Dispatches From The New Economy: The Five Faces Of The On-Demand Economy

From people determined to be their own boss, to those embracing the flexibility to do something they love, to workers finding a replacement for a traditional job – people working in the on-demand economy are just about as diverse as the labor market itself. A new report from Intuit Inc. and Emergent Research shows that there are a broad range of motivations – and differing levels of satisfaction – among five distinct groups of on-demand workers: The Business Builders – primarily driven by the desire to be their own boss. They represent 22 percent of on-demand workers. The Career Freelancers – happily building a career through independent work. They represent 20 percent of on-demand workers. The Side Giggers – looking to find financial stability by supplementing existing income. They represent 26 percent of on-demand workers. The Passionistas – looking for the flexibility to do something they love. They represent 18 percent of on-demand workers. The Substituters – replacing a traditional job that is no longer available. They represent 14 percent of on-demand workers. Methodology A total of 4,622 workers who find work opportunities via the platforms provided by the participating partner companies completed an online survey between September 11 and October 1, 2015. The results were weighted to reflect the proportion of workers in each of the following segments: Drivers/Delivery, Online Talent Marketplaces and Field Service/Onsite Talent. The weights were developed using earlier survey work that sized the on-demand economy. The largest weighted share of on-demand worker respondents from any single company is 16%, with most partner companies providing less than 10% of the respondents.

Often, when doing reverse engineering projects, one needs to import symbols from Open Source or "leaked" code bases into IDA databases. What everybody does is to compile to binary, diff and import the matches. However, it's often problematic due to compiler optimizations, flags used, etc... It can be even impossible because old source codes do not compile with newer compilers or, simply, because there is no full source, just partial source code. During the talk, I will discuss algorithms for importing symbols *directly* from C source codes into IDA databases and release a tool (that will run, most likely, on top of Diaphora) for doing so.

Presented at IDEAS Conference Dallas at the University of Texas in Dallas 2018. Subtitle: Practical and collaborative method to jump start into machine learning projects using open source with Jupyter Notebooks and Google Collab. Abstract: Not at all machine learning enthusiasts are alike, and, hence, setting up code environment or training the data model can many times be overwhelming for newcomers in the field of machine learning and deep learning. Data scientists may not have the necessary skills in setting up development environments, and, programmers, may not necessarily have the data scientists skills for preparing data sets and evaluating machine learning models. Furthermore, data scientists and programmers together in some enterprise may lack the collaboration platforms to work together on such projects. Even though most of the books on machine learning using some programming language X provide readers with instructions for setting up the coding environment, such chapters can derail the process of getting started if one gets stuck in the setup. Alternatively, collaborative platforms using Jupyter Ipython Notebooks and Google Collab provide a quick starter for programmers and data scientists alike to develop and collaborate on machine learning algorithms through open source without getting stuck with the nuances of setting up their environments or having to depend on commercial products. The talk revisits the value of Jupyter notebooks for newcomers to the field of AI by showcasing live examples and sharing sources of machine learning algorithms running online using Jupyter notebooks and providing a set of guidelines for implementing such technology in the workplace or leveraging existing ones in the market such as Google Collab. The talk is intended to encourage machine learning enthusiasts to enter the field through a practical method that minimizes the stress from the overwhelming material available on the Internet on how to get started with machine learning.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes.
