Apache Karaf is a small OSGi based runtime which provides a lightweight container onto which various components and applications can be deployed.
This session gives an overview over Apache Karaf, how to manage and configure Apache Karaf and how to use the comprehensive command shell that Karaf provides. By the example of a simple pet clinic application we will demonstrate how to build and deploy a web application on Apache Karaf. This talk will introduce the different deployment mechanisms available in Karaf and how to deploy bundles from the file system, command shell or via a maven repository. You will learn how to manage external dependencies via features, use the Karaf maven plugin to create features and build and configure persistence bundles for Apache Karaf. We will further give an overview, how to use Karaf in a cloud environment and how to use the Apache Cellar project to build up an Apache Karaf cluster.

VCL template abstraction model and automated deployments to Fastly

Hosting hundreds of websites and backend services for multiple environments at the Content Delivery Network level presented a challenge for us at A+E. We solved this problem by applying the DevOps concept of “Infrastructure as Code”. First, a VCL templating framework was created to support a multitude of services and environment agnostic configurations. Then we integrated our CI tool with GitHub and Fastly to make a scalable way of managing our many services. This walkthrough is based on our real-world experiences. We discuss: using the template framework; how to handle the workflow between development, QA, and production environments; and the API calls and integrations necessary for automating deployments to Fastly.

Making the most out of kubernetes audit logs
The Kubernetes audit logs are a rich source of information: all of the calls made to the API server are stored, along with additional metadata such as usernames, timings, and source IPs. They help to answer questions such as “What is overloading my control plane?” or “Which sequence of events led to this problematic situation?”. These questions are hard to answer otherwise—especially in large clusters. At Datadog, we have been running clusters with 1000+ nodes for more than a year and during that time, the audit logs have proved invaluable.
In this presentation, we will first introduce the audit logs, explain how they are configured, and review the type of data they store. Finally, we will describe in detail several scenarios where they have helped us to diagnose complex problems.

Migrating to a bazel based CI system: 6 learnings
Two years ago, we were given a big challenge - Transform Wix Build System, then based on Maven and Teamcity, to a new system that will support our exponentially growing scale.
But, how could we move to a system so different in so many ways than the existing one? Furthermore, we were required not to break the current build system, as we migrate to the new one.
Fast forward to today: Wix backend CI system is fully migrated to Bazel! The system builds in a fracture of the time - even with our largest codebases. In this talk, we will describe how we achieved this, why it took us so long, what tools we had to build on the way (and what we already have, and will, open source!), and share the principles that helped us.

Finally, we will talk about the new backup architecture in 4.2 and how it simplifies some of these concerns. This session is suitable for those with all levels of Ops Manager experience, but attendees should have a basic understanding of MongoDB’s replication process before attending this session.

Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices.
