4. Project Background
• 1.2 million people in the Rift Valley region
around Nakuru lack access to safe, sufficient
water during the dry season
• Ground water is very high in fluoride so shallow
wells are not an option
• The communities being served are very poor
and live in the rural areas outside of Nakuru
where there is no access to a municipal water
supply
6. Lack of Safe Water
This lack of safe water has profound
implications for the community:
Disease & Sickness
Unsafe Water
&
Poor Sanitation
Poor School Attendance
Child Mortality
Gender Inequality
Poverty & Hunger
7. Project History
• Since 2001 Canadians have been working
with the Rotary Club of Nakuru to provide
funding for close to 5000 rainwater
harvesting tanks bringing a lifetime supply of
safe water to more than 30,000 people
• In 2010, the Rotary Club of Toronto Eglinton
became the lead international Rotary Club
with plans to build 500 tanks per year from
2011-2013
10. Hand-up NOT a Handout
Tank recipients have been required to:
• Make a contribution of approximately $60
• Have a functioning latrine & hand-washing
station
• Plant 100 trees
• Provide Labour for construction of tanks,
eaves troughs and drainpipes
