The document provides an update on recent events in Hadley Wood. It summarizes:
1) The community celebrated the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and is now looking forward to King Charles III's reign. Several trees were planted around Hadley Green to commemorate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and reign.
2) The Hadley Wood Association's Annual General Meeting in November was well-attended and successful, with discussions around community issues and the Centre Upgrade project.
3) News from West Lodge Park hotel discusses the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic but notes improvements made and welcoming the local community.

THANK
September was dominated by the sad death of our
dear Queen. We share with so many others our heartfelt
gratitude for her service over so many years, for myself as one of the ļ¬rst Elizabethans
(born two days after she became Queen). We now look forward in hope to the reign of
King Charles III.
We have many other thanks to oļ¬er, ļ¬rst and currently to the Fireworks Committee
led by Dawn Wellings and Alison Moon heading for a very successful event on
Sunday 6 November. Already over 2,000 tickets sold through the new online system.
For members, there is a discount available but you need to contact the oļ¬ce for the code.
Please bear with us on response time; the managers are part time and will not be there over half term.
Many of our other activities and projects are progressing through the eļ¬orts of volunteers on our Committee
and otherwise, with Noah Shahar settling in as our General Manager alongside our Centre Manager. Thanks to them.
The new football partnership with Massimo Orsi as PowerHause Academy Hadley Wood has had a successful start
to the season with Sunday morning matches well attended by parents, and bringing in new HWA members.
PHAHW are actively recruiting players. Thanks to Massimo and his team of coaches and volunteers, who have also
transformed the garages area on Bartrams Lane Field.
There is plenty of news and advice in this edition including changes at the Tennis Club. Other recent highlights have
been the inauguration of our new vicar Sam Ashton at St. Paulās and the grand success of the HW Golf Club Gala
Centenary Dinner. Thanks to all those who keep these clubs and institutions going and organise events.
There is a lot going on at HWA; please get in touch with us through the oļ¬ce (or directly to myself)
if you want to know more about anything you see or hear - especially if you are interested in becoming involved.
We are still looking for new Treasurer and for HWN Editor, as well a seeking nominations for a new Trustee to replace
Rupert Mackay.
We look forward to seeing you at our AGM on Tuesday 22 November.
Robert Wilson
Chairman on behalf of Trustees
The Association is inviting volunteers for the following positions, joining with our current team of
Trustees, Committee Members and Managers in running the HWA at the heart of our community.
ā¢ Trustee
ā¢ Treasurer
ā¢ Committee Members (two)
ā¢ HWN Editor (and support team)
We have many other ways in which you can be involved in a range of activities and responsibilities.
Please contact our General Manager (Noah Shahar) on hwageneralmanager@gmail.com or Chairman on robert.wilson.consult@gmail.com
ACTIVE + LOOKING FORWARD
Dear Residents
All best wishes for a happy and healthy Christmas
and New Year season.
The Association is ļ¬ourishing with two major successful events during November:
Fireworks and our Annual General Meeting - see the reports on following pages.
They both show the high level of interest in community events, and the willingness of
volunteers to put in their time and skills. We are looking forward to an enjoyable Christmas
on the Parade, coordinated by Helen Touli - please come, support and enjoy.
HWA seeks to maintain a balance of running its own activities, and coordinating or supporting other community
groups. The recent activity by a range of individuals to promote a ļ¬bre opportunity (Open Infra) was self generating,
with thanks to all involved. HWA played some part hosting a Q&A as part of the AGM evening; not making a
recommendation for a commercial sale, but facilitating information sharing. We have been active to promote the
campaign to Save our Southgate constituency from the proposal to make Hadley Wood part of a Haringey linked
Southgate & Wood Green, aiming to match the 150 plus objections which saved our inclusion in Cockfosters Ward
for the local Council.
We are making progress in running our responsibilities, but we are held up missing new recruits in key positions :
Trustee, Treasurer, HWN Editor (this edition again out together with the help of our printers). We now need two new
Committee members following two retirements. We are looking for people who what want an active role in some
part of what we do, as well as contributing to our discussions. We want a balance of diversity in every sense including
interest and skills such as ļ¬nancial, buildings, grounds, tech, membership database, events, local aļ¬airs,
education, charities...
