- Medicare implemented a coverage policy for carotid arterial stents (CAS) in 2005 that required hospitals to meet quality standards before receiving reimbursement. - This policy may have inadvertently reduced access to CAS for disadvantaged Medicare groups by limiting hospital adoption. - The study found that fewer hospitals adopted CAS during 2005-2007 than expected based on their use of other cardiovascular technologies, but lower adoption rates did not reduce access for disadvantaged groups. Academic centers and high-volume hospitals were the main adopters of CAS.
