This document summarizes water, sanitation, and hygiene projects carried out in 3 villages - Pirpradangga, Kirttankhali, and Santoshpur in South West Bangladesh. It outlines issues around access to clean water and sanitation. Projects included constructing new ponds and repairing existing ones to provide water to over 150 families, as well as building 35 latrines and promoting hygiene awareness. Challenges included disputes over family selection for latrines and collecting contribution funds. The outcomes were improved access to safe water and sanitation, though sustainability remains an ongoing effort.
The document discusses several problems in the author's community and proposed solutions: 1) Environmental problems like littering cause bad odors, proposed solutions include placing more trash cans and cleaning up. 2) Many children work instead of going to school due to lack of family resources, solutions proposed include economic assistance and helping parents find jobs. 3) Water problems occur due to the mountain source and infrastructure issues, solutions center on repairing pipelines and performing maintenance. 4) Heavy rains can cause landslides on unstable land, proposed mitigations include road protections and increased monitoring during storms. 5) Air pollution from cigarette smoking bothers residents, solutions focus on reducing smoking and offering treatment programs.
This document outlines the goals and activities of the 1890 Land Grant Universities Water Center partnership. The partnership was established in 2010 with Virginia State University as the lead institution and included 10 other historically black land grant universities. The goals were to serve as a clearinghouse for water research, provide experiential learning for students, and address needs of local communities. Projects involved water quality research, education, and outreach. Challenges included issues with funding distribution and grant management across institutions. Future plans include continuing collaboration and seeking additional funding.

This research proposal aims to assess the performance of the Association of Rural Cooperation in Africa (ACRA) in supplying safe and clean water in Njombe District, Tanzania. Despite government efforts, communities still lack access to clean water within 400 meters. The study will evaluate ACRA's targets for water supply, compare them to actual supply, and identify factors influencing performance. Data will be collected through interviews and observations from a sample of 92 households, local officials, and an ACRA representative in Ramadhan ward. Results will be analyzed using SPSS and presented with tables, charts and text to evaluate ACRA's work and make recommendations.
This design project proposes a package water treatment plant for Nabouwalu, Fiji. A group of 5 students will design the plant. Nabouwalu currently uses direct chlorination without proper sedimentation or filtration. The population is over 5,000 and currently experiences water disruptions during rain. The project aims to provide safe, clean drinking water through a cost-effective and compact design incorporating coagulation, flocculation, filtration and chlorination. Literature on wastewater treatment plants, water leakage prevention, and water issues in Pacific islands will be reviewed. The expected result is a water treatment design that meets standards with a smaller footprint than conventional designs.

The Samburu Project drilled and equipped a shallow well at Sereolipi Primary School in Northern Kenya thanks to a donation from the Nimick Forbesway Foundation. This provides clean drinking water for the school's 750 students and staff, as well as community members. Students no longer have to search long distances for water and can focus on their studies instead of fetching water. The well also allows for improved sanitation, cooking, washing, farming, and decreased water-borne illness. The Samburu Project plans future projects like school gardening at Sereolipi to provide nutrition and teach sustainable farming.
The document summarizes a water project in Zomba District, Malawi led by Rotary clubs, Emmanuel International, and local partners. The project aims to provide access to clean water for over 100,000 people through activities like drilling new boreholes and wells, rehabilitating non-functioning water points, and training communities in management. To date, the project has rehabilitated 90 boreholes, dug 51 new shallow wells, drilled 10 new boreholes, and trained 151 communities, providing clean water to 105,000 people in the region. International Rotary clubs have also organized volunteer teams to assist with the water project and school rehabilitation work.

Managnese mining in West Timor: Impacts and response opportunitiesI Wayan Mudita
The document summarizes research on artisanal manganese mining in West Timor and its impacts. It finds that while mining provides income opportunities, it can also cause environmental degradation through erosion and sedimentation. Mining activities have led to social issues like conflicts between miners and land owners as well as safety concerns. A case study of the Tilong Dam area shows mining pits cause erosion of over 126 tonnes/ha on average and have improved livelihoods but also caused land conflicts. Stakeholders expressed concerns about food insecurity, child labor, health and safety issues, and environmental degradation from mining. Workshops discussed formalizing mining, improving practices, and requiring rehabilitation.
This document summarizes efforts to install solar-powered water wells in Tanzania to provide clean drinking water. It describes the background of Tanzania including demographics, typical water sources like holes in the ground shared with animals, and health risks. It then outlines the 8 step process for installing the solar wells including drilling, installing pipes and the solar array, and connecting it to a water pump and tank. Photos show the local environment and people grateful to have access to the clean water from the new wells. The goal for 2014 is to install 5 new wells at a cost of $85,500 total to provide clean water for more communities.

Keynote 1 - Successful tools to support adaptationNAP Events
This document discusses building successful tools to support climate change adaptation. It notes that while tools providing climate information and guidance can help with adaptation, they are not enough on their own. It emphasizes that for tools to be useful, they must incorporate consultation with users during design, and undergo evaluation of how users interact with the tools. Barriers to adaptation go beyond just lack of information, and include lack of leadership, influence of vested interests, and lack of community support. Sometimes extreme events can drive adaptation, but outcomes are not always successful, so careful evaluation of adaptation measures is important.