We give our special thanks to two retiring Committee members: Helen Speroni and Alison Moon, both for personal
reasons relating to house moves, family priorities and jobs. Helen played a key part, as volunteer architect, in starting
our Centre Upgrade project with concept guidance, user interviews and plans. Always an HWA enthusiast, she led
patrols to encourage proper members only use of our car park. And much else. Ali brought us a strong link with
Tennis (as Chair) and took on the responsibilities of Secretary. She brought her good insights into our discussions
and stepped up to partner Dawn to take over the big job of Fireworks. That is a very high note on which to leave
our Committee (but fortunately continuing with Fireworks). Claire Mangan has very kindly taken over as Secretary,
and already deserves our thanks for the range of contributions she is making.
A major step forward for us is having a General Manager, Noah Shahar, who is bringing her cheerful character as
well as skills to this new role. We are seeing improvements in the oļ¬ce environment and progress in the vital task
of keeping us up to date on Health & Safety requirements (with Claire and Gill), working with our Centre Manager
to cope with the high volume of demands on their time. They are both only part time; they give us a lot of āvolunteerā
attention outside oļ¬ce hours, for which we are very grateful. Please bear with us over response times; we ask
members to understand and support them. Our Centre Manager continues to be an essential part of HWA,
and we value all she does
We are looking forward to a great 2023, with active Trustees, Committee and Managers.
We have important plans including Centre Upgrade and wider usage.
We have a strong membership (but please encourage others to join).

OUR 2022 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SUCCESS
This year our AGM event attracted a full hall of members, who enjoyed a welcome drink and remained through a two
hour meeting with many staying on to socialise afterwards in the bar.
In the formal Associationās Annual General Meeting session all resolutions were passed including the re-appointment of
the current Trustees and thanks to the Committee for all their work on behalf of Hadley Wood. We particularly thanked
Rupert Mackay for staying on throughout last year and for a further short period whilst we ļ¬nd a replacement,
and those who ran the wonderful Fireworks evening led by Dawn Wellings and Alison Moon.
Within the Chairmanās Report, we acknowledged the retirement of Mrs Janice Salmon who taught ballet at the Centre
for nearly 40 years. Her charming story is amongst the community reports. Pat Taylor explained how she is leading our
Hadley Wood History project and invited contributions from all local organisations to herself or through HWA.
We welcomed Akiva Rosenblatt, the new(ish) Rabbi at the Synagogue in Lancaster Avenue - very much part of
our community.
There was a lively session on our Centre Upgrade project. Helen Touli showed our current plans looking towards the
major works next summer. Liz Snape presented ideas on uses of our Centre, including āwarm hubā as a place for
residents to come and socialise. There was a very positive response with a range of ideas and we invite people to
bring proposals to us. We have our next Committee meeting on 15 December. Some we can manage quite quickly
with active volunteers. Others can be accommodated within our evolving Upgrade plans.
In our third session we covered a range of community interest subjects. Simon Lester of Hadley Wood Security
highlighted the amazing success of the MLB patrols in cutting down crime (scaring oļ¬ through to conviction)
and the increasing focus on āļ¬rst respondersā with ļ¬rst aid training and deļ¬brillators (a vital need given poor
ambulance response). Lakis Pavlou and David Harbott gave updates on Green Belt and Draft Neighbourhood Plan.
Councillor Alex Georgiou alerted us to the disastrous Boundary Commission proposal to split up our historic Enļ¬eld
Southgate constituency and combine us in a North-South mismatch as Southgate & Wood Green. He urged us all to
put in objections by the deadline of 5 December. The meeting supported HWA to inform residents and itself to object.
Finally: Fibre. The Open Infra proposal to provide ļ¬bre access to Hadley Wood, with a time limited oļ¬er linked to
threshold levels of contracts in three zones, has excited a lot of interest. An upsurge of activists encouraging others
to sign up; some doubters. Maurice Kurland gave us a presentation explaining the proposals. As our invited guest,
Neil Ashby of Open Infra ļ¬elded a range of questions including Neighbourhood Watch concerns about door knocking
and the viability of their business, with others showing strong support.
