INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of the study is to find out the educational
leadership theories and models that are commonly discussed
and utilized in an academic institution. Theories are sets of
principles on which the practice of an activity is based. These
are concepts and ideas that explain something. Models
represent understanding the concept of ideas.
Educational leadership is a process that guides, evaluates,
and influences an individual to achieve a common goal.
Effective educational leadership shapes educators by
inspiring, motivating, affirming, challenging, and extending
their practice and pedagogy.
Theories and models of educational leadership explain
and represent ideas on how a certain individual
becomes a leader. They focus on the traits and
behaviors that people can apply to increase their
leadership abilities. They serve as the framework for
aspiring educators to reveal their leadership capabilities.
DISCUSSION:
Based on the critical review, there are nine
leadership theories in education. Each theory
defines the characteristics, capabilities,
approaches, and practices of a school
leader. (Santamaria, 2016)
In one of the articles of the Corporate Finance Institute
(2021), various leadership theories were emphasized.
(Harrison, C. 2017) The Great Man Theory focuses on the
innate or inborn personal characteristics of a leader. This
theory simply means that leaders are born. Contrastingly, the
trait theory shares the same idea with the Great theory as
leaders also possess personal characteristics but are not to
be born.
On the other hand, contingency theory focuses on
adaptive and contextual leadership. (Williams, J. (2018)
& Olden, (2016) In this theory, the leaders can adjust the
leadership style based on the situation of a certain
setting. Meanwhile, the situational leadership theory
gives emphasis on maturity-driven leadership. (Kenton,
2020) It considers the concept that the leader is prepared
and matured. Assessing and evaluating the capability of a
leader to handle a situation is determined in this theory.
The situational leadership theory can be also a
relationship-oriented leadership (Michell,
2020) because the leader should collaborate and
encourage socio-emotional and support to the
members. Another theory that was discussed in the CFI
article is the behavioral theory. The focus of this theory
is based on the expected behavior of a leader. The
effectiveness of leadership relies on how a leader act or
behaves to the followers.
The behavioral theory also highlights developmental
leadership because a leader can learn and grow by following
different stages to become a worthy leader.Another leadership
theory that was commonly discussed in the literature is the
transformational leadership theory. Transformational
leadership theory defines as innovative (Korejan & Shahbazi,
2016) and performance-based. (Mofareh & Alkrdem, 2020), It
gives emphasis to the concept that a leader creates new ideas
and new perceptions because this will help to grow in a new
path of development and success in the institution.
The transformational theory is used to come up with a
plan and outlook to achieve the goals. Leaders go out to
their comfort zone to explore new things, ideas and
knowledge and impart them to the institution. Similar to
transformational leadership is instructional leadership
wherein its idea is also innovative, (Boyce & Bowers
2018). The leader discovers the best practices and
strategies for the development of the academic
institution.
Other theories that were stated by Zakeer, et. al,2016
are style theory and transactional theory. The style
theory is anchored on the concept that skilled leadership
requires skills, knowledge, and abilities to become a
productive leader while the transactional theory of
leadership focuses on shared leadership or democratic
leadership. Decisions that were made are favorable in
the group regardless of the title or position of the
members as long as they are equipped with knowledge
and competencies regarding the task.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of the study is to find out the educational leadership theories and models that are commonly discussed and utilized in an academic institution. Theories are sets of principles on which the practice of an activity is based. These are concepts and ideas that explain something. Models represent understanding the concept of ideas.
  • 3. Educational leadership is a process that guides, evaluates, and influences an individual to achieve a common goal. Effective educational leadership shapes educators by inspiring, motivating, affirming, challenging, and extending their practice and pedagogy.
  • 4. Theories and models of educational leadership explain and represent ideas on how a certain individual becomes a leader. They focus on the traits and behaviors that people can apply to increase their leadership abilities. They serve as the framework for aspiring educators to reveal their leadership capabilities.
  • 5. DISCUSSION: Based on the critical review, there are nine leadership theories in education. Each theory defines the characteristics, capabilities, approaches, and practices of a school leader. (Santamaria, 2016)
  • 6. In one of the articles of the Corporate Finance Institute (2021), various leadership theories were emphasized. (Harrison, C. 2017) The Great Man Theory focuses on the innate or inborn personal characteristics of a leader. This theory simply means that leaders are born. Contrastingly, the trait theory shares the same idea with the Great theory as leaders also possess personal characteristics but are not to be born.
  • 7. On the other hand, contingency theory focuses on adaptive and contextual leadership. (Williams, J. (2018) & Olden, (2016) In this theory, the leaders can adjust the leadership style based on the situation of a certain setting. Meanwhile, the situational leadership theory gives emphasis on maturity-driven leadership. (Kenton, 2020) It considers the concept that the leader is prepared and matured. Assessing and evaluating the capability of a leader to handle a situation is determined in this theory.
  • 8. The situational leadership theory can be also a relationship-oriented leadership (Michell, 2020) because the leader should collaborate and encourage socio-emotional and support to the members. Another theory that was discussed in the CFI article is the behavioral theory. The focus of this theory is based on the expected behavior of a leader. The effectiveness of leadership relies on how a leader act or behaves to the followers.

The behavioral theory also highlights developmental leadership because a leader can learn and grow by following different stages to become a worthy leader.Another leadership theory that was commonly discussed in the literature is the transformational leadership theory. Transformational leadership theory defines as innovative (Korejan & Shahbazi, 2016) and performance-based. (Mofareh & Alkrdem, 2020), It gives emphasis to the concept that a leader creates new ideas and new perceptions because this will help to grow in a new path of development and success in the institution.
  • 10. The transformational theory is used to come up with a plan and outlook to achieve the goals. Leaders go out to their comfort zone to explore new things, ideas and knowledge and impart them to the institution. Similar to transformational leadership is instructional leadership wherein its idea is also innovative, (Boyce & Bowers 2018). The leader discovers the best practices and strategies for the development of the academic institution.
  • 11. Other theories that were stated by Zakeer, et. al,2016 are style theory and transactional theory. The style theory is anchored on the concept that skilled leadership requires skills, knowledge, and abilities to become a productive leader while the transactional theory of leadership focuses on shared leadership or democratic leadership. Decisions that were made are favorable in the group regardless of the title or position of the members as long as they are equipped with knowledge and competencies regarding the task.
