Belbin’s Team Roles compared to the MLP:FIM group.
Twilight Sparkle Main role ‘Co-ordinator’ “ Mature, confident, a good chairperson. Clarifies goals promotes decision-making, delegates well.” She also displays some of the typical negatives ‘manipulative’ or ‘off-loading’ particularly in her relations with Spike.
Rarity Main role ‘Completer Finisher’ “ Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors and omissions. Polishes and perfects.” She also has the negative aspects often seen in this role of ‘reluctance to delegate’ or ‘inclined to unduly worry’ particularly when it comes to aesthetic beauty.
Applejack Main role ‘Implementer’ “ Disciplined, reliable, conservative and efficient. Turns ideas into practical action.” She has at least one of the negative aspects often seen in this role of ‘inflexibility’ and at times she is seen to be ‘slow to respond to new possibilities’. This stubborn nature seems to cause her the most issues.
Pinkie-Pie Main role ‘Plant’ “ Creative, imaginative, unorthodox. Solves difficult problems.” She also reflects the negatives of this role by sometimes ‘ignoring incidentals’ and can at times be ‘too preoccupied to communicate effectively”. Pinkie-Pie regularly solves problems but often forgets to explain what she’s doing to the group.
Fluttershy Main role ‘Teamworker’ “ Co-operative, mild, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens, builds, averts friction.” Fluttershy can be ‘indecisive in crunch situations’ but has always come through when the team needed her most.
Rainbow Dash Main role ‘Shaper’ “ Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. Has the drive and courage to overcome obstacles.” Quick to temper, Rainbow Dash matches the expected negative traits as she’s ‘prone to provocation’ and can at times ‘offend ponies feelings’. NB: This slide is 20% cooler than all the others.
The remaining two roles Belbin describes are ‘Resource Investigator’ and ‘Specialist’. Spike is usually the ‘Resource Investigator’ – “extrovert, enthusiastic, communicative. Explores opportunities. Develops contacts.”  His absence from many of the adventures suggests that he has the expected weakness of ‘losing interest once initial enthusiasm has passed.’  The ‘Specialist’ role moves around the group as they utilise the specific knowledge or skills they each have.

Editor's Notes

  1. MLP: FIM is a perfect example of this. For those unfamiliar with the series the show focuses on the friendship of a group of six ponies - Twilight Sparkle (purple), Rarity (white), Fluttershy (yellow), Pinkie Pie (pink), Applejack (orange) and Rainbow Dash (blue). There are other characters featured in particular Twilight Sparkle’s companion a baby dragon called Spike. Residing in Ponyville the six are well respected and effective contributors to their local community.
  2. Each pony displays a mix of these roles depending upon the situation. Since time is limited I will look at what key role each pony plays in the group.
  3. Recognised as the lead of the group – provides the reason for the group and records how they develop. She’s also book smart providing the majority of the information that isn’t practical or creative.
  4. While each group is individual, it is recognised that it is possible to predict group behavior. Although never stated it is accepted that the group is equivalent to High School pupils so I’m going to use Bruce Tuckman’s model for a teenage group to examine the group development of MLP:FIM.
  5. Trust – When a cliff collapses sending Twilight Sparkle hurtling down the side Apple Jack manages to catch her. However, Twilight Sparkle’s trust in Applejack is tested when she tells Twilight Sparkle to let go and drop over the edge. Similarly the listening to each other and seeing each other as having strengths is demonstrated by Fluttershy who after the others just irritate the Manticrore manages to tame him.
  6. Most of the early adventures are about this phase as they fail to value each others skills and opinions. Pinkie-Pie regularly is disregarded as doing something odd but has often saved the day with her actions, Apple Jack’s refusal to work as part of a team and take advice or help from them caused her serious issues.
  7. The storming and norming phases of group development are inextricably linked, as it is often through the storming and challenging that acceptable group norms become set.
  8. The Dragonshy adventure is a good example of the team norming with each member using their strengths to try and deal with the problem and them working together to come up with a solution.
  9. Winter Wrap Up Day – saw all ponies working together to clear winter with Twilight Sparkle organising everyone while the others had key leadership roles that matched their strengths. Everyone had a role to play and was trusted to compete the task given.