As HWA, we see it as part of our role to help coordinate community activity and responses to challenges, as well as
running our own activities. We depend on the support of our members and appreciate the encouragement of a
lively AGM. With thanks to those who organised the event and served at the bar.
Hadley Wood Dance Centre Ltd. For HWA AGM Tuesday 22nd November 2022
This has again been a challenging year for the Hadley Wood Dance Centre. We have complied with all Covid guidelines
to enable children to attend classes in safety. Examinations were held in December 2021 and July 2022, but had to be
conducted as ļ¬lmed sessions. All the candidates were very successful, which was an excellent achievement, particularly
for the Grade 6, 7 and 8 students, who had also taken GCSE and A Levels during the year.
After 39 years as Principal, I have had to take the very diļ¬cult decision that the time has come for me to retire at the
end of this term. Age has played its part in my decision, coupled with the very small number of pupils currently in the
school, which has now made it completely unviable to maintain. Unfortunately Covid has been the main cause for
the reduction in pupils across all age groups, many of whom found it diļ¬cult to continue
their ballet studies on-line during lockdown, which in turn aļ¬ected their motivation to
return to classes once we resumed face-to-face teaching in June 2021. However, the pupils
who have been able to continue classes have been extremely loyal and dedicated and their
support, together with that of their parents, has been much appreciated.

News from West Lodge Park since Covid
November 2022
The crippling closure of West Lodge Park on 23rd March 2020 was followed by a limited opening on 5th July that year,
but after that the restrictions on trade kept changing every couple of weeks, for the next 22 months, including the rule
of six, Eat out to Help out, limits on functions of 30 then 15 then 6 then 15 etc.
In fact we had 35 diļ¬erent Coronavirus updates in total indicating the bewildering changes brought in by central
government over this period and imposed on the hotel.
April 12th 2021 brought a new opening after the hotel had been shut down again that spring, with dining only
allowed outside in freezing conditions!
Nonetheless, we are nothing if not resilient and have used the downtime proļ¬tably to improve our outside facilities,
including a lovely new terrace with heated gazebos, much enjoyed by Hadley Wood residents, as well as a Garden
pavilion for wedding ceremonies, tea parties etc, better parking, and driveway repairs,
Inside we have completed a myriad of new bedroom and public area schemes, including notably the knock through of
our John Evelyn and King Charles Rooms, allowing for larger numbers for functions at the hotel for the ļ¬rst time.
https://www.westlodgepark.co.uk/
The Beale Arboretum has certainly suļ¬ered from the extreme weather of the past few years, notably the very dry
weather in the ļ¬rst Covid year, and the extreme heat of this past summer followed by a very wet and stormy autumn.
But trees are resilient, and we have lost remarkably few, while all the time planting dozens more beautiful specimens,
and thousands of people attend our garden open days and arboretum tours each year.
https://www.westlodgepark.co.uk/arboretum/
Sadly Covid necessitated the sale of our Beales Hotel in Hatfield, a more corporate property than
West Lodge Park, and the collapse of business travel since the pandemic has proved that this
was the right decision.
Happily we never stay still at Beales Hotels and are about to open our new hotel in beautiful
Saxmundham, Suļ¬olk. The Bell Hotel is a gorgeous Grade II listed building of almost identical
vintage to West Lodge Park, and opens for business on December 12th.
https://thebellhotelsaxmundham.co.uk/
Hadley Wood residents are always warmly welcome at West Lodge Park, your local hotel, where the ratings and reviews
tell us the food and service is better than ever, and it is a unique beneļ¬t of living in this area to have such a beautiful hotel
on the doorstep when so many others have closed. Membership of the Hadley Wood Association confers additional
beneļ¬ts at the hotel including discounts on bedrooms and functions.
