice. I was delighted to read of the thoroughly deserved tribute paid to him by Crewe Alexandra in recognition of his services to local football over many years. It’s perhaps fitting that I should record a few anecdotes about Bake as I have known and respected him for a long time. I am proud to say I have been both his manager and his playing colleague over the years. I remember him playing for Kingsley YC in the Leek and District Cup Final many years ago at Boltons Sports Ground.. This is a game Bake has mentioned previously and one which Kingsley YC won. I hadn’t been able to watch many of the Youth team’s games before the final as I was playing on Saturdays myself but, as the manager along with Pat Keates on the day, I recall Bake played in a side in which I didn’t think there was a single weakness right through from Phil Alcock in goal to Ray Hulson up top. I do believe Bake has retained a photograph of the team taken on the day. The only sad note now is that Ian Mellor, the captain and a great player, is no longer with us. Although I suppose most if not all of the lads were under age, we went afterwards to the Blacksmiths at Kingsley Holt until the early hours to celebrate the success. Even my late dad, who was an avid football enthusiast and had quite a lot to do with the running of the team, celebrated with us, although I always thought until then that he was teetotal. A year or so after that, I went on to play with Bake and I could see at the time that he was not only a gifted player but also one with extraordinary tactical awareness, although I must confess I never thought then that football would be his career. Bake would have been equally successful as a cricketer but, as football was his first love, he had unfortunately to sacrifice his cricketing career. Although I went on later to play against him a few times, injury unfortunately cut short his career as a player and, as all readers know, he eventually went on to manage Leek Town during the most successful period in their history. Knowing that I possessed the necessary qualifications, Bake approached me when my playing days were over and appointed me as his physio at Leek Town, a position I thoroughly enjoyed until Bake’s departure to Crewe under the renowned Dario Gradi. There are one or two amusing incidents I should mention during my time as Bake’s physio which he may remember. There was one time when we were going to play at Burscough. Now I knew that Burscough is a few miles inland from the coast and when I saw the sea I wondered which way the coach driver was taking us. It was not really my place to question the route but we ended up at Formby ! We then rushed to Burscough much too late for the customary pre match warm up and, upon alighting having already changed, had to run the gauntlet of an irate and extremely derisory group of spectators outside the ground awaiting our late arrival. Another occasion was when the driver lost his way to Irlam. I remember Bake remarking that this wouldn’t have happened with Manchester United under Sir Alex ! I can also remember going to Accrington Stanley and, upon our departure, the spinning rear wheels of the coach started sinking in to the shale car park. The situation was only recovered by the whole team getting off and pushing the vehicle clear so that we got back safely. Neither shall I forget the after match dressing room atmosphere following a bad defeat at Winsford. The players were apprehensive as to what Bake might say when he made his way into the dressing room for the post match inquest. Alan Smith was his assistant at the time and he and Bake came in with the players anticipating a real roasting. Not a single word was uttered by Bake, Smithy or anyone else. You could have heard a pin drop and the players changed in absolute silence. The point had been made. Bake and Smithy duly departed and it was not until then that anything was said. I think it was either Andy Morgan or Frank Sromek who made some amusing quip and the gloom was suddenly lifted. All happy memories. Bake of course eventually went on to lead his team out at Wembley and the rest is history as they say. I hope Bake won’t mind me remarking upon what I consider as one of his greatest strengths in management which is his calmness under pressure before the game and his willingness to take the time to speak to anyone who wishes to speak to him. When I was managing I couldn’t do with anyone pestering me before the game but then I never possessed the same qualities as Bake does. Well, I’ve devoted the whole of this article to one of my greatest and most respected mates in football, but before close I should congratulate Checkley CC on winning the Staffordshire Cup to add to their Twenty/20 trophy. Cricket has finished and the promotion and relegation issues have now been resolved. Football takes over, although I won’t be able to see as many Leek Town games this season for reasons which a few readers and particularly another fellow columnist will appreciate. Checkley Cricket Club U13s C heckley Cricket Club U13s clinched the SMJCL Pairs League (Section C) for the second consecutive year, after a convincing away victory at Oakamoor in early August. In a competitive league, it was Checkley’s consistency throughout the season that saw them over the line, supported with many outstanding individual performances with bat and ball. Jon Dreher (Coach) stated: “Winning the league was a result of a lot of hard work during coaching sessions; then being able to apply these skills in games. The children were a joy to coach and their ability to carry out game plans, for such a young team was outstanding!” This achievement was one of Checkley’s many successes during their ‘Super Summer’, as U9, U15 and U17 teams won league titles, with their U11s finishing runners-up. In addition, many players represented older age groups, including playing adult cricket and representative cricket for their district and Staffordshire. “Our successful player development and ‘on-the- field’ achievements in Checkley’s junior teams are the result of our dedicated coaches and children who want to learn, and make themselves better cricketers,” stated Jon Dreher. The evening featured players from Abbots Bromley CC, Belper CC, Blunham CC, Cheadle CC, Ticknall CC, Wistaston CC and Uttoxeter CC making up a Chairman’s and President’s XI’s. A competitive pink ball Twenty20 fixture kept the spectators entertained. Likewise, they were able to enjoy a BBQ, ice cream, games area, cask ale, a raffle, commentary and music. The President’s XI were asked to bat first. They reached 133 all out off their allotted 20 overs. A destructive 42 run a ball by Jack Stokes (WCC) was the top score. Rory Middleton (UCC) was also in the runs with 31 off 23 balls. Jonny Clewes (CCC) 14 and Mick Hall (UCC) 12 played some inventive shots and were the only other batsmen to make double figures. With the ball, the stand out performers were Johnny Pearson 3 for 13 (Belper CC) and Dan Cotterill (UCC) 3 for 18. Also, Jacob Mills (CCC) 1 for 7, Harry Degg (CCC) 1 for 8 and Skipper Ben Brown (UCC) 1 for 18 capped a good all round bowling display for the Chairman’s XI. Jake Ratcliffe (UCC) was unfortunate not to pick up a wicket. A stunning running one handed catch by Shaun Rashid (ABCC) dismissed danger man Jimmy Sellers (CCC). The President’s XI captain, Gavin Hall (UCC) felt that 133 was a below par score. In the chase, the Chairman’s XI won the game at a canter by 6 wickets. Matthew Sellers’ (CCC) 42 off 19 balls set the tone for the innings. There was some success for the bowlers; James Sellers 2 for 4 dismissed his brother Matthew following a sharp slip catch from Ryan Day (CCC). Max Hurst (Blunham CCC) 1 for 9 and Richard Stewart (UCC) 1 for 17 bowled with some discipline. Adam Johnson (UCC) 34 not out off 13 balls and Nick Crombie (TCC) 21 not out off 23 balls saw the game concluded after 14.4 overs. Alan Bennett (UCC) was unfortunate not to break the dominate last wicket partnership. The club night enabled Uttoxeter Cricket Club to showcase a good quality game of cricket played in a good spirit. After the match, players and spectators enjoyed a few drinks together. Also it was an opportunity to wish two UCC players, Dave Powell Jones and Josh Woolley happy 18th birthdays. Thanks must go to all involved (there are too many people to thank personally). We hope to stage events like this in the future. Lastly the game was kindly sponsored by Paul Walker and the Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice. Uttoxeter Cricket Club - Club Night
