Grunge emerged in the mid-1980s in Washington, particularly Seattle, taking inspiration from hardcore punk, heavy metal, and indie rock. The genre became commercially successful in the early 1990s led by albums from Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Hip hop, also known as rap music, began in the 1970s in the Bronx and consists of rhythmic rapping over backing beats, often accompanied by graffiti art. The fashion of grunge musicians included worn jeans and long hair while hip hop artists wore oversized t-shirts and pants along with tennis shoes and caps.