You will have noticed the constantly changing banners on Cockfosters Road indicating a lively programme of special
events over the course of the year, a real feature of the hotel, including concert evenings, arboretum tours,
gourmet nights, Christmas events, beekeeping days, and many more.
https://www.westlodgepark.co.uk/whats-on/
In 2025, the Beale family will celebrate 80 years at West Lodge Park, a unique partnership with Hadley Wood
since 1945, spread over four generations of the same family, proudly serving the local community.

Over 100 long serving members of staļ¬ work at West Lodge Park and it is always a pleasure
for us all to welcome our local friends and neighbours in Hadley Wood back to this lovely hotel.

REMEMBERING QUEEN ELIZABETH II
When you next drive along Sydney Chapman Way on Hadley Green towards Hadley Wood,
you will notice to your left three freshly planted trees. They are black poplars, and two are tall and
imposing, whereas the one in the middle is smaller and, you may think, just a little sparse. They were
planted on a misty morning in late November to commemorate Her late Majesty the Queenās
Platinum Jubilee. One was donated by the Rotary Club of Barnet, another by the Town Team of
Chipping Barnet and the third, the little one in the middle, by Barnet Museum.
The two larger trees were sourced commercially from abroad,
but their smaller cousin planted by the Museum, has a
fascinating story to tell. According to Martin Russell, the
Deputy Representative Lieutenant for the London Borough
of Barnet, it can trace its parentage back to a splendid black
poplar planted by Queen Elizabeth II in Windsor Great Park
40 years ago. A cutting from that tree was planted around
10 years ago on Totteridge Common where it has grown to
full maturity. Another cutting was recently taken from the
Totteridge Common specimen to create the sapling planted
on Hadley Green by Barnet Museum.
A gardening enthusiast in Hadley Wood has made the
interesting observation that a smaller sapling has a better
chance of taking root and growing tall because itās more
compact root system is less vulnerable to damage. So in the
years to come the smaller poplar whose grandparent
was planted by the Queen may in her memory become a
dominant feature of Hadley Green.
On the other side of the white gates next to St Maryās Church,
1st December marks the opening of another chapter in the
history of Monken Hadley Common. On that date one of the
last parliamentary bills to receive the royal assent before
the Queenās death took eļ¬ect, when the land forming the
Common was transferred to a new charitable corporation
on perpetual trusts for the public beneļ¬t.
Thus, as 2022 draws to a close, our much loved Monarch will be remembered with gratitude on one side of the white gates
for the protection secured during her reign for the Common which helps so much to deļ¬ne the ārural characterā of Hadley
Wood and Monken Hadley, just as on the other side of those gates the three black poplars on the Green will symbolise her
70 years of faithful service to the nation.

It has been a year full of change for St Paulās Church, Hadley Wood, but throughout it
we have continued to meet together and encourage one another in our love for Jesus
Christ and to live out our mission statement, āTo know Christ and make him knownā.
We enjoyed a more normal Christmas at the end of 2021. We enjoyed seeing lots of families who attended our Christmas
Craft Fair. We were excited to be able to hold our usual Carol and Christingle services, many thanks to Jill Northam and Simon
Oatridge for leading those respectively. We had a wonderful Christmas morning, with our mission partner, Andy Oatridge,
leading the service.
The new year was very busy as we continued the process of looking for a new Minister and geared up for our own AGM.
We also threw a very successful Pancake Party the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday; it was a pan-tastic event!
At the end of April, we were very sad to say farewell to our Minister, Revd Rupert Mackay, and his family, Hillary, Victoria,
Jamie, Nick, and Lexie. We had a wonderful bring and share church family lunch. Although we were very sad to see them go
it was a special day and we all enjoyed celebrating the many years of service that Rupert and his family have given to St Paulās
Church, Hadley Wood.
We are blessed with a wonderful relationship with the local theological college, Oakhill in Southgate , and often have students
from the college who are placed with us. At the end of June, we said more farewells to some much-loved faces from Oakhill.
Simon Oatridge and his family, Rebecca and Rosanna, and Lydia Taylor, who moved on to new ministries in Sheļ¬eld
and Manchester, respectively.
Throughout the late Spring and Summer, we were āin vacancyā as we did not have a minister. However, throughout this time
we continued to meet together. We found that we really enjoyed and beneļ¬tted from hearing from a variety of speakers,
including visits from Revd Rod Thomas (prev Bishop of Maidstone), Alan Purser (prev minister at St Paulās HW) and also,
sermons from our very own Revd Jill Northam and John Hall. Overall, despite the uncertainty of vacancy, it was a wonderful
time where the church family really came together in their love for God and for one another.
On 14th August we were very pleased to announce that the Revd Dr Sam Ashton would be our new minister. He and his
family, wife Alice, twins Bertie and Daisy and little baby Addie, moved into the parsonage in late August. Samās inauguration
and licensing took place on 3rd September, and it was a real joy to see so many people there to celebrate.
The Autumn has been full of events, excitement, and change. It has been wonderful to see both new and old faces at our
dog show, harvest festival, light party, and other services. It has been a delight to get to know Sam and his family as they have
settled in and brought new and fresh ideas to the church. It has been a joy to have children running up and down the pew
aisles again and the church family have particularly fallen in love with little Addieās smiles.
We are currently looking forward to Christmas with our ļ¬rst event, a Christmas Craft Fair, coming up
on Sunday 4th December. We hope to see the church full of Hadley Wood faces for our carol service (18/12),
Christingle services (24/12) and Christmas morning service as we celebrate the coming of the Lord Jesus.
We are extremely thankful to all those in the community and church that have served us in anyway,
whether it be time, prayerfully or ļ¬nancially over the past year as it has been full of change and uncertainty.
We are excited for what the next year holds and for the opportunities that it brings to continue to
love God and love others in Hadley Wood.

HWA Fireworks 2022
The HWA ļ¬reworks display this year was a great success. After a very wet and windy build-up the blue sky arrived
right on cue, just as the gates opened. Once again, we sold out of tickets a day or two before the event and the
atmosphere was one of community and fun.
This year the big change was to sell entry tickets online only. This process worked well, and the beneļ¬ts have
ensured that this is the way forward for future years.
This is the largest community event held in Hadley Wood and a lot of work goes into making it a fun and safe
environment for everyone. We are completely indebted to all our Hadley Wood volunteers who worked as
marshals and to the tennis club members who served drinks throughout the evening. Special shoutouts to Nick
and Tim Cockburn for their help in setting up the site and building the bonļ¬re, to Revd. Sam Ashton
(our new Minister at St Paulās) for being a wonderful MC, to Carmelina Petrou for organising fantastic raļ¬e prizes,
to Maria Evans for great music, to Hadley Wood Preschool for the fabulous guy who sat proudly on top of the
bonļ¬re and to Statons ā our main sponsor.
A further special thanks to Guy Cecil, who is stepping down from his role as Head of Health & Safety.
Guy took on this role in 2016 and his support over the years is hugely appreciated. He has passed the baton on
to Laura Gassner who will take over this vital role as of next year ā thank you Laura.
We really do appreciate all feedback received, which has been very positive and constructive. Next yearās
ļ¬reworks event falls on Sunday 5th November 2023, so pop the date in your diary and we look forward to
seeing you again then.We really do need more volunteers next year so if you can give up a couple of hours
at the event, please contact us through the HWA or directly. You will either be on a front gate checking tickets
or supervising our grounds. It is great fun, and you will always get to watch the ļ¬reworks!
We are also looking for a further sponsor to be joint sponsor with Statons, which we hope will then cover
the cost of the ļ¬reworks. If this interests you, please contact the HWA for further details.

The Friends of Hadley Wood School (FHWS)
A little update from your local school
Hadley Wood School have a successful and long running charity committee (the FHWS) and they would like to share
some details and news with local residents.
Each year, the FHWS fundraising eļ¬orts contribute a signiļ¬cant amount of additional funds to the School.
These funds go towards the provision of extra resources for the School, enabling the children to have opportunities
and experiences which may not be possible otherwise. The FHWS' role is to fund education enrichment ā
we are very proud to have raised enough funds in the past to create a childrenās kitchen, all-weather pitch,
adventure playground and IT Suite. The children have hugely beneļ¬ted from having these facilities on site and especially
love the all-weather pitch and adventure playground. With the school budget reducing over the years, the FHWS now
also helps with maintenance and building improvements.
Recent fundraising initiatives:
Last year, we raised enough funds for our KS1 playground to be resurfaced and the funds raised from our recent
Christmas Fete will go towards new laser markings (such as hopscotch) to encourage play. The laser markings will
be designed by Hadley Wood School pupils and we hope to have these ļ¬nalised in the next couple of months.
Ongoing fundraising initiatives:
The school hall is in need of an overhaul and the FHWS are keen to help raise funds for the redecoration of the hall
and the replacement of the production lighting. We are hoping to replace the old curtains soon with new blinds,
which are vital, especially in the summer months.
We also have an exciting ongoing project to rebuild the music room which is currently not being used.
We would love to replace this with a two story brick building, with separate access from the school to be
used for after school clubs, bringing in a new income year after year.
We hope to see this project begin very soon.
Other items on the schoolās wish list include: the provision of new musical instruments (Ā£1000),
a ļ¬ipchart for each class (total: Ā£1000), a smart TV to replace the Year 4 whiteboard (Ā£1900) and IT resources (Ā£750).
We hope to be able to purchase these items with the help of many by September 2023.
How we fundraise:
We host regular social events for both adults only, such as our Comedy and Quiz evenings, and events for families,
such as our fun Family Bingo night. We also host bigger events, including our Summer and Christmas fetes.
Our events are open to local residents and we would love to see more familiar and new faces. All are very welcome!
We would appreciate any support from local residents, be it by attending and supporting our events
(please see dates for your diary below), donating funds towards one of our initiatives or if you have a local business,
we would welcome sponsorship of our events.
Dates for your diary:

Hadley Green Drinking Fountain Update
After being oļ¬ered Ā£15,000 Grant from the Heritage of London Trust, I needed more funds
to complete the Fountain repairs. On the 15th of November, my Crowdfunding target of Ā£20,046 was reached!
I am humbled by our Amazing Barnet and Hadley Residents and our Community in supporting my project to have
our Historic Fountain renovated.
A few days later, Barnet Council also got in contact as they heard about the project and wanted to donate and
oļ¬er more support.
At the end of January, London Stone Conservation will start work renovating the fountain, totally dismantling it,
to clean are repair it, they will be making a new corbel in the same Aberdeenshire Red Peterhead Granite as one
is missing from the bottom of one of the basins. All the taps and pipework will be replaced, the entry hatch will be
renovated too.
They will be on site for around 3 weeks, people have asked me if they will take any of it oļ¬ site and I have assured
them nothing will leave.
While this is happening Aļ¬nity Water will lay new services to it, this will be over Hadley Green Road so 1 or 2 days
of disruption is expected as they will need to dig up the road, we are hoping only for 1 lane closure so the road
will not close!
I am getting quotes for a Bronze Plaque as we speak to commemorate the renovation and Miss Ann Paget who
donated it in 1885, the old plaque is long gone so it will be nice to have one again.
Barnet Council Parks dept will come prior and after to landscape around the fountain, a path will be added so
no more muddy shoes getting to it!
They also hoping to add a new park bench and a rubbish bin.
Once all is renovated and later in the spring, Heritage of London Trust want to get our junior schools involved to
promote the environmental impact of using reusable bottles with tap water, instead of needlessly buying new
single-use ones!
We hope to have an opening day and invite all the locals and dignitaries to what I hope will become the āGatewayā
to our wonderful green and open spaces we have on our doorstep in Hadley.
If you wanted to read more about the fascinating history of the Fountain and Miss Ann Paget, please look at:
https://www.wanders.co.uk/hadleygreendrinkingfountainappeal.html
I thank again, Heritage of London Trust, Barnet Residents Association, Hadley Green Residents Association,
Chipping Barnet Town Team, Barnet Museum, Barnet Council, Hadley Wood Association, Theresa Villiers PM,
All Barnet Ward Councilors, Aļ¬nity Water, The Barnet Society, Love Barnet, and High Living for their support
and not forgetting over 100 backers who have helped in making my dream happen!
